Incredibly simple video! But that is what makes it SOOOO good and so easy to follow. Such clear presentation in a logic step by step process. Thank you!
Omar, the fact you have only 70,000 subscribers is an absolute farce mate. You basically got me into photography and also to buy the xt30 and I'm a pretty guff photographer to be honest. But your videos keep me pushing and trying to achieve things I couldn't before and you do it with style man. So, I salute and than k you for your efforts. Top, top man!
Fuji should hire you! First, I was planning to buy for canon m5 and looking for reviews on m5 but I bump to your videos, It changed my mind and bought X-T20 instead a week ago and I'm loving it so far! (Canon DSLR user here)
This is great Omar, I've had my T20 about 3 weeks and have been puzzling over the focus modes. The manual was not much help, nor were the Fuji videos and other videos I saw. Yours is just so clear. Having watched it several times it's slowly sinking into my head so tomorrow I'll play around and hope I've got it.
Nice, but I think it needs a follow-up covering phase-detect AF vs contrast-detect AF. The big squares and the small squares, and the change in Wide/Tracking when you combine AF-C with CH (switches from CDAF to PDAF). Also, AF-S focuses with the lens wide-open, but AF-C focuses with the lens stopped down to the desired aperture, and if the f-number is too high for the PDAF sensors the camera uses CDAF instead. (A lens that focuses more slowly than that 18-55 will really show the difference.)
Thank you so much!!! I just purchased an XT20 after selling my Canon equipment and testing many cameras. As a typical Canon dinosaur, I did not feel to confident in using more sophisticated AF modes. This video really helps!!!!!
Oh man, last night had to reset my settings, and what a nightmare figuring out what to put back. Thanks to Omar, I tried changing something, but didn't quiet understand the function. However, I went ahead and made the change. I changed the "Preview Exp, white balance". That didn't work out for me, until I played your video again a few times and assigned it to a custom button. You can actually shut it off and turn it on, on the fly, by holding the assigned custom button down a second or two. That's so great to have that setting, particularly when shooting with off camera flash, and your stopping down, to suppress the ambient. Anyhow, thanks.
Getting nervous now that the X-30's inbound! Omar - help! Please, could you explain your focus setting choices for a) studio model photography where the model is more or less stationary (but maybe changing poses and expressions) & b) indoor breakdance photography. Thank you!
This is the most helpful presentation of the fugi AF system I've seen. How would you compare the fugi AF system to the Sony a7iii system in terms of ease of use and focus effectiveness? My initial thought, after seeing this video, is that the fugi system is less complex. Any thoughts? I'm an amateur and considering getting either an xt3 or a a7iii (or possibly a a7000 when it comes out). Any thoughts you might share would be helpful.
I have black version of x-t20 too. I like this camera so much! But I have some focusing problems with moving subjects. Do you have the same problem with your x-t20 focusing system? Thanks
Thank you so much! A great video, setting out all the modes very clearly. I have one question - what modes would you use to shoot small children running around?
I'd like to know this as well. My assumption is AF-C Single Point or Zone and Set 2 which is what I've been using. I also sometimes use face/eye detection. Maybe Omar can confirm but he also has a face detection tutorial that you can check out.
Thanks for the great videos, they are so informative. I was finding the X-T20 to be kinda small so I recently got the Fuji Hand Grip MHG-XT10 for my X-T20, it makes so much difference to the handling, plus it brings the tripod screw mount inline with the lens while still giving access to the battery and memory card, it is expensive though for what it is, but I think its worth it.
Great video, Omar ! And great channel overall, I like your cheeky personality and how much you're not taking yourself seriously whole delivering real and vast knowledge. It's always very didactic while being funny. I just upgraded myself from a X-T10 to a X-T20, partly thanks to all your tutos. (PS : Am I the only one who read Single AF at 6:48 differently than single auto-focus 😅 ?) (Especially when coupled with single shot )
I know it's an old video but I have just bought an X-T20 to go alongside my X-H2 and it's a great combination... great video, and yes, some of us do watch motorcycle racing 🙂
Hey Omar, great video series on xt20. I recently purchased it and it is AWESOME. I've question on autofocus. I'm having trouble focusing when taking self portraits. What I want is keep the camera on tripod, I stand in front of the camera, take focused pictures in burst mode. How do I acheive tha? Thanks.
