- www.guitarmessenger.com/?p=12634 - TABS, VIDEO, TEXT, AUDIO. Periphery's Jake Bowen demonstrates and breaks down the second solo of 'Luck As A Constant' off of Periphery II: This Time It's Personal.
I did the first AAL album with him, and he came back to me for the latest album which I wrote 7 songs with him for.
Jake Bowens killer skill is summed up by the fact that he plays the Racecar Loomis solo live
Does he really play it? I figured Misha would do it. I thought this was the only solo Jake did.
that moment when you learn the first half of the solo and then for the second one you realize you need 24 frets for 1 note and you only have 22 :(
tune to standard :)
If you bend enough you can reach that note.
😜
That one Wes Hauch solo requires 27 frets :)
hahahhaaaha.....nice one man

Sucks to be you
This is BY FAR my favorite guitar solo of all time. He described it perfectly when he said "pretty then crazy, pretty then crazy." I listen to this song and finish it, then I always have to rewind and listen to the solo a second time. Gives me goosebumps every time.
Same here dude. Same here
I really enjoyed how Jake describes his creation and concept of the solo itself. Like another story.
As the nephew of John petrucci this dude rocks
Wish he did more tutorials. I love the words he uses to describe the phrasing.
"What would Adam D. and Joel do..." Great advice for life in general, not just guitar playing!
Wow. That tone is amazing...
I love his insight on why he wrote what he wrote.
One of my favourites solos from Periphery :D
Great Job Jake!!!
Holy crap there is a lot of thought that went into this solo!
This is my favorite solo on the album. Didn't now it was Jake playing it.
Periphery has such great phrasing in their solos! Cool lesson :)
Seeing them in may!!!
Great lead sound/tone!
Great vid. No time to argue via TH-cam comments. I'm off to the next video!
hahaha LOVE THIS BAND. Dimebag is definitely my inspiration too. everything bout this band is perfect
The intro song is 'Facepalm Mute' :)
I love how almost the whole solo consists of tributes to other guitar players.
the song in the beginning is called facepalm mute from Periphery II :)
PHOEN1X Its Luck as a Constant
Rohith Subramaniam ... No it's not, , , , , . . . . . - ---
Periphery is the sum of all its parts, so it is genial
time to learn some new licks!
Nice :) love the killswitch influence!
that's pretty cool, thanks for the info :)
We do that already and everyone was credited properly in the booklet, of course only people who actually bought the album are privy to that info unfortunately.
I want that guitar!
I wish I could like this more.
I wish you could play guitar for me all day. AMAZING
I guess time... when I saw you guys live I already noticed that you did a good job accentuating each person during his solo with the lights and stuff. I guess over time the fans will find out what the other guys are doing. I know that for example the riffing solo on Ji is of Mark Holcombs origin so I already have mad respect for the guy for that one. Just don't force anything and let time spread the attention. Also, why was nolly on the background in Amstelveen? too bad! the dude is awesome!
Yes.
Per Nelson!!!
This actually makes the solo a lot easier to play than with the tab I learned it with haha.
i like the effect in the solos man how do u get that
Jake has 2 sick solos on this album, Mraky plays the Have a Blast solo live, moving forward both of them will be contributing more to leads, so we already did that haha. Any other ideas?
he was the keyboard tech actually. also they didnt write the solo together. Jake asked him to create a solo that is very Erotomania like. But the solo was entirely dont by Petrucci
I think that so many people might always think that you do all of the leads is probably how similar all of the guitar tones can be for everyone in the band. With how the tones are you really have to listen more to the playing style of a solo and be able to identify it with whoever is playing, which is honestly tricky because most bands don't have three guitars haha
Nice
Really melodic guy!
That lead tone though
Yep.
They included a comment section of every song on the album folder with explenations of the guys about the wring process amright?
He was a keyboard tech when he was working for Dream Theater. And I'm pretty sure only Petrucci wrote the solo, not both of them.
this guy is epic, hes a robot
You write the following on all of the Periphery album covers: "Misha did not write everything on here, the other guys did some stuff too."
Hey guys how does jake make those solos sound so fusion. what mode is that. sounds like a dorian with some chromatics minus some pentatonic notes. I NEED TO KNOW XD
Yeah I know you've worked with him from a production/writing side, but I was getting at you two actually playing together in some type of project. Would melt faces.
What show is this in the very beginning? Is there anymore footage of this?
Your fretboard is so shiny :)
Per Nelson. Ola and keith merrow have done a vid with him
Jake is the best Guitarist in this band
Other than crediting him in interviews and tutorials etc where credit is due, there isn't really a lot you can do. People on the internet see you as the face of Periphery because you are the most prominent on the internet out of the band. But that is still a good thing!
