Cam, I do a lot of cold cast metal figures . I use urethane clear resins as my binder, but the concept is the same as for epoxy. Metallic figures can be a budget killer due to the expense of the metal, which of course is tied directly to solid metal per pound cost. I slush coat my figures with at least two separate coats of metallic/resin then fill with the same resin but using an inexpensive filler(glass bead, urefill, etc), I have even used chop fibre where strength is needed. Have you considered doing a partial fill with bulked epoxy, then reserving your metallic powder for the top 1/8th or so ?
Cam, a good idea on how to really stretch the brass powder and make it last longer would be to fill all but approximately an 1/8" of your cracks with a clear or black dyed epoxy and then mix up a small batch of clear epoxy and the brass powder and fill in the remainder. I'm curious if you played around with this idea. And if you did, what was your results? Also, I bet this would look flipping badass against the black of a burnt tabletop! Love the way this turned out and that hardware is top shelf, my good sir. Top shelf indeed!

@@BlacktailStudio Actually I'd have made the desk to accommodate wireless charging as you already drilled holes for the brass fittings and one more shouldn't make that much of a difference. I love the brass! It reminds me a bit of the Japanese technique kintsugi. They use gold to decoratively repair broken pottery/dishes. The philosophy behind it is embracing the history of the dish instead of trying to hide the cracks and damage.

Cam, it's safe to say that it's smart looking. The brass tone really pops against the wood tones. It would be interesting to see what other metallic colours ( copper or a silver looking alloy) you could integrate. I'd be keen to see a silver used with a darker walnut tint. Cam, I have to say I love the desk. I’m going to have to show my husband this and figure out a way to make a rose gold color for the resin pour for my sewing and workspace desk!
Anything made like this with all these features is more of a genius desk than a smart desk!! Been watching your older videos and haven't been disappointed once on skill or the outcome of any project. I used the form build for sun bent table to make my interior panels on my 34 ford chop top. Cut multiple thin lines in boards and curved and then set with fiberglass resin and woven mat. CAM, That turned out to be a super gorgeous desk. I know it's probably be pretty expensive but I think it would look awesome to see one of the next desks or dining room tables you build with that brass epoxy pour rather than the black river look you usually do, though that is beautiful as well. I just think it would be a cool look doing it with the brass or copper color epoxy just to see how it turns out

Cam, I want to thank you for your amazing videos. First off, I know nothing about woodworking. My channel is on tube radio restorations. However, I’ve been down and out with Covid for the last week, and have watched many (really, a lot!) of your videos while I was practically unable to do anything, so I thank you. Keep up the great work.
Cam, I’d love to incorporate some of the desk hardware in a pair of end tables for a living room set. Could you provide a source for the outlet inserts and that lamp?
Cam, this desk you made for your wife was certainly one of the most unique desks, I have ever seen, with those USB, socket, and whatever she may need. The desk light was super sweet. But the best part was the brass resin around in various places. The wood was just Beautiful. You have a real gift with your ideas and workmanship. Then to share all your ways to do things. Really awesome love your channel.
Cam: I would not build in a charger, as the technology keeps evolving. My latest charger is a fast charger in a phone holder that holds the phone upright. It is instantly visible and keeps the phone from getting buried in the clutter.
Cam - are there covers you can put on the USB plugs to help keep out crud for the long term? Another beautiful project. "...something she was gonna like that I was capable of doing..." isn't that always the problem :)
I just wonder, rather than standing out as an independent aesthetical element, metallic and impressive, how would it be like if all the gaps were filled with a humble material blended into the wood texture?
@Sage Eckman yeah I agree with you there. Might just be me but if my phone is going dead it's cause I've been using it. And I don't want to have to put my phone down and not use it. Also I'll be glad when USB C replaces everything, but for some reason they're not in a big rush to do so.
Those type A's are just for power though not data, all usb 2 and later standards can provide 5 V 1 Amp which is the most common charging standard. Fast charging would require a USB 3.0 or later as it requires up to 15V and up to 4.5 Amp. I imagine this was probably an aesthetic choice. At the end of the day though. If you've got the charger there on the desk does it need to be fast?
I wanted to know the same. Took way too much searching to find. Looks like Juniper Design Ground Control and Thin Task Lamp. www.juniper-design.com/products/thin-task-lamp-desk-inset/
Cam, love the desk man, wouldn’t change a thing! Did you use a router led to get the slab flat? Or did you buy it already surfaced? Thanks and keep up the good work( oh and links to the plugs &lights ?)

