      Get your facts straight before posting.As for O’ Ree he is going into the hall as an person who broke the color barrier in the NHL, not for his hockey play.Just to be specific.

      Ah yes, "Mr. Mint" - great dude... Back in the day I actually had some commons from his iconic 1952 Topps find which I personally purchased from him. Al was a really cool guy and I bought a bunch of cards from him at shows over the years.. I remember he would fill tons of 5,000 count box lids with mountains of literally random raw (not even sleeved) vintage cards - I mean there was anything vintage you could possibly imagine in those box lids - T206, Goudey, Play Ball, Bowman, Topps etc.. Al would sell them for a buck a piece - and it was nuts because some of the cards were in pretty good shape - not only that but, there were tons of stars and HOF'ers in the box lids as well. I mean I remember buying a G-VG Nolan Ryan Rookie, a VG Bench and an Ex Reggie Rookie from him for $20 bucks combined. Without a doubt "Mr. Mint" certainly lived up to the name "Mr. Mint" because it appeared if a card wasn't up to his standards he would sell it dirt cheap. But hey the guy did have 100's of 52 Topps #311 so beat up Ryan, Bench and Jackson Rookies were probably like commons to him, lol... I mean I remember going to a show in the mid-90's, I had no idea "Mr. Mint" was going to be there - but of course there he was the second you walked into the show - he was the first table you saw, dead ahead in front of you and I spent every penny I planned on spending at his tables, lol - not only that but I went home and got more money and spent that at his table, and that is the only time I have gone to a card show and had zero desire to check out the other tables because none of them could match what Mr. Rosen was selling, lol - at least not to me - and this wasn't a very big show at all, it was perhaps a 40 table show.. Oh and he brought some of the iconic cards from some of his finds and he would show them to anyone that asked... He had a couple of 52 Topps packs, among several other vintage packs he was showing off as well as a sealed pack of cigarettes with a tobacco card which looked almost brand new. It was almost like a baseball card museum, lol - it was just fantastic. And luckly I got to shop at his tables on several occasions during the 90's and he always had vintage cards for pennies on the dollar and of course plenty of vintage memorabilia which you would probably never seen in your life if it wasn't for him, lol.... The only thing is that I wish I would have known his show schedule in advance because I would have saved for months had I known he was going to be in my area at some of these shows I attended but the guy really popped up out of nowhere... I mean the guy was pretty humble factoring his status in the hobby considering he would do 40 table shows with no advertisement or anything - I mean if there was a "celebrity" in the hobby it was without question Al "Mr. Mint" Rosen, but unfortunately I read a few years back that he passed away, so the hobby world really lost a gem and a pioneer in the hobby...

      I have a few of each Topps & OPC which I won via eBay for less than $25 bucks a pop on average. The lowest I paid for a Bourque Rookie was $4 bucks and some change for a scratched Topps, but outside of it being scratched it's a razor sharp card, probably the nicest I have.. Too bad being scratched despite it being otherwise flawless only makes it a PSA 5 card. I mean it's pack fresh and displays really well. It's essentially not worth much because it's scratched, but when I won it there was still some of that black "scratch-off" nonsense left on the card so I went ahead and carefully scratched the rest off so now it displays like an OPC and could easily pass for one from the front, obviously the backs are quite different tho...
      I'll say this much, I picked a really good time to get back into the hobby, and I picked a really good time to go on an 80's hockey "shopping spree"... A few years back I dropped like 2.5K on nothing but 80's hockey because it's the era I grew up in and I just had to have all of the rookies, lol.. Well I have all of the sets too but with this spike in value it's nice to see that I didn't flush my money down the toilet... I mean I didn't really buy for investment reasons but I'm not complaining, lol..

      Sure if you're looking for particular singles but you can still find a lot of these cards in hockey lots on eBay on the cheap - certainly for far less than what the card would cost you as a single... The thing is that some eBay sellers just title their listing as "Vintage Hockey Card Lot" or "Old Topps Hockey Cards" or with similar vague titles/descriptions, then you click the auction and it's a gold mine, lol..... But I have also had plenty of luck finding rookie singles with really cheap "BIN" prices just by clicking "newly listed"... I mean one time I found a NM-MT Topps Yzerman Rookie for $1.49 "Buy It Now" and 1 dollar shipping just checking out the newly listed auctions - and I was actually looking for a reasonably priced Yzerman Rookie for my 84/85 set so that was a fantastic find. The only problem with the card is that it's off-centered left to right 80/20, but other than that it's a really sharp card and there was absolutely no way at all that card would have lasted any longer had I not found it, lol.. for $2.49 shipped to my door? that's almost like some sort of magic, lol.

