Being an Indian comes with its own prejudices and judgements from random people around the world, especially when it comes to the accent. As an American English speaker, I love Indian and Pakistani English! I think the English vocabulary in many parts of India and especially media is really cool, and I love listening to my friends from Pakistan speak so much. Especially because of India's history of colonization, English belongs to you as much as it belongs to me. I hope you stay proud of your accent :)

GOSH!!!! Mr. David Crystal!!!! He IS a LEGEND, and I am afraid he will be alone in that position for a long, long time. It is a pleasure to see that I think the same as he does, regarding learning and teaching a language. I am stil recovering from the surprise of learning that he helped with the famous Quirk's grammar, it was a BIG book, both in size and content. I have recently purchased one, out of love for that book (or time of my life, who knows 😳). I have never seen him in person, he is both adorable and delightfully entertaining, I could be listening to him for HOURS. You are a lucky man, it would be an incredible honour to speak to him. Congratulations!

Quite a resourceful interview. I really enjoyed watching it and listening to the venerated linguist, David Crystal. Like him, I also think that intelligibility should count much more than the accent of the speaker. I always enjoy being able to identify speakers of the English language through their accents. This channel is so educative, and I am happy to have subscribed to it.

As a Filipino English teacher who teaches Koreans , it's really hard to compete with the "so-called" native speakers , see most Filipinos have been studying English all their lives still we are underpaid because of our cultural background , most of us are trying our best to disguise our accent just to fit in , nevertheless I have accepted that fact and got no choice but to thrive .
It was pleasure to watch your conversation. That is my goal, to speak freely without worrying about my accent. The only frustraition I have is that I'm lacking of words and I sound dumb for myself, because I cant express myself the way I would in my language.
The problem with identity is that it's not as simple as David puts it. Nationality doesn't even begin to cover it; race, ethnicity, etc...renders the whole issue very complex. How would you account for bilingualism for example?

Very interesting interview, thanks Christian. Yes, vocabulary building is key for many of my students who are at intermediate level and wanting to improve towards an advanced or proficiency level (broadly speaking or actual CAE exam focused) I use some books for topic based lessons, but I also ask the students to choose their own materials from books, internet, magazines, newspapers, work documents, presentations, brochures, etc. I don't recommend learning lists per se, but I do encourage them to make their own list/dictionary/vocabulary book where they make notes of new vocabulary that the will actually use regularly. We then do role play, debate, general conversation etc. about the topics that interests them.

Also, I beleive that your interesting and new ideas & approach to teaching and learning English are very useful to teachers and students alike. A big thanks for your work :)
What I have experienced is that after starting to learn English sounds and beginning to pronounce them, the tone of my voice shifts from my native tone to a new one when I speak English. I don't understand what happened, but with this new voice tone, I can speak English much faster.
This is a very interesting topic which - despite being an English teacher here in the States for over 20 years - I've just become aware of. I think it's quite complex and I still have a lot of thoughts and feelings to process on the matter. I appreciate this conversation.
This is my first encounter with Mr. Crystal. He's a fascinating lecturer. I agree with his point that accents can be very charming as long as they don't interfere with intelligibility. As a Yank, I find Mr. Crystal's accent so slight that by the end of the video I could hardly hear it and was certain that he must have spent a good deal of his life on this side of the pond. Yet, according to his bio he's lived in the UK his entire life.

Also for anyone who may be interested, active learning approaches towards vocabulary are beneficial. play snap with vocab words, play the memory game with the words on cards and match them to pictures or match them to English words and try to remember. Even taking tests will help you to learn and memorise the words. Then, write.. write write, because you want to be able to remember actively and draw on those words when you want them, not just remember them when prompted.
I must say I agree with what he says about vocabulary. To be honest, the best way that I managed to learn a foreign language vocabulary is by having a constant. Meaning I first read the 3 rd volume of the Harry Potter books about 3 times in English. That was my constant. then I bought the same book in French, and Greek and started searching for the words which gave me trouble. To be honest, at least for me, that is the best way of accumulating vocabulary in any foreign language: reading books that you enjoy, where you're patient enough to search for words and have that "aha" moment every time you discover a new one.

"let's assume now that we've got somebody who is pretty fluent in English but has got a pretty strong accent - Spanish accent Portuguese accent, French accent or whatever, as long as that person is intelligible to me I have no problem with that whatsoever, in fact, the intelligibility drive is present..."
There's a bunch of nations appear from time to time that want to be heard or be recognized as a different nation. It's not a secret that it's easy to be proud of being British citizen or someone from EU, even with a very noticeable accent. Think about some other countries, citizens of which are not that proud...