Worked perfect!!! Thank you!!❤❤
Cam, It should be named, amazingly beautiful desk!!!! Great job buddy!!!
Cam, that’s a beautiful desk. No need to make it “smarter” when it looks as nice as it does.
Thanks buddy!!
Blacktail Studio just wondering, you said that the brass powder is expensive, how much were they a bag?
Disagree. Smarter is always better.
Wow. You really went crazy with all the stuff from Juniper Design. I know how much their stuff costs!!
Cam, awesome work!
Cam, it is priceless, a labour of love. I wish my wife could make one like that for me since she has got load of tools and machines from her elderly dad. Good work!!
Cam, this was stunning! Looking forward to my heart attack recovery so i can try a slab table.
Your videos are always very motivational.
Thanks!
Best wishes to you my friend...!!! Be well..!!!
For the curious, those outlets are from juniper design.
Cam, i wish i would have discovered your channel earlier. I am not a wood worker but infind myself watching your videos a lot. Thanks for the great content.
CAM, That turned out to be a super gorgeous desk. I know it's probably be pretty expensive but I think it would look awesome to see one of the next desks or dining room tables you build with that brass epoxy pour rather than the black river look you usually do, though that is beautiful as well. I just think it would be a cool look doing it with the brass or copper color epoxy just to see how it turns out
Definitely would not classify it as “just another desk”. Holy smokes. Perfect aesthetically. Wow.
If the brass shine more like metal could look amazing too, great work! Felicidades.
CAM: I wrote to you on another video -- just to say this 85 year old lady greatly enjoys your videos. Such amazing woodwork! Gorgeous! (And yes, I USED to look like this little photo!) Gwendolyn
Cam: “What she likes vs. What I’m capable of doing.” I think you’ve summed up marriage.
Yes Dear, while mid-air, when she says jump... 39+ years... Well trained :)
@@darinking1343 It's called "domesticated" LOL
This comment won the internet today.
He sure did 🥳
Cam, Love the desk. Although I would have added the wireless charger. the wife and I are working a design for a shared desk. 56 X 50 using canary wood. May try and incorporate the brass epoxy. Have to present the idea. Love your builds, keep up the great work.
I originally planned to, but the wife talked me out of it. I’m sure yours will be awesome.
@@BlacktailStudio I would wait. it wouldn't be hard to carve out a section after words and add a coil and driver in the future. TechIngredients might be able to help you with that and a speaker driver later. It would also be neat to have an integrated themocouple cooler / heater into the desk to keep beverages warm/cool.
Cam, honestly I wish I could learn this work, am like crazy about, ahm my dad has a factory and imagine being the first to build such things and epoxy tables in Nigeria....great work man it's unfortunate.
I started watching your videos yesterday…and I am watching till now, I just can’t stop watching it…wonderful work brother
It is definitely NOT "just another desk." Good lord that's beautiful!
Wow thanks!
Cam: This is pretty spectacular! Your wife must be so pleased!
Man, I hope so! Thanks so much
Cam, that desk was stunning! Love your videos! I find them so relaxing and having worked in a casework’s shop I love watching you build these tables and desks!
Cam... This design and craftsmanship is absolutely stunning! Thank you so much for making such great TH-cam content. So generous of you to include the viewers in these processes, and putting the effort in to making these truly stress relieving videos.
"Since this was going to be her desk, we had to come up with something that she was gonna like and that i was capable of doing." A real man knows his limitations; #respect
You know . . .
" YES DEAR"
Cam I have a great idea for more of that brass epoxy, what about a lightning table with the brass epoxy!? I think it would look unreal!
🤯
Every thing looks amazing. The Brass contrast is the real deal.
Thanks buddy!!
That was going to be my exact question. Love that light
Commenting to keep updated :)
They are from Juniper designs you can find them online
Loved this video. Any links to the hardware used? (light switch, lamp, plugs)
I found some by a company named Juniper Design
$550 for the lamp? Yea nah!
@Parker Corley Yup, but you will have to find a matching one....
Cam, just saw this. On the bowties, have you ever thought about leaving them slightly below the surface and then filling in with the liquid brass?
It's still going to look like a bowtie
@@python3574 and Cam-Yes, thats true, but it will be a Brass bowtie!
Cam - are there covers you can put on the USB plugs to help keep out crud for the long term? Another beautiful project.
"...something she was gonna like that I was capable of doing..." isn't that always the problem :)
Oh, good question
Cam, I really enjoy watching your process. You explain everything. I build furniture too, but your stuff is next level. Thank you.
Could someone attach the link to the desk lamp used? It looks soo cool, I want one for myself!
juniper-design.com/products/thin-task-lamp-desk-inset/ They are crazy expensive
@@alirada7827 how do you know that's the same lamp? There's no way thats the same one.
Cam: where did you get all those brass fittings from. Loved how the finished off the desk and tied in so well
The brass grommets are part of Juniper Design Ground Control line.
www.juniper-design.com/
$100 for each fitting? I guess it's intended for CEOs.
I just wonder, rather than standing out as an independent aesthetical element, metallic and impressive, how would it be like if all the gaps were filled with a humble material blended into the wood texture?
Cam, it’s November 2024 so I don’t expect a response! Just wanted you to know I watched to the end! The desk is stunning!
3:01 the desk looks like it's screaming in agony.
Oh shit, now that's gonna haunt my nightmares
Not a art desk, but holy shit that is cool. Beautiful piece.
Thanks Isaac!
"the wireless charging technology might be a bit dated" but you put two USB type A ports there? :-P
@Sage Eckman yeah I agree with you there. Might just be me but if my phone is going dead it's cause I've been using it. And I don't want to have to put my phone down and not use it. Also I'll be glad when USB C replaces everything, but for some reason they're not in a big rush to do so.
My guess is that the type A ports can easily be changed out for an insert with type Cs.
USB A is probably going to be around for the next 10 years usb c is great gir high power applications and high speed applications.
No Cam, no answer.
Cam - I love this desk! Your wife is lucky to have such a great place to sit and work. Just gorgeous
Cam, who makes that light and those other inserts (USB, power, and light switch) they are beautiful. also amazing work.
I wanted to know the same. Took way too much searching to find. Looks like Juniper Design Ground Control and Thin Task Lamp.

it’s just a beautiful smart desk.
Stunning desk. I love the light and other fixtures.

Thanks David!
Cam I live my life vicariously thru you, the ability to create and express yourself thru your artistic abilities is amazing.. 😊
Cam, love the desk man, wouldn’t change a thing! Did you use a router led to get the slab flat? Or did you buy it already surfaced? Thanks and keep up the good work( oh and links to the plugs &lights ?)
Had it planed flat to start. And sorry, I don’t have a link 😫
Blacktail Studio sweet thanks!