    Great info Chris..While people were going nuts in 87-91 for the McGwires, Cansecos, Griffey etc...I was buying hockey, football and basketball..Unfortunately I owned a store and sold most of them..Still have a handful of vintage hockey and some sets ...A NOTE...The 1988 OPC Hull, Nieuwendyk, Shanahan were counterfeited along with Turgeon from the 1988 OPC set in the early 90's..P. S. The reason for the Sakic Topps being worth more its the price of the wax boxes..Topps cost 2x as much as OPC..

      I would presume that's probably due to quantity of submissions, tho perhaps the OPC has a "continuous flaw"... I have noticed that both the Topps & OPC have centering issues, because it is somewhat difficult to find centered examples of both. It kinds reminds me of the 71-72 Topps & OPC where 90% of the cards are O/C... Then again it is 2021 and the increase in value for cards in general just seem to be random, lol..

      the OPC's, particularly this year, are notoriously prone to damage and bad centring, in all years there are significantly more topps than OPC on the market but this year is particularly brutal for that: for whatever reason there is a tremendous amount of 1981-82 topps hockey on the market. even more deflating for their market value is that most of the cards actually came out looking pretty good! centring and condition for the topps this year is all quite top notch, so it's quite easy to find high grades at low values (1972 topps hockey incidentally has the same issue - lots of cheap PSA 10s available). if you just care about the aesthetics of the card in relation to the price than it's certainly smarter to buy the topps (I do myself) but there is no doubt the OPC are rarer, more desirable and a better 'investment'

    • @Swoop187OG187
      @Swoop187OG187 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off OPC had larger sets - but also when you factor population there are more hockey card collectors in the United States than Canada, and both US and Canadian collectors prefer OPC for different reasons. As stated OPC had larger sets, also US collectors prefer OPC because it's rarer in the states and Canadians prefer OPC for a couple of reasons, for one they're very nationalistic and prefer Canadian products and second OPC is printed in French Canadian and believe it or not Quebec and eastern Canada in general has a large population that can't speak, hence read English, so they prefer cards they can read - and as stated OPC has larger sets.... I mean yea, OPC cards are a little rarer but the demand is a lot higher... Also, you have to remember that before our present internet OPC were pretty rare in the states because there was no networking and most card shops only carried Topps, but now that's moot because hockey collectors in the US have the same access to OPC as Canadians, but the perception that OPC are "rarer" or "better/more interesting/exotic" still persists .. Me personally as a hockey collector I like both and I collect both, I mean I have both complete Topps and OPC sets from 1969-70 to 1989-90 and I'm presently working the 60's right now. However If I could choose I would pick OPC - just because the sets are bigger and OPC were the first to issue rookie cards if Topps didn't release them the same year, so a lot of OPC sets have rookies that Topps didn't have until the following year if not later. Of course that's why if you can remember you would see **FTC** next to a players name in Beckett which stood for "First Topps Card", and sometimes it wasn't close - some players had to wait a decade before Topps issued their card while they were a staple in OPC sets over that period of time.... Also, the OPC cards that Topps didn't issue in their sets were very cool - there were All-Star cards, trophy winners, team cards and obviously the rookies and players that weren't issued in Topps, not to mention OPC had inserts in certain years to boot... I mean, for example in 1989-90 Joe Sakic has 3 Rookie Cards - the one everyone is familiar with #113 but Sakic also has a team leader card and a team card where he's clearly pictured to represent the Nords. Now I don't know if the latter is considered a "rookie"or has any more value than any other team card in the set but Sakic is clearly the subject on 3 cards..
      But yea, those are just a few reasons why OPC is more desired, hence valued higher.

    Cool video. I am not a big collector but I have Mario Lemieuxs RC (PSA 6 but whatever) I just wanted that one card because he was my fave player as a kid. I would rather have that card than Gretzkys.

  • @Swoop187OG187
    @Swoop187OG187 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow these cards have really sky rocketed over the last 6 months. I have several of all of them, except for the Gretzky of course, I just have one Topps and one OPC, and the Topps would grade perhaps a PSA 2 or 3 and the OPC would grade "Authentic", lol - but the rest I have at least 5 each with all of the graded ones being PSA 8 or higher... I really haven't looked back on the values of 80's rookies in a while and the last time I checked a lot of cards just weren't worth the grading fees to have them professionally graded, and several still aren't but that's OK... I have "bricks" of the Kurri, Savard, LaFontaine, Sakic and Leetch Rookies, I actually just broke an 89-90 OPC vending case I just couldn't pass up for $150 bucks, adding to the bricks of 89-90 I already have, but I can't pass up a vending case for $150 bucks. But yea, I would actually give the aforementioned rookies away to customers that spent more than $50 bucks with me, that and they were good as "toss ins" when I was late getting a package out - I would just grab a couple of them, pop them in a top loader and toss them in the package and the buyer forgets the package is a couple of days late when they get Kurri and Sakic rookies for free , lol... And I didn't pay much for any of them - I mean I think I got a brick of Kurri rookies for like $30 bucks, so .30 cents each and the rest were $20 or less for a brick......
    The 80's were certainly a fun decade for hockey, and the sport did escape the junk wax craze of the mid to late 80's experienced in other sports, mostly in baseball and football - of course that changed in the early 90's when numerous brands came out of nowhere and started mass-producing cards.