Got my X-T20 three weeks ago and began addictively watching your videos. After some of your lessons I immediately put it to work on vacation in Australia and got fantastic photos. Can you please elaborate on the best modes and other settings that help in shooting action situations? I've heard criticism of the XT20 for its autofocus speed for action photography.
Hi Omar, excited to have just received an X-T20 here! Coming from a DSLR, I am surprised about the behavior of the selector buttons. Mine is set to Fn, but I think it would have been awesome if there was any way to toggle the behavior to focus as soon as the EVF is activated. It just makes more sense to me that I would want to adjust critical focus in such a moment than fiddle with settings. What do you think?
Thanks very much. Did you make a video on BBF? I would like to know if I can use BBF and AFC at the same time? Many thanks for all the tips and advice! Oneil
Hi Omar, enjoying the videos on the X-T20, thanks... I'm not sure if this is worth a separate segment but I was wondering about how some of the Fuji lenses balance on the X-T20 when hanging from the neckstrap (I'm mostly a looking-down-on-the-flip-screen shooter). Specifically I'm interested in the 16-50mm, and the 23mm f2... The 18-55mm looks rather nose heavy... (I gave up my Sony NEX-7 some years back because the excellent 24mm Zeiss lens just looked too big and felt too heavy). I am now thinking about switching to the X-T20 from an Olympus EM-1, will I miss those lightweight, small but still sharp M43 prime lenses? (The X-T20s must be selling like hotcakes here in Taiwan, no camera store seems to have a display model available for me to check) Cheers
Here I am, coming back with one of the most noobiest questions ever regarding autofocus. After hearing it's a more accurate way of shooting, I've started using the AF-L button for back button focusing in single mode, but I'm not sure where the focus is kept once I release the button. Even though I hear the beep, the square goes from green to white, and the AFL indicator with the green dot turns into AF-S. The fact that when using the screen to choose the focus point keeps the AFL indicator leads me to believe I should only press the shutter release only when I get the green light (or square, respectively). Could you please clear this basic thing out for me? So far getting a decent shot has been mostly a question of luck... Thank you so much!
If I have set back button focus and want to use continuous AF for a sequence of photos, do I have to keep the back button down along with the shutter to make the camera track the subject?
omar sir, i have a question. when shooting your son running, you use 1/1800 ss and f4.0 my question is can i get the same result using 1/125 ss, f1.2 and still get the same result?or my shutter speed is too low for movement and my f number is too risky to get blurry image?
Great work! Please continue on doing such videos i am a beginner and just got my x-t20 and using it is very easy with ur videos!!. I have a noob question, so if i am shooting 3 people next to each other, should i use AF-S in Single Point or Zone mode?
Have you noticed that the focus is not always right even it seems "locked" on the subject? I have experiencing this couple of time with single shot, S mode with the focus point changed to the smallest square. The focus seems right on LCD, but it was actually shifted to the background of the subject. It drives me crazy for I thought I got the shot until realizing it later. I have to keep shooting more than needed just in case. I am not a pro and only had used Sony DSLR before, so not sure if it is a common problem or only for Fuji. I remember seeing this problem on X-t10 and x20 before.
Kensi KA yes!!! That's why I focus with the back button. I was annoyed with the camera refocusing as I was about to shoot. Back button focus decouples the whole exposure and focus thinking. Good luck!!
I know this is quite old subject... any way what about inability of choosing focus point in Auto Mode, I am having this issue with xt30. Why would any one need a camera which wouldn't allow the user to chose what one take picture of???
"who goes to motorcycle races!?" 🤨 i do. its actually why i bought a camera in the first place. ha! made me laugh...a little. loving your tutorials mate. really has it all sink in and come together with plenty of "ahh huhhh!" moments. after hours of reading the manual more than a few times. cheers Omar. keep'm coming!
Can u do a video on Fuji xt20 AutoFocus for Video please. Im doing weddings. Seems like the camera is struggling with focusing for movements of 1 person while being in a big crowd.
Im using it on a steadycam stabilizer to glide and trying to focus just 1 person dancing in the crowd. However the camera is struggling with its focusing and detecting too many faces and keeps on getting out of focus..
