Dang man, this was a great tutorial. I've unfortunately given up on this instrument. but it's still really nice seeing a great teacher like you. It restores your faith in humanity a little, ya know?
I had a stroke a year ago, and I am incorporating the jaw harp as part of my recovery. There are a lot of speaking skills that I relearning while learning a party skill.
Thanks for the tutorial. I've owned one for decades without giving it a go, but my grandson just pulled it out. I could not answer his questions. now you've inspired not just me to learn but my wife as well. She's the one who gave it to me.
Extremely helpful! The closeups of teeth positioning solved my problem and saved my teeth from damage. The rest of the tips about glottis, tongue, breathing will take some time to digest and practice. One at a time. Right now I am trying to instinctively find the right way to hold this in my teeth. This is an excellent demo with clear instructions, closeups, great visuals and clear audio. You are the best! Thank you!!
MY FRIEND. YESTERDAY MY JAW HARP ARRIVED AND I WAS ONLY ABLE TO MAKE A SOUND AFTER WATCHING YOUR VIDEO. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN THE DISCOVERY OF THIS NEW INSTRUMENT. Dude thank you so much! I JUST got mine and I was watching your video as I played mine and tried the things you taught me along the way. So fun! Thank you so much! You’re a VERY good teacher.
Wow, where do I even begin to thank you all for the jaw harp tricks? I have to admit, I'm loving the way I play it! Just saying "how are you?" through the harp is probably the easiest thing ever. I'll be hunting for words that you can kinda-sorta pronounce while playing for that extra cool effect. I haven't even tried the epiglottis trick, and I don't have an Adam's Apple either - but hey, I'm still having a blast! Another cool thing is, when you play and look at the TV, the whole screen seems to ripple like you're peering through an aquarium with dancing waters. That's a whole lot of fun - thank you! Your inspiration is seriously contagious. I hadn't touched my jaw harp in years, but after listening to some videos my daughter sent me, I just had to dive right back in - and now I'm treating myself to a sweet new MUARO "Lighthouse" Harp by Glazyrin. The Russian Theodor Bastard (yep, that's his real name) has a beautiful one, and there's something so spiritual about creating sounds with a jaw harp. It really messes with the brain in the best way possible. Listening to music is one thing, but actually making it? It's a whole different ball game! Lastly, whoever inspired you planted an amazing seed - the curiosity, the drive to learn, and not just that, but also to teach and share the gift that's been passed on to you. Keep on rockin'!
I recently ordered a nice jaws harp from Ukraine. I've never played before. While waiting, decided to study up a bit, and found this AWESOME video. Thanks very much. P.S. I did buy that Udemy course, too. It's a great deal.
This is the best video on jaw harp I've seen. It goes in depth and explores more techniques than I learned about after watching many "advanced" videos by other people. It's also organised very well. And most importantly, you talked about safety in the first part, which I feel is neglected by everyone else. All that in 20 minutes. Amazing. Seeing that you have other instruments on your wall and your channel is called "Sound Adventurer", I feel this is the perfect channel for me. Let's see your other videos...
@@SoundAdventurer 1 month later and I found myself going back to this video to see if there are any techniques I forgot about. Turns out I haven't tried using my diaphragm yet (at least consciously). OTOH I have developed some techniques of my own and it's really amazing how much you can do with such a simple instrument. Also, it's not as dangerous to one's teeth as I thought initially, but I still think it's better to be safe than sorry. I've watched your other videos in the meantime and I must say they were very inspiring. Please keep exploring more instruments. I have the notification bell enabled so that I won't miss anything. Revisiting old instruments might be interesting too.
@tues Thank you so much, that is so kind of you. It's so true! such a simple instrument that I thought I could figure out in just a short period of time--turns out there's a lot more to it than I thought. I'm caught up in other projects right now but I do have some plans and experiments to try. Hope to see you around. :)
Duuuuuude this is so cool! Thank you very much putting in all this effort! So many examples, and you play so well! What a good teacher. I'll take your advice and hold it dear during my practice!
I had one at my house for like years and I've never understand how it was supposed to be used until I saw a music video with this instrument. So I came to watch your video to try it too! At first I didn't know how to put my mouths onto it. But I tried several times differents ways and finally I succeed! ( only to make a song for the moment it is cool haha). Now I'm trying to use my tongue to make variations but it's kinda hard. I guess practice is the only answer! Thank you for your video, you make things really clear!
This tutorial was great, i bought one to annoy people in vr and had no idea what i was doing 17:03 i love ur left eye closing as you focus haaha Edit- omg you acknowledged it at 18:50 lol
Dude where were you when I had my own jaw harp when I was a kid! I never understood how that thing was to be played so it just became something I fiddled with and now I don't remember what I did with that thing but maybe one day I'll pick this thing up to actually play around with properly xD
Fantastic info, and the up-close-and-personal was actually quite helpful. Thank you for taking the time! I've been wanting to tackle this little thing for ages and found your instructions to be easy to follow and remember. ^_^
Great lesson, thank you for sharing. I just got my first jaw harp and it sounds more opaque, I would like to know which one are you using on this video, I like the sound. I am interesting to learn how to play jaw harp.
The Pavel Potkin. I really enjoy this harp-- in fact I talk more about it in my video here: th-cam.com/video/X510qsD17Ek/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much, by the way! Good luck on your journey! It's such a fun instrument.
Pretty amazing dude! Thank you for the video. Going to get one. I playa few instruments so hopefully I can figure this one out. Nice equipment on that wall in the background!!!!!
Hi there. I stumbled across a video demonstrating jaw harps and became intrigued. I found your videos and I wanted to complement you regarding your instruction. I am going through your jaw harp vids, and also learned about your 12 month project of different instruments. What a great idea! Very inspiring. Thank you for the content. I have a harp on the way soon, and really look forward to learning how to play. I have also been tinkering with the harmonica and will check out the course you suggested. Tin whistle? That looks great too! Cheers.

It's funny how you took ur main harp - i am actually learning on the same model 😀 Edit. So the greatest part I found that really gives the sound diverse character is transitioning between mouth and lips smoothly - thanks

How exactly do you change pitch or notes while playing the jaw harp? I’m also having a little trouble getting a fuller sound and having it sound louder
Hi Jakob! Thanks for your comment.
A couple things you can try:
While playing the jaw harp, you can't really change the fundamental pitch while playing, you can only change the harmonics. I talk about how to do this in my other video, here: th-cam.com/video/jwI20Ei76wM/w-d-xo.html
Second: As far as getting a fuller sound, it really depends on a few things
1. Are you forming a proper seal around the inner frame of the jaw harp with your lips? If you have any gaps that can impact your sound fullness resulting in not as full of a sound
2. Is your mouth too far open? Experimenting with your mouth shape can really impact how much sound projects.
3. Are you using your breath and diaphragm to push and pull in the air? Your diaphragm provides most of the volume with the jaw harp with proper timing
4. Perhaps you have the snoopy harp or the grover harp. I noticed that these harps it's MUCH harder to get good volume. The gaps in these harps are far too wide resulting in a thin sound.