Ah, Mr. Mansoor. It is pleasure to speak with you. As a typical TH-camr, I know all the problems and none of the solutions. I'm not saying its your fault or you try to take all credit. I think its more of a result of how the general public perceives the creative process in the band because of how it was started, the general creative drive behind the band, your popularity and so on. The only logical solution here is for you to have a showdown between the guitarists in Periphery...to the death.
That's why he's the lead guitarist. Live he plays more solos than anyone else.
I do believe a Nolly bass solo already exists on Erised :P
Misha, dude, PLEASE tell me what job Tosin was doing before AAL, how does he afford all these badass guitars.
whatever happened to the misha interview that theyre supposed to post??
LOL your responses are so funny
"What would Adam D. and Joel do..." Greatest advice you could give! XD
Misha is probably more of the guy who writes all of the heavier djenting riffs. You can totally hear the resemblence on his bulb recordings.
what bridge pickup is that a liquifire?
Man, the intro is so S.I.C.K.!
Can anybody share any sort of link/ video to that concert..?
Which is the song at the intro..?
Why would you post that on a video where Jake is SPECIFICALLY the one being showcased for HIS solo that HE composed?
yeah thats correct
It looks like an RGA Prestige. Is that correct?
Well, Misha DID make almost all of Peripherys riffs and songs, so it's not weird that he gets a lot of credit, but I don't think that Periphery would be where they are today without all the other guys either... But it does seem like the other guys get to make more and more of Peripherys music too, wich can be really interesting, as long as you keep the good old Periphery sound! :D
What's the song playing at the beginning?
how do you spell the guitarist's name he mentions? it sounds like "pera nelson" but searching that doesn't bring up anything.
He loves Dimebag? Now he's my favorite member of Periphery.
awesome tone, what is he using?
Axe-Fx
You, (or whoever you want), could make videos or a database of some sorts to give credit to who wrote what, or use some sort of social media to give credit to the most popular riffs.
what's the intro song?
I'm a drummer and I wish still played guitar :(
Playing this on 0.5x sounds kinda funny when he's talking "drunk" just like the lick he played. Like seriously.!!
nolly sounds cajun for gnarly !!
Will this be released in 2013?
The reflections on his fretboard creeps me out.
i want to hug you
What tuning is he in?
What's the name of the song at the intro to this video?
+Harry Morris Facepalm Mute
Thank u kindly :)
what tuning is this?
Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry.
what does that mean?
Well, not that this has anything to do with Periphery, but I have to ask: Have you ever considered a side project with Tosin?
5:29 - 5:36
that's pretty crazy man.,,
derp to the Wes Hauch comment.... duh dude, you could also have said "Even Guthrie Goven wrote one of the solos on Periphery II." or "Even John Petrucci wrote one of the solos on Periphery II."
I think everybody gives credit to Misha in all Periphery's guitar work. Periphery is not "Misha Mansoor and other 5 guys" like everybody thinks. Have you checked Jake's or Mark's clinics in BandHappy? They are freakin' awesome guitar players.
People, please stop giving all credit just to Misha and check this other two guitar freaks! (Jake and Mark).
Haha... It's weird, I have so much more respect now for Jake Bowen now I know he's such a fan of Dimebag's work...
Or just like each write a sick riff or solo or something. That would work too.
What ibanez prestige Is that?
2010-2012 Ibanez RGA420Z Prestige, the color is called Devil's Shadow. He obviously swapped the P.U's to Crunch Labs and Liquid Fire from the stock IBZ P.U's
The guys in Periphery say that Nolly is the best guitarist in the band
I don't really care who is better than who, they have just said Nolly had the best technique.
what is a pearl nelson?
Yes. Continue to use live drums instead of a drum machine, unprocessed vocals rather than pitch-corrected vocals, and acoustically-recorded guitar amps rather than dry, direct guitar signals with processing modules providing all the tone.
I loved Periphery 1, but Periphery 2 is a noticeable step up in terms of both tone and musicality. The musicality might not have a lot to do with the recording techniques, but the tonal improvement can't be just a coincidence, in my opinion.
Periphery FTW.
That Ibanez! What model?
2010-2012 Ibanez RGA420Z Prestige, the color is called Devil's Shadow. He obviously swapped the P.U's to Crunch Labs and Liquid Fire from the stock IBZ P.U's
What is the point for the floyd rose...
give nolly a quick bass solo in one of the songs
he has sponsors man
2und2sind4's comment is best ever...What's a Pearl Nelson? Too funny!
Per Nilsson is the guitarist of Scar Symmetry