Hi Omar, which is good camera for the best image quality? Fujifilm XT20, Fujifilm X-E3, or Sony RX1R II? I am looking for image quality of the camera and I am not looking for the features. Can I use raw converter in every cameras? Or only Fujifilm needs raw converter for better quality images. So I am stuck with a camera selection. Currently I am using Sony RX100 ll and I am looking for a good update. Need your help to sort out my problem...
Hi, Omar!I love your work and thank you for all the help you have been giving me.Can you tell me, please, which modes would you use for street/travel photography?Thank you.MelHugs from Portugal
Mel Lourenço sure. I shoot single shot on S focus. I set the camera to aperture priority mode so the camera picks a shutter speed. ISO a little high to keep the shutter speed high.
Hi Omar, which mode you think is the best for tracking kids (i have two kids). I have been trying different combination, but it does seems I can track the subjects very well.....
It depends how fast your kids are. lol....first make sure your shutter speed is high enough. Doesn't matter the mode if they can outrun your shutter speed...so 1/500th for your fast kids. Then try continuous on case 2 or 5. Let us know!!
I got a question when im in AF-C mode CL i have the camera set to 5 ps im getting no where 5 frames per second it feels more like 2 frames per second why is that ?
hi Omar, thank you for al the videos that you're doing, these helps us a lot. i just purchased a fuji xt20 ( xf 18-55mm F2.8-4 ), but i do have one concern, my camera won't switch to manual focusing, even if i turn the selector on S, C, or M, it does nothing, even "MF" doesn't appear on the screen. i dont understand what's wrong ... what should i do ? thank you a lot for your help
i did check this, i putted the lens on manual so i can control the aperture myself ( through the aperture ring, this works pretty fine ), and once again, i turn the selector on M and it does nothing, i can't control the focusing manually ( MF doesn't appear on the screen ). i do not understand what's wrong
Hi Omar.. I always love your videos. NICE!!! haha btw I'm going to ask you about something that makes me confuse. Do you have that experience? In the beginning of this video I think you feel that kind of experience. That is about your LCD that have a brighter area in bottom-right part of the LCD (at 1:47). Have you? I've that experience too. Can you explain it? It can be seen when you take some pictures in the dark room.
Omar! First i like to thank you for the excellent videos you are putting up here! They really help a lot. And maybe you can help me with a problem: lately i went on a mountain and shot some pictures of the landscape. Aperture around 8 and shutter times high enough. I focused via back button. Nearly 1/3 of the shots are totally out of focus. I use the kit lens 18-55mm. Have you experienced something similar? Thanks!
I can only guess a few things. One might be your rear button may not actually be set to focus. Test that. Next, the small AF switch on the kit lens may have turned off accidentally (this happened to me once). Third, make sure your focus point is set to what you want to focus. Forth, you're drunk. 🍹🍹
hi Omar, great video:) i have a question haha which mode would you recommend for shooting group photos ? should i turn on face recognition? or simply choose one AF mode? thanks!!
seval akyol I have not. First make sure your images are shot in RAW. A bw jpeg will forever be bw. Next, if your image is raw, try to "reset" the image. Perhaps the image is importing with a bw preset. Other than that I'm out of ideas lol
Hey Omar what mode should I be if I were to be taking portraits or candids were people are having small movements? I tried continuous zone tracking mode and continuous single point but they still come out blurry. Thank you for your help!
Amelia Song make sure your shutter speed is fast enough for moving people. You probably want to be over 1/200th to be sure. Stick to single focus point but increase the size. Good luck.
I used to have AF mode menu on my xt-20. Now AF mode menu is blacked out. I can't click on it to change autofocus. What could beh the problem? Camera firmware is up to date.
Hi Mr. OMAR can i ask u something... i just bought my XT20 but without lens... just the body.. and when i opened ders no picture to see .. i just saw blurred.. So do i nees to buy lens to work my cam?
Incredibly simple video! But that is what makes it SOOOO good and so easy to follow. Such clear presentation in a logic step by step process. Thank you!
i think this is the most comprehensive tutorial video about X-T20 AF out there. great video, Omar!
Omar, the fact you have only 70,000 subscribers is an absolute farce mate. You basically got me into photography and also to buy the xt30 and I'm a pretty guff photographer to be honest. Your X-T20 videos are awesome. Thanks for making all of these!

I've got the XT2 but this was the best explanation of how to set autofocus for my camera. Many thanks
Just bought X-T20 and all your videos help me a lot !! Thank you :)

Watching this again in 2019 to assist with my X-T3. Great video!