      @@collectorinvestordealer
      Well, a few years back when I was buying tons of 80's hockey there were a bunch of IDK, dealers I would presume??? selling bricks for cheap advertising/listing them as "fresh from vending case", so I would assume they were breaking vending cases and pulling the nicer cards they planned to have graded and selling the ones in bricks that didn't pass their eye test... The thing is if you're just a collector you generally don't want a brick, you know? you only want a couple and you're not going to drop $30 bucks on a brick for a card you can buy for $2.00 - I mean what's a collector going to do with a brick? lol.. Obviously me being a dealer it was well worth it. Like I said they're excellent "toss-ins" to balance out a trade or if you're late shipping and obviously just selling as singles for a few bucks when you only paid .30 cents for the card.. Trust me, you'll get some fantastic eBay feedback if you toss in Kurri & Sakic Rookies as a bonus if you're late a couple of days shipping, lol.. Not only that but I have quite a few bricks of quite a few rookies and HOF'ers. One of which is a brick of 81-82 Topps Gretzky as well, so I was selling both the Kurri Rookie and Gretzky 3rd year as a lot of (2) for $6.99 "BIN", I suppose I could get more for it now eh? lol. I just "maxed out" on my eBay quantity and didn't relist the lot..I just felt compelled to hold onto them, because $6.99 is pretty cheap when you factor it's a Kurri Rookie and a Gretzky 3rd year or $3 bucks a card and $40 book between the two. Yea, I don't know why Gretzky's 1981-82 Topps #16 is so undervalued, believe it or not but the card is his second least valued of the 80's right behind the 89-90 Topps/OPC, but it's a 3rd year card of "The Great One" lol... I mean it makes no sense and with the spike in prices/value I would expect that card to sky rocket at some point - after all it's a 3rd year card, it's a vintage card and it's a totally undervalued card and it's not like it's a DP or something. So if you plan on doing a video on "undervalued cards" that card is a really good candidate for "buy low, sell high"....
      But yea, like I pointed out - bricks are a really good buy right now because collectors have no interest in 100 x the same card, unless they PC the player or something - generally only dealers would have an interest just due to the price and quantity, so they can be had for pretty cheap, and I will usually buy anything if I can sell it and get my investment back in a reasonable amount of time. I mean bricks are certainly a long-term investment.. Like the Kurri for example, I paid .30 cents each and sold them for $1.99 each + shipping, and I think they book for $15 or $20 bucks each - so that's a fair price and I only had to sell 15 of them to make my initial investment back on each brick so after the 15 I'm making $170 profit at $2 bucks each for the other 85 in each brick, so it's well worth it for a $30 dollar investment - but like I said, and you probably know - it's a long-term investment, but it's all profit after you sell 15 cards..
      As you probably know - t's pretty simple, the more you buy, the cheaper the unit price, and of course the more quantity the more expensive and the less interest/demand.. I mean buying a brick is one thing but buying a "Platinum Brick" (1,000 cards) is an entirely different discussion, lol... And yes indeed I do have several "Platinum Bricks" and to be honest I don't believe I will ever sell them all, tho I'm way into profit territory with all of them - but it's hard to sell 1,000 of a particular card - it's like you never run out, every time you look at the box it's like you haven't sold any, lol.. So yea, I've gone beyond just bricks, lol.

      In 89-90 OPC were DP's and Topps were SP's, in laymen's terms Topps printed less than they usually did and OPC printed more than they usually did... Well, they're not technically SP's or DP's but you get the idea.... Either way the Sakic is a difficult card to find in a PSA 10 because of the "continuous centering flaws" - the majority - like 90% - of both Topps and OPC Sakic Rookies are OC usually left to right ...

He would reject the trade and said the only card he'd take was Lemieux rookie. Soooooo.......my brother and I made a deal with a guy down the street that had two Lemieux rookies. We traded Lafontaine and Yzerman rookie for it. A few days later one of HIS buddies asked me to go trading one afternoon. He was a bit an asshole bully and basically stole our Patrick Roy and Mario Lemieux rookie cards. In the end we ended up getting back the Yzerman and Lafontaine rookies but the Roy was still missing. So we had the Lemieux card for 2-3 days and never ever got the chance to make the Gretzky trade. It still stings to this day.
