How to bypass an MDM lock on a Pre-T2 Mac!

  • Made a typo! To check your MDM status, type "profiles status -type enrollment" without the quotes! I missed the hyphen in the video.
Figured I might as well post a video about this, mainly because I had to do this anyways for my sister so she could use the darn thing, haha!
Hopefully this video is helpful to you all!
All music in this video was made by me! I'll release it later when the album is ready.
Putting the terminal commands/hosts file entries here in case y'all want to copy-paste:
    cd System
    cd Library
    cd ../../etc
    sudo nano hosts
    Hosts file entries:
    0.0.0.0 iprofiles.apple.com
    0.0.0.0 mdmenrollment.apple.com
    0.0.0.0 deviceenrollment.apple.com
    0.0.0.0 gdmf.apple.com
To check if your MDM enrollment status is active, type:
    profiles status type enrollment

Thank you! For everyone not seeing the option to not connect the Mac to the internet in the macOS setup, you need to erase Macintosh HD and reinstall macOS. You may accidentally connected it to the internet at some point, so make sure internet is disabled.

    Thank you sooo much!
Just did this today on an A1706 Mac book pro that had an MDM.
    Some tips for others:
Had an old boot-usb drive with Mac Big Sur.
Deleted the drive in recovery mode but accidentally logged in my WiFi. And couldn’t get it to remove so I opened the laptop and unhooked the 3 WiFi pins.
Restarted and internet was for sure off now!
I went back into recovery mode (command +r) and it wouldn’t let me install fresh.
So I had an idea, boot with the bootable usb-big sur OS. Reboot the computer and hold “option” until you can boot from the usb to install a fresh copy.
I followed everything else to the as close as possible!
I did notice “cd System” command didn’t work.
    I just did cd
    Then the other directories
    The “..etc” didn’t work either
When I got to “sudo” part it was blank and I put in the other stuff.
Checked the status and that went well!
    Thanks again!

I feel like you kind of breezed thru a couple of things... or I just didn't get what you were doing/saying.
When you said that we should cut and paste the command codes you have listed, it looked like when you did in on screen you got some sort of response afterwards. I entered the lines (cut/paste) and... nothing. I hit ENTER.... nothing. I went to close the dialog box and I get a message that stated "Closing this window will terminate the running processes: pico, sudo". so, does that mean the inputted lines will be deleted?
I guess I'm unclear on if I should I have got a response and how do I exit out of running process???

    • @MattsTech

The process should give you a response, if it locks up when typing the command, then it’s waiting for a response from you, which is not what you want. I’d check for misspellings. :)

This will not work with T1 Macbooks meaning 2016 and 2017 Macbook Pros both 13 and 15 inch. Reason being that you will be prompted to connect to the internet to install a critical update. I did this method in this video on a 2015 Macbook Air after finding it mentioned on Stack Exchange. I just left WiFi disconnected. 2018 and on are T2 up until M1 silicon Macs in 2020 and you will definitely not be able to get around MDM in any way at all. Hence your video title is wrong. Like I said, it worked perfectly fine on one of my friend's T2 Macs. He had a 2019 MacBook Pro, and not only did they bypass the lock, it did not require an internet connection in the installer. Now obviously every computer is different, so it may not work for you, and if such is true, then I'm sorry it didn't work, but speaking from experience, I have seen this work with a T2 MacBook Pro.
I wrote the title as "Pre-T2" because I wasn't sure if a T2 Mac would work, and it seems to work unreliably. However, I've seen multiple guides that state that this will work with both T1 and T2, and I've seen one T2 Mac work with this bypass, so...unsure what to tell ya, you might need to adapt my instructions to work with your machine. If I get a T2 Mac that's MDM locked, I will release a follow-up video. :)

You might not have grabbed the right installer, some smaller ones require an internet connection. Make sure you grabbed the full installer, they should be on Apple's website.

Pre-T2 Macs are from 2017 and earlier (including the 2019 iMac). No Mac that is currently supported right now with macOS Sonoma, excluding the 2019 iMac, is a Pre-T2 model.

All of the remote management locks are based on the machine serial number and nothing else.
The machine serial number is stored in the Apple database, which is why the machine "phones home" to verify it.
There is some software called "Checkmat8" on post T2 macs, it is only a bypass not a removal therefore you can never upgrade your OSX afterwards.
Pre T2 macs work differently. I have tried your way and if definitely cannot work at all