Thanks for the great tutorials! I got my X-T20 yesterday and was falling asleep reading the manual. This is so much better;)
haha...I hear you.
Thank you for this tutorial! You made all these modes make sense!!
Omar, Thanks for your detailed video, better than any paper or pdf manual. My new xt-20 is only 2 days old & raring to go!!
Getting nervous now that the X-30's inbound! Omar - help! Please, could you explain your focus setting choices for a) studio model photography where the model is more or less stationary (but maybe changing poses and expressions) & b) indoor breakdance photography. Thank you!
You are the reason i got a xt20 and i love it
How is fuji not sponsoring you
Bless you. My A6300 may be returned... I wanted the X-T20 but went with A6300 as I, nor salesman, explained this well for the Fuji.

In C mode do you have to keep your finger half pressed on the shutter button for the camera to constantly focus? Thanks.
Thank you so much for your videos, I learn a lot since I purchased a X-T20 recently.
thank you for sharing for your thought. I have a question that is this camera good for landscape photography ?
Omar, just got a x-t20...this is a super helpful video! Thankyou!

Is it possible to see the grid and choose focus through the viewfinder (similar to how it works with the xpro2) ?
I know it's an old video but I have just bought an X-T20 to go alongside my X-H2 and it's a great combination... great video, and yes, some of us do watch motorcycle racing 🙂

Hello Omar, I just need to ask doubt regarding camera. I have a plan to buy XT20, Fujifilm x-e3
Thankyou for ur tutorial, do u have any recommend focus for face and makeup?
this helps alot for someone like me that owns xt20! kudos papi
Hi Omar, excited to have just received an X-T20 here! Coming from a DSLR, I am surprised about the behavior of the selector buttons. Sir, have you done vidoe on face and eye detection focus? ... Btw, why do they have so many confusing options!??
Thanks very much. Did you make a video on BBF? I would like to know if I can use BBF and AFC at the same time?
Many thanks for all the tips and advice!
Oneil
You only need to use AF-C with BBF. Pressing and realising the focus button works just as AF-S does then, and hold for moving subject :)
Hi there. Master! What mode should i use for group shots. Thanks
(I gave up my Sony NEX-7 some years back because the excellent 24mm Zeiss lens just looked too big and felt too heavy). thanks!
If I have set back button focus and want to use continuous AF for a sequence of photos, do I have to keep the back button down along with the shutter to make the camera track the subject?
Could You please make a similar tutorial on focusing with X-T3? Please!
omar sir, i have a question. when shooting your son running, you use 1/1800 ss and f4.0 my question is can i get the same result using 1/125 ss, f1.2 and still get the same result?or my shutter speed is too low for movement and my f number is too risky to get blurry image?
What type of focus settings should I use for portrait photography?
Great 👍 video! Please also cover the portrait option in the auto mode! Super frustrating what the camera does when it cannot find a face to track!!
When you using AF-C, do you set your Shutter AF, AF-C to off or on?
Hi, I bought a xt20 with xc 14-45 lens which I am not satisfied with the sharpness. If I can get a XF lens which one do you recommend?
Superb video. It answered all my questions..you covered all the points related to focussing...thank you
Big thanks Omar, you did a GREAT job and help me a lot. Thank you again. I'm come from Hong Kong, your new fans. :)
Great work! Please continue on doing such videos i am a beginner and just got my x-t20 and using it is very easy with ur videos!!. I have a noob question, so if i am shooting 3 people next to each other, should i use AF-S in Single Point or Zone mode?
Love the channel Omar, your videos are making it very tempting to pull the trigger on a XT-20...
DO IT, DO IT (little devil on your shoulder). :)
How well does the eye detection on animals?
Have you noticed that the focus is not always right even it seems "locked" on the subject? Back button focus...I will try it. Thanks!
Should I use Af-C with zone or wide track you think?
Kensi KA zone gives more control. Wide sometimes picks strange things.
if i would like to shoot a flower that moves in the wind, what type of AF do i need?
I know this is quite old subject... any way what about inability of choosing focus point in Auto Mode, I am having this issue with xt30. Why would any one need a camera which wouldn't allow the user to chose what one take picture of???
A good and helpful video.. but, its more helpful if you add more capture examples for all type of focusing modes.
