Brilliant podcast Luke. The answer about accents is spot on, it is actually one of the main reason why foreign learners luck confidence in their speaking.
Such an amazing episode he really simplifies his answers for people who don't really understand linguistic terms. Simple and satisfying answers. Also his accent is fantastic I liked it. I do agree with what he said about how people nowadays accept some certain features of English from non native English speakers. And the fact that we cannot talk about the death of English language for the near future. Looking forward to listening to the second part.
Thank you, Luke and David. I think reinstalling grammar in secondary schools was a clever idea. Spelling and phonetics lessons should also be included un the syllabus, not only in British schools but in every school in the world for the teaching of English or any other language. This podcast Is 7 years old. I wonder what Is happening in schools right now! 😊
'Big red dog' or 'Red big dog'. Which is it correct? How important is it? Most native english speakers know the right answer, but they DO NOT why. Grammar is useful when you start acquiring a language from scratch...as long as you go ahead, it becomes useless.
Why should I know how a certain grammar rule works? I mean, for the sake of the communication. I'm able to speak my native language perfectly (I swear😂) without knowing grammar rules and without thinking about that stuff.
when you start to learn a language you need basic grammar and later, when you learn it further you need to learn grammar more and more. You are learning grammar even if you don't aware of it when you are listening to a lot, reading a lot.
Speaking about" glamorous grammar",isn't it the same with deixis ? Deixis for me is just naming the pronouns and here where it is finished . What is the use of giving a "scientific" name to the things which are obvious for everyone. I mean does it make a use ?
It was a privilege to be able to interview David Crystal. I hope you all enjoy listening to it. The automatic subtitles are surprisingly accurate.
