I heard this story first in 2007 listening to Bert on Dr Drew’s late night radio show. It hasn’t changed over the years.
The movie Van Wilder, which jumpstarted Ryan Reynolds career, was based on Bert’s life at college. Rolling Stone was researching an article about college partying in the 90s, ended up at FSU, found Bert, and wrote the whole piece about him. That was how his career began.

Bert “no shirt” Kreischer is hilarious! He’s actually known for not wearing a shirt. But just like you guys saw, you can actually forget about the fact that he’s missing his shirt! 🤣 The story is true and he actually just finished making a movie about being “the machine”, which I really want to see! But given the events of the world, it’s not the best time to promoting a movie involving Russia. But hopefully he’ll still be able to release it soon enough! You should check out clips of his podcast 2 bears 1 cave with his buddy Tom Segura, who is an even more hilarious comedian! Tom Segura is for sure someone you have to check out! 🤣🤣

So, my wife studied Russian and Slavic Studies at Baylor University and spent 3 semesters in Russian about 10 years after Bert was there. She 100% believes this story. When Bert was there, it was less than a decade after the fall of the Soviet Union and the Bratva (Russian Mob) ran everything. Schools even taking trips over there was rare and when they did take students, they absolutely paid protection money to the Mob. Also, the Militzia (Police) were corrupt as hell because they barely ever got paid. The Russian government was a mess at the time.
When she was there 10 years later, it wasn't nearly as bad but remnants of it remained. The Bratva wasn't as brazen about shaking down students, but if you weren't careful the Police still would. My wife spoke English as rarely as possible. She didn't want them assuming she had money because she was American. Her family really didn't. She was on scholarship. She told me, if he really did make the effort to make friends with their Banditi than the rest of the story is entirely plausible because that's really how the Russian Mob acted at the time.

What makes all of this even wilder than everything everyone has already posted, the movie Van Wilder was based on the Rolling Stones article written about Burt. Ryan Reynolds played Burt Kreischer.

4:28 For the most part, mobs don’t harm innocents. If you don’t mess with them, then they won’t mess with you. My mom had/still has some connections with some higher ranking members. She worked at one of the hotels that they own. She told me the story about how she accidentally found some big tanks of lye, which is how it all started for her 😅
So I was raised to respect the mob. Just don’t bother them and you’ll be fine.

It's crazy it is 100% true. It's even crazier than the stand-up actually bc he does go party with the cops in Moscow but he said on an early episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast, that the cops were crazier than the Mafia. They had him drive the cop car in the streets (probably very drunk). He said he had to actually sneak away from them bc they were worse. Everyone from classmates and teachers have verified his story. He actually just turned this into a movie. Cool fact: the movie "Van Wilder" with Ryan Reynolds is actually based on Bert's life in college at Florida State. It's nuts to imagine.
