The more I listen to this podcast the more Toronto slang I understand. So between that and the info on how the meta is shaping up I enjoy these educational episodes.
This is the greatest compliment we could ever have dreamed of - Aneil
Fantastic as always. Aneil is a natural born podcaster you have me cracking up every episode
Great podcast as always! I put Ciaran in my friends worlds draft. Please do well so i can mock my friends and buy 4 Big Mac Combos. You can do it Ciaran i believe in you! 💪
I appreciate the faith you put into me. I will do my best to improve next year! Sorry I didn't win you your draft :( - Ciaran
My hot take is that Miraidon EX will take it all at Worlds. Dodge your Charizard matchups, and hope that all the Lugias make it to Day 2.
Agree. If built right and played well, it's a sleeper pick for sure
Not a bad shout tbh… Zard is down, might be time to strike 🙂↔️ - Aneil
Raging Bolt is tough as well
@@ChazBlanksnot really everything can be ohkoed in the bolt matchup and in general you can attack first unless bolt gets good combos turn 1
Been binge watching a lot of the previous podcast after I found out about it, loving the vibe you guys give, really enjoying listening to the shows! Especially the rando football themed starts haha!
I will say just do agree that Mochi Zard is quite slept on, it seems like it has answers to deal with its worse matchups.
Much appreciated my man, always nice to see a familiar name in the comments! Our show is all about that, mixing valuable, educational info with a chill "just the boys at a bar" vibe. Absolutely though to your Zard point, that deck is kind of terrifying if they set up.... - Aneil
If I was going to worlds, I would definitely be playing Gardevoir. With the right list, it's even or favored into every relevant deck, and it has a ton of outplay potential when compared to a deck like Lugia or Regidrago. I think that Gardevoir should definitely play double turo to respect stall at this point, however. Jamming Tower could definitely be a strong inclusion as well to turn off handheld fan in lax as well as TM:Devo and Bravery Charm in mirror. Playing a copy or 2 of Devo along with double munkidori also seems necessary for the charizard and mirror matchups. I also really like Gallade; I think it's the most slept on card in the deck right now. It's a very strong attacker into mirror, raging bolt, lost box, and regidrago, and it can find supporters like boss on key turns. Possibly the most important thing it does, however, is that it allows you to boost Kirlia's hitpoints while putting a single prize stage 2 into play that still gives some form of draw power. This is mostly relevant against Regidrago's Dragapult spam, especially after they've pinged a kirlia with pult, as well as against devo in mirror. It can also come into play agaisnt Dusknoir in Zard. In all, Gallade seems like a really strong option that most players won't expect, and it can really help against the most relevant matchups in the format.
I rock with the Gallade comment, and I really do think Gardevoir is in the perfect spot right now. Might have leaked too much, but it almost feels too good not to play…. - Aneil
I've done some more testing of Gardevoir vs. Regidrago, and I've found that Klefki is very strong in the matchup. Often, you can buy yourself one or more turns in the beginning, especially when you gust something without energy on it. It's actually pretty funny how easy it is to brick Drago with Klefki. Usually, they get out of it and attach some energy, but you can reestablish the lock next turn and usually they have no counterplay. It's possible to come back from a turn 2 Kyurem wiping all three Kirlia by sticking Klefki and using TM:Evo. I've found that using Kyurem early in the matchup is actually a terrible play that usually results in Regidrago losing all of its energy on board or getting stuck with no attack for one or more turns. I honestly think that Klefki changes the matchup from 40/60 (slightly better if you have Mimikyu) to 70/30 or even better. Play Klefki!
Also, I'm not sure if Drifloon is worth it in Gardevoir. You don't ever need it into Regidrago; Scream Tail + charm is enough, and Devo covers Zard, Mirror, and Pult (assisted by the Bravery Charm + Scream Tail). I would run 1 Charm 1 Devo (or maybe 2 devo if I had the space).
Because of all of this, I honestly think that Gardevoir is the BDIF. I kind of agree with the meta manipulation theory: I think a bunch more people than expected will show up at Worlds with Gardy, so I would make sure to have a strong mirror as well. I'd play Gallade and triple dark, and I'd probably cut hisuian heavy ball and drifloon for a third munkidori and a second devo. A second Flutter Mane would also be super strong, and is probably necessary without heavy ball. Maybe you could cut bravery charm for it? I'm not completely sure. Basically, my philosophy when building Gardevoir is that establishing double munkidori is the most powerful thing you can do in this format, so I want to have a list that can set that up as effectively as possible and take the greatest advantage of it.
If you're curious, here's my current list:
Pokemon (19)
2 Gardevoir ex
1 Gallade
4 Kirlia
4 Ralts
1 Manaphy
3 Munkidori
1 Scream Tail
2 Flutter Mane
1 Klefki
Energy (10)
7 Basic Psychic Energy
3 Basic Darkness Energy
Trainers (31)
4 Arven
4 Iono
2 Professor Turo’s Scenario
1 Boss’s Orders
4 Buddy-Buddy Poffin
2 Ultra Ball
2 Super Rod
2 Counter Catcher
2 Earthen Vessel
1 Hyper Aroma
1 Nest Ball
1 Enhanced Hammer
1 Bravery Charm
1 Technical Machine: Devolution
1 Technical Machine: Evolution
2 Artazon
You could definitely cut the Bravery Charm for an Ultra Ball. When the deck sets up, it wins 95% of games, and sometimes finding Gardevoir, Gallade, Flutter Mane, or Munkidori can be challenging. Ultra Ball can also bail you out of a poor opening hand.
