Great video. I think the point about Amami not being “full cyberpunk” misses some elements of the story though. Amami city is supposed to a recent thing. There are many people in the city (including the MCs mom), who don’t use computers and have no understanding of them. People are still in the process of adopting computers into their homes. The fact that it mostly looks like a normal city is more realistic which I think helps ground the story more.
@@Genethagenius It’s very light when you compare it to things like Ghost in the Shell or Blade Runner is what I mean. Most characters wear normal contemporary clothes and there aren’t robots and holograms and stuff. If you remove VR from it, it doesn’t seem really any more advanced than the late 90s when it was released. The only characters that dress “weird” are the hackers.

I’m hoping my mind will be changed when I finally play it, but it just seems so Anime, but not in a good way. (And I love Anime).
@@Genethagenius actually I’ve been avoiding as much as I can until release. I’m the type that likes to go into games as blind as possible lol. I’m not 100% into the look myself, but if the characters are good I can look past it 😆
Devil Summoner is a very stylish series, love the atmosphere they have and the Raidou games have some of the most underrated Megaten characters imo Soul Hackers is also a geat intro into the Classic style of Megaten games, and some of the most fun dungeon crawling in the series, and I hope Soul Hackers 2 can live up to it. Great Video and yes Nemissa is Bae :D
I'm so glad to see the Selling You On series continue! If you end up covering the Raidou games someday and want a guest for that video, I'd like to nominate Strain42. He's become synonymous with the Raidou duology in my mind, and convinced me I need to play them...someday.
Well, I like it for its story, and it makes me wish we got the Devil Summoner game, too. Also, Nemissa was quite the character, and not only was she a great party member, but she also showed a strong personality. The gameplay could use some adjustments here and there.
as someone who's played the game physically (still got my copy) I fully agree that Soul Hackers is awesome and I'm looking forward to the sequel... even if there might not be a character as awesome as Nemissa in it..
Easily my favorite of the classic Megaten games. Great atmosphere, even better music. The story leaves a little bit to be desired imo but not a deal breaker. Highly recommended.
Soul hackers was my first smt game so it's obviously my favourite one but also for the fact that I love the occult and the cyber punk genre and this game puts them together really well. While the characters and story could have been better in my opinion it's still a great story in my book. The atmosphere is really well done too with how you start discovering this underground world of demons that's always existed under your nose. It's truly a fantastic experience especially for a game as old as it is.
Well it depends on your opinion but after the e shop closes there will be no way to play it except getting it physically which is quite expensive so it will be necessary to hack your console to enjoy a lot of amazing titles the 3ds have to offer but in the end the choice is yours
These games are really great, especially if you engage them as a game preservation experience. They're time capsules. As you said already, they give the player a glimpse of the type of mechanics and designs to expect from 90's disc era based RPGs. There's some hiccups I felt with some of the puzzle segments being tedious, but it has an unmissable charm for sure. Not to mention, each game that ends up under the Shin Megami name, there's always a few delightful catchy tunes to be had in each entry.

It is quite good in my opinion, but because it really does rely on its characters so much in this modern day, a failure to connect with them will result in a time that’s not exactly fun-filled.

I remember getting Soul Hackers on the 3DS when it first came out in 2013, turning it on aaaaaaand putting it down again. Then I gave it a 2nd shot aaaaaaaaand I wasn't getting it. 3rd or 4th time was the charm however and I finally finished it a year or so ago. Honestly I think that getting overwhelmed by all the demons that Nemichi gave me combined with the Demon Loyalty system which I was NOT familiar with and the story failing to hook me by the time I was sent to annoy Dr Thrill was what kept me from finishing this game. But my mama didn't raise no quitter and so I persevered and found myself with one of the most unique games in the Megaten franchise with an awesome early 90's cyberpunk story with a final boss that I broke like the Batman! Seriously the final boss's physical build with Nemissa's lightning skill set is the biggest joke I have ever seen. Definitely recommend getting this game on the 3DS before the store closes.
Just got this game off the 3DS store and it ROCKS! We love the cyberpunk aesthetic mixed with the hi-tech occult storyline! Very much like the original Shin Megami storyline.
I recall picking up the 3DS Version a while back when it had come out, and although I didn't get very far in it (I recall getting stuck at the Museum because I kept forgetting stuff plus don't know much about Astrology), I did find it to be very interesting. Kind of been wanting to go back into it, though not sure if to start fresh or continue my run.
I love Soul Hackers to death. Every aspect of the game just perfectly caters to me and I highly recommend it to anyone into cyberpunk content. Cautious about 2 tho.

But it is dated and the game can get repetitive with the dungeons and combat since the dungeons are all layed out the same besides a couple. And like you said in the video theres a few difficulty spikes that sucked having to deal with (Azazel for me). The only other SMT game i've played is Persona 3 FES
Nemissa is great, wish she was the main character. In fact one of my biggest complaint about the Persona/SMT games(and some other game franchises) is the lack of a female leads. I mean we got one in Persona 2 EP and only as an option in one of P3 special editions, as for SMT....
I love nemissa so much that I am disappointed she is not in soul hackers 2. I personally don't think soul hackers is all that brutal considering what other 90's games were like. for newbies who might be having some trouble, if you let yourself wander around and explore, then nemissa and the main character will usually be strong enough to solve most problems with little help. If you ever really need demons to help though and theyre a bit disagreeable you can always use the alcohol items to change their personality temporarily. you will get one specific demon who always does what you say and can be fed other demons for new skills and stats, but I feel like the mileage with it varies. anyway the paradigm x love tester told me victor was my ideal man and I'm mad it was able to read into my weird tastes that well, 0/10
Soul Hackers I just did quite vibe with. The story did nothing for me and I found the loyalty system cooler in theory than practice. That said, I am looking forward to the sequel.
(realistically my next video will probably be a "is a good game" for Xenoblade 3, but my next big video that requires research and stuff will be cyber sleuth)

I'm surprised at how many negative reviews soul hackers 2 ended up getting. Smt fans need to be a little more grateful. This game comes out of nowhere and instead of just being happy and excited, the criticism has never stopped. I had a wonderful time playing so hackers two and I think it was a phenomenal game.
Great video! Played the game before and my first impressions when I finished it was… I didn’t like it. Granted, with time and other Megaten games under my belt, I think I was too harsh on Soul Hackers. If anything, I actively didn’t pay attention to the Demon Loyalty system and I died constantly to instant death spells (again, probably my fault for not upgrading equipment properly). I want to revisit the game again after I play some older MegaTen games, but I look back on it fondly. Get hyped for Soul Hackers 2!! Snagged the CE like the Atlus simp that I am 🙃 here’s hoping we can get a translation of Devil Summoner… we can dream here 🥲

If you are just slightly interested in the game, get it before the E shop on 3DS is gone forever. It's pretty cheap anyway.