Thank you for your patience and professional to make this great video for us!!
Thank you!!!
"who goes to motorcycle races!?" 🤨
i do.
its actually why i bought a camera in the first place. ha! made me laugh...a little.
loving your tutorials mate. really has it all sink in and come together
with plenty of "ahh huhhh!" moments. after hours of reading the manual more than a few times.
cheers Omar. keep'm coming!

I bought an X-T20 a weeke ago and I'm loving your video
Love your X-20 video, they are funny and informative and have helped me order mine as I was torn between choosing my next camera. Keep them going 😊👍
Justin Nelson thanks so much!!
Hi, Omar!I love your work and thank you for all the help you have been giving me.Can you tell me, please, which modes would you use for street/travel photography?Thank you.MelHugs from Portugal

Love your X-T20 video's. Fun and very helpful. Thank you!
I got a question when im in AF-C mode CL i have the camera set to 5 ps im getting no where 5 frames per second it feels more like 2 frames per second why is that ?
Why does the screen flash white before finding focus?
hi Omar, thank you for al the videos that you're doing, these helps us a lot.
i just purchased a fuji xt20 ( xf 18-55mm F2.8-4 ), but i do have one concern, my camera won't switch to manual focusing, even if i turn the selector on S, C, or M, it does nothing, even "MF" doesn't appear on the screen.
i dont understand what's wrong ... what should i do ?
thank you a lot for your help
anouar hajjar make sure you are not on Full Auto mode.
i did check this, i putted the lens on manual so i can control the aperture myself ( through the aperture ring, this works pretty fine ), and once again, i turn the selector on M and it does nothing, i can't control the focusing manually ( MF doesn't appear on the screen ). i do not understand what's wrong

Next, the small AF switch on the kit lens may have turned off accidentally (this happened to me once). Third, make sure your focus point is set to what you want to focus. Forth, you're drunk. 🍹🍹
I would love to see you do a similar video for the xt3.
Great video Omar! One question, does the type of shutter (electronic of mechanical) has any influence on the autofocus options? Thnx! :)
Nope...same AF options..
hi Omar, great video:) i have a question haha which mode would you recommend for shooting group photos ? should i turn on face recognition? or simply choose one AF mode?
thanks!!
The "AF Mode" is written in grey (as opposed to white) on my display, and it won't allow me to click on it. Anyone know why or what to do? Thanks.
Hi Omar! I have a little problem. My images show up in black and white on Camera Raw or Photoshop. Have you had a similar problem? Thanks.
seval akyol I have not. First make sure your images are shot in RAW. A bw jpeg will forever be bw. Next, if your image is raw, try to "reset" the image. Perhaps the image is importing with a bw preset. Other than that I'm out of ideas lol
Perfect. Great video for just starting out. I have hooked people into going to Fuji so this is a great share video.
Excellent work Omar. Thank you for these awesome vídeos!
Thanks so much
How do you set up back button focus on the xt20 ?
Paulo Ferreira 5
Hey Omar what mode should I be if I were to be taking portraits or candids were people are having small movements? I tried continuous zone tracking mode and continuous single point but they still come out blurry. Thank you for your help!
Amelia Song make sure your shutter speed is fast enough for moving people. You probably want to be over 1/200th to be sure. Stick to single focus point but increase the size. Good luck.
You're the best! THank you ((:
Very funny and informative Omar. Well done.
super helpful once again!
I used to have AF mode menu on my xt-20. Now AF mode menu is blacked out. I can't click on it to change autofocus. What could beh the problem? Camera firmware is up to date.
You may be on manual on the front dial. AF modes on menu are then not available
Can you change focus on the display by finger while recording?
?
Very informative! Thanks for putting the work into this.
Does it have eye AF or continuous eye AF?
Hi Omar, is there any lock on autofocus mode for video on X-T20 ?
Yes. If you put in on single focus mode (S) and set the focus via touch or half-press...it will lock and stay. :)
Omar Gonzalez Photography does this work in video mode also? Have read conflicting reports on this issue... Thanks for the great videos.
Hi Mr. OMAR can i ask u something... i just bought my XT20 but without lens... just the body.. and when i opened ders no picture to see .. i just saw blurred.. So do i nees to buy lens to work my cam?
Rodel Leoncio Yes.