41:10 Iron Thorns only auto wins lugia if you play the super linear meta list. My lugia list auto wins that matchup, and the difference is one cancelling cologne. Cologne also helps a bunch of other situations, so it’s not just a tech for thorns. Use it against manaphy to hit the bench with blue ogerpon, to stop mimikyu, snorlax, fluttrmane, etc. My item search option is Arven (I also run one vitality band so lugia can hit 230, which is underplayed), but irida makes sense too considering we run two important water types. The truth is, the thorns deck is pure trash, with no prospects of beating you if you break their lock for just one turn. Any lugia player losing to that only has their list to blame.
100% agree on the regidrago hot take. When I first picked it up I thought it was going to be the power hour!! Quickly(and painfully) learned it requires a lot more self control than the other decks around.
It’s easy to play on a basic level but I have seen so many players who go about it erratically with little regard to resources, the mirror is actually skillful to an extent - Aneil
Kyurem isn't the issue with lost box, the issue is the amount of things we have to check, so lost zone decisions are much harder, alot of the times we need alot of our resources. In summary drawing perfectly is needed alot more.
Of course, and at worlds you can’t take ties so 🤷♂️ - Aneil
I totally get Ciaran, I hate humanoid pokemons and Cinderace is one of the worst(Jynx as well since you mentioned it), it's definitely not that popular as Aneil thinks because I heard a lot of similar comments🙃
Pokemon did fantasy for naic and worlds, if they do it in the future it would be cool to go over fantasy picks on the podcast
It would be really cool to do Pokemon fantasy for the whole year, but it would be tough since not every player goes to a similar amount of events. Maybe Pokemon could make fantasy with the cards for the whole season! - Ciaran
dusclops allows you to 1 shot a zard with cursed bomb and lost impact
That's a pretty good combo. I wonder if you can afford to give up a prize though. - Ciaran
@@ShiftGearPodcast let zard take the first 2 prizes self ko dusclops roxanne and then ko the zard.
I play Snorlax but drink milk out of a carton like a man. I agree Zard can be best if it fits both the Duskull line and Pecharunt/Mochi line.
Snorlax + Milk is a tough one 😔 - Aneil
if ciaran doesn’t rate cinderace because it plays soccer, does he not rate mewtwo because it can ball up lebron on the court?
Mewtwo just happens to be a hooper, it isn't in his dna/design. Mewtwo unironically has that aura, I'm sure he would body every sport! - Ciaran
Played neutralization zone garde to day 2 doom tour. Great against drago and zard. Definitely want aroma against Lugia or mirror though.
That one thing I highly disagree with. Drago is one the most easiest stright forward decks I have ever tested more than chairzard.
Sure it’s straight forward to play at a basic level. I can tell you from experience that there are right ways to play the deck and most people who just pick it up simply don’t know how. You’ll see seasoned Drago players constantly winning mirrors, there are lines that without experience, you simply just won’t see - Aneil
@ShiftGearPodcast I mean I have experience as well and play competitive as well the lines for any match up are pretty easy to read. To be fair I come from a yugioh completive background so that probably helps alot.
What’s rad zard doing to mimiku? 10:35 you have to commit 5 energy’s Snorlax just gusts up drago or oger and stall it
Mimikyu isn’t exclusive to stall only? In Pidgeot control (prize taking) or Gardevoir they both have opportunities to employ Mimikyu late game - Aneil
Iron thorns don’t auto win when lugia plays flutter mane
It seems like most Lugia lists I've looked at don't play Flutter Mane. But yes, that makes the matchup pretty much free for Lugia. Don't know if its is worth it though. - Ciaran

They’re in production 😌 - Aneil
Is dragapult that dead it didn't even get a mention as it's own deck
I wouldn’t say it’s that dead, it still performs from time to time but it’s definitely down from where it was on release - Aneil
I honestly just forgot to mention it. I actually think it is in a pretty decent spot right now. Most Drago decks don't have a way to one shot it and it is positive into Zard. - Ciaran
@@ShiftGearPodcast I am so glad as I'm getting back into the game with Pult Pidgeot with a Dusknoir package.
@@ProphecyPhraseso just like every other pult player
@cj55555c "Every other Pult player" There are some players who are playing Dragapult with Xatu, so that comment is false right out of the gate. Do you have anything meaningful to add to this conversation, or are you going to be a troll for no actual reason?
I assume hes like egyptian-mexican
Farah is an arabic word
I am part Arab, but not Egyptian. Also I'm 0% Hispanic, but a lot of people always say I look Mexican haha - Ciaran
@@ShiftGearPodcast haha then I go to my og guess no one other than Irish people spell ciaran like that so Arab Irish was what I've always thought
Just didn't know what country cuz Farah is somewhat common I think
My second guess was syrian
Doom world tour was bo3
starting to dislike playing against drago, it is very stronk
It is indeed, scarily so
Ciaran knows how to talk spanish? 😮
Very poorly. I used to be able to speak well when I was a kid, but when I moved to Canada I stopped practicing. Getting back to fluent is something I want to do someday! - Ciaran
