People don’t realize how this was iconic. Brandy was a black young woman who is brown skin with braids. Being called ugly but omg she’s beautiful and made every girl who look like her feel beautiful
I love how as a little girl watching this I never questioned the fact that all the actors are different races playing a diverse family, as a kid you really don't care you just go along with it.
I questioned it (I was 7) 26 years ago lol, but my older sister (8 1/2) shut me down and tried to gaslight me about their son LOL. All while I was playing Mario Kart 64 on the TV, but constantly stealing a glance because I loved Brandy and Whoopi! 😂 Miss that time!
Honestly no one even commented on her race back then. I was a kid and we just saw it as Brandy and Whitney in a Disney movie and we loved it 🥰. People don't seem to remember how diverse television was in the 90's so nothing about this looked out of the ordinary.
Social media didn’t exist back then. If it did, there probably woulda been some angry ignorant parents on there making complaints about their children being exposed to that
Just to add another perspective. As a white little girl (I was 9) when this movie came out...I was SO excited b/c finally real people were playing the roles of the animated movies. I never once thought about the color of the cast skin.
I was like 8 or 9 when this movie came out and I wanted to be like Brandy and Whitney Houston. I was so in love with life after I saw this movie for the first time. Years later, I saved up all my Disney reward points so I could get this DVD out of the vault. It is still so inspirational.
I still remember rushing home. Getting homework done before 8 to sit and watch Brandy as Cinderella. Lawd I love this movie and when I found it was on Disney plus I revisit the movie
I remember watching this Masterpiece with my nephew, and we would dance to "A Lovely Night, A Lovely Night, A Finer Night You Know You'll Never See"...this movie is EPIC on every level.
This is movie is my favorite childhood movie from the 90s when I was 2 I remembered my mom and dad and i was 2 and my brother was 12 and my sister was 8 we were watching this movie on ABC in the living room back in 1997 and my mom knows i am obsessed with this movie She knows Cinderella is my favorite Disney Princess and i love Blue
Honestly as a kid, this was my Cinderella. Sure I had seen the Disney film, but I was a theatre kid, I loved movie musicals, so this was it. Whitney Houston was my FGM, Brandy was my Cinderella, Paulo was my Prince, Whoopi and Victor were my King and Queen, that's just the way it is. And it just kinda makes me laugh when in the 2020s people talk about being pioneers in representation when movies and shows like this were doing it, and doing it so well, back into the 80s and 90s
omg i loved this movie as a kid !!!! remember i had it on vhs lol , but for real this movie is amazing & iconic & im so grateful they made it & it’s being appreciated still now
no lie, this movie made me believe I could find love. Growing up as a bi-racial child of two minorities, I caught on that in movies whites got with whites, blacks with blacks, exc. I hadn't met anyone who was also mixed like I was, so I figured I would just be alone for the rest of my live. Then I watched this movie, I remember very clearly being a kid and seeing not just the king and queen being a mixed couple but also Cinderella and the prince!! It was that moment on the carpeted floor of my grandma's house I first believed that it was possible to just find someone who I could share love with, regardless of ethnicity
Honestly, as a foreigner to me that's what America supposed to be. A beautiful mix. Don't erase/lose your culture or roots, but mix it up. They've fought very hard to maintain an "order of things", like they're still in old Europe.
The way this movie changed how we viewed race at the time; a black girl was the stepdaughter of a white woman who 1 of her daughters was black girl and, and a Asian prince was the son of a black woman and white man, we didnt even acknowledge the biology of it it was just that good of a production and brought us together
This made me teary eyed🥹 I never really understood how dope and important the representation was for me as a black girl at the time. Keep resting Whitney. 😢❤🙏🏽
I just watched it the other week with my mom. It was fantastic. Everything was on point and and it really gave happiness. We didn't remember the movie at all.
This movie was my first example of color blind casting, and it...was...WONDERFUL!! It IS truly magical and holds up. And as a kid nothing was askew...now later on I did wonder how did a White King and a Black Queen make an Asian Prince...but it didn't matter.
I watched this when I was six and instantly fell in love. Loved it more than Disney's animated version. Maybe it was Rogers + Hammerstein's music. Maybe it was Brandy + Whitney's voices. Either way, it blew me away and sparked a love for musical theater.
So glad they invited Rob Iscove in the reunion. He is one of the magicians who worked behind the camera 🎥 now please share the video on TH-cam or Netflix for your fans outside US
I wouldn’t say, this is the only « Cinderella » that matter but it DEFINITELY matter that each one of us can see ourselves in various media. We have to see things through the eyes of others so we can connect as human beings and feel included not secluded. As a French person, I grew up in the late 80s, early 90s with the original Cinderella story from Charles Perrault, then the Disney Cinderella of course and it’s so important that kids see all versions including this one. So they can see themselves and their friends in it. No matter how you look in the outside, inside as kids we were absorbing things emotionally. Kids are little princes and princesses who need to feel inspire so I salute this movie with the magnificent Whitney Houston (rip) and the talented Brandy. Too bad Whitney couldn’t be a part of the 25 year anniversary. 🖤
I love this musical! Whitney was definitely a visionary, while in 2022 people are still debating whether The Little Mermaid should be black or not she was throwing us, in the 90s, black Cinderella AND asian prince charming without much regard for middle/white america.
Hear me out: as a black man, I understand the Ariel controversy. I don't condone any of the racism against Halle, but there are countless adaptations at this point where redheaded white characters are always casted by black actors. It'd be one thing to diversify the cast, it's another thing where you rarely see a character who's originally a white redhead played a white redhead actor. Screw Riverdale and Fate the Winx Saga but thank the casting directors for casting actual redheads to play Cheryl Blossom and Bloom I personally never liked the idea of changing a character's race, gender or sexuality. There are some exceptions I would accept on "changing" a character's race, gender or sexuality. 1. The characters' creators give the writers permission. 2. Create alternate versions of the characters. Like doppelgangers from other dimensions. Or clones raised in different societies. 3. Create your own version of the character with a different name. 4. The characters' race or sexual orientation was never made clear even by the creators If these exceptions were made, I'd be tolerant to Ariel being black. But even if Clements and Musker gave their approval, I'm still not excited. It's likely just gonna be another shot for shot remake that probably won't do anything different and even if it did, would miss the point of the original. That said, I'm excited for the Percy Jackson TV show. Especially after those dumpster fire movies. This time, they have the original author's hands on deck, with every decision decided by him. Which is why I'm okay with making Annabeth Black. If the original creator is okay with it, I'm okay with it.

The only movie I never get tired of playing weekly when I was a child ❤❤ Until now I can sing the duet of Cinderella and the Prince when they first met 🍎🤭🤭
What an amazing movie. I remember this coming on TV made for television on Sunday night. I miss the 90s so much. When Whitney Houston does such an amazing job and she was gone too soon. Rest in peace Whitney Houston!! 😢 💜 💜 💜 Race does not matter one thing I love about this movie Cinderella is everyone was different in their own way. But we’re all the same on the inside!!
I think this was a much better adaptation than the classic 1950 animated film.
