I moved out of the Front Range into the middle of the southern Rockies back in 2016. I was initially worried whether I would need to replace my 2008 Commander for another Wrangler. Silly Man! There's no place that I am afraid to go up here in my Commander. Even Hwy 69 in the middle of a full on blizzard ( had to a few times since the cities are all far away now ) Almost 200K now and still running like a top ( kept those maint. up ;0)
Tbh if a commander had solid axles it'd basically be an xj. Maintains a classic jeep look. I personally like them. They're disliked among a lot of the jeep community and idk why. They look like jeeps!! All they need is solid axles!
nice vid! So many people dont realize how capable the commander limited's are! Locked front rear and center diffs are awesome! Add 330+hp and your good to go!
The Suburban is a 4x4 that is meant for snow, dirt roads and other slippery on-road conditions. The Jeep is meant for Offroad conditions. There is a big difference.
Dude.. Im sorry but a 4x4 is way more offroad capable than an awd. Going into any offroad situation with 4x4 engaged can be a risky one. Experienced offroaders know that a high amount of situations are better off entered in rwd, and if you start slowing down, you engage 4x4. In fact youll notice that the high majority of awd vehicles are actually not meant for offroad at all. Just about any jeep truly intended for off road is a 4x4. Most of the time in awd only 2 or 3 wheels are engaged anyway, the reasons the suburban had a harder time getting up/down 1. Heavier overall, suspension, drivetrain, motor, chassis, the body is pure steel 2.its much longer 3. Its torquier, but with all the excess weight of a heavy suv going up a steep hill its getting robbed of about 50 percent power. Basically all im saying is that the jeep is originally intended for on road purpose, and all the things you named off that the 4x4 was for is more for awd.
You do realize that the Jeep is a true 4x4 and not just awd right? Piece of It has front and rear lockers, the suburban does not so it's not a true 4x4 unless you install lockers yourself (mine had a rear locker but a front LS). I owned a 91 suburban with 35's and a 6" lift, that was built for Offroad use. I had to make it capable for off road use. I own a HEMI Jeep. It drives All 4 wheels, on the ground or not. The suburban with the stock drive train drives 2 wheels, thats it, and if 1 or 2 come off the ground, your done. The Jeep is dramatically more capable offroad and has more power and torque by far. Bone stock the Jeep can go almost anywhere my Suburban went more comfortably with better mileage.
Ok, so the Commander in this has the Hemi.. Therefor it has the Quadra drive system.. I have the 4.7 & only the QT2 system which still does pretty darn good.
Had a 96 burb k1500 open rear diff with 305/70/16 kumho ats. Never got stuck but new what it could do and couldn't do. Could've made that climb in 4hi. Currently have a 99 land cruiser 100... don't know what it won't do haven't found a limit yet... locking diff is a game changer no doubt.
Ill still take my 96 Burb any day. Good old Vortec V8 has a very high reliability factor. The Commander has a LOT more tech under its hood too. Its kind if like apples and oranges.
Suburbans have a much longer wheel base, and are heavier and wider than the Commander. This is where a lot of the issues come in trying to wheel long wheel based vehicles, not that they're not capable they just get hung up on stuff that the smaller vehicles don't. Those old suburbans when setup properly would go anywhere, they were easy to work on, heck you could open the hood on the older ones and literally crawl up in the engine bay and work on them.
Why do so many people talk about there modified Suburbans vs a stock jeep heck at least commend jeep for keeping their suv's offroad worthy gm turned the tahoe and suburban into family or independent woman mobiles
when was the suburban or tahoe (only introduced as this body style in the early 90s) EVER AN OFFROAD VEHICLE?? they were introduced in the 30s as people movers, continued to be people movers thought the 2014 models. go figure they turned their people mover into a family car
TheDbrain G80 or Gov loo is a poor excuse for a locker .I have one on my Duramax and hate it. I'd take a Detroit locker or Torsen any day of the week over it.
Quadradrive 2 (at least these years Commanders and Grand Cherokees) have e-lockers front and rear muck like a Rubicon package Wrangler. You just can't select them manually, the computer activates them automatically.
Yeah, apples vs. oranges here. Too many variables, including the aforementioned traction control, as well as the nut behind the wheel. You can go a bit further and test a Wrangler vs. a Peterbilt on the hill. I bet some folks will crow about the Jeep's superiority there, too... different critter, is all. I've seen some 'burbs do some interestingly capable stuff on the trail, by the way.
the burban's tires looked like worn out shoes. Shitty differential too. One wheel spinning is garbage. The Commander has locking diffs. It's not even in the same league.
Yeah. The jeep is ful of nice tech and modern stuff that puts it over the suburban. that doesnt mean the burb is bad. once they figured out how to get it over the hill the burb made it no problem, but the commander was composed as hell, very impressive. and Jacob, that suburban is WAY long, even compared to the bigass jeep, so obviously its going to lift less. and your argument is a fail anyways, since jeep did the same job with 3 tires much of the way ;)
I have a 95 suburban with a total of 5 inch's of lift (3 suspension, 2 body) and 1 1/2 inch spacers on each wheel. Honestly its how the driver handles the hill, because I've had mine up some way bigger climbs than this out in Kentucky. Muddier too. The jeep has the upper hand already because its lighter, but don't think that burbans are bad off road trucks either. They are very capable if a good driver is behind the wheel and its set up right.
Same vehicle as the commander in the video just the smaller engine, it'll do the same stuff the ones with the V8's can do, just slower. The Commanders with quadra-drive just had the advantage of having limited slip front and rear differentials that the 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 didn't have...I believe quadra-drive was an option on the 4.7L V8 but not very common, course with some wrenching you could always swap that stuff over into either the 3.7L or 4.7L equipped Commanders.
kawirider01 not really a straight line pull putting both frame designs in...tension... would not pull the Jeep un-frame apart you have a misconception of how hard it is to rip apart a un .
They are similar in weight a commander is 4500 and a burban is 4600. look closely at the burbans front wheels . they dont spin at all. the jeep axels were fully locked and spinning!
Don't forget the Suburban is about twice as long as the Commander LOL. That's one of the biggest issues of trying to wheel a full size truck, the dang long wheel base they get hung up easier and lose traction easier.
...its a C1500 2WD vs a 4WD Jeep. As far as Im concerned if the Burb can do the same things without 4WD the Suburban wins. EDIT: NVM I see its got 4x4 in other vids. I swear i read C1500 on the side not K1500 though. It also doesnt have the typical ground clearance...maybe Im used to seeing the K2500 Burbs instead.
Thiers a hierarchy of cars. GMC owns Chevy, Pontiac, and a few others. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and others are together and used to be called Plymouth. You can see certain cars look almost identical. Pontiac solstice and Saturn Sky Subaru brz and scion FRS (which was built by subaru and Toyota together.) Etc.
+Badass Bowties no, GM owns GMC, Chevy, Buick, oldsmobile, cadillac, and pontiac. And before the Yukon XL was called the Yukon XL, they were suburbans for the person that asked
Gregory W yes it does. toyota/scion engineered the FRS , BRZ car. Subaru built the drivetrain .engine trans. go to toyota, open hood on a Toyota FRS. top of the motor, and all over the parts. genuine subaru. your welcome.
GMC/Chevrolet, same company...they used the Suburban name interchangeably back then, not sure if they do that now or not, I think they use the Yukon Denali name on the GMC versions now.
People buy Toyota and Nissan for their name plates thinking of reliability, both of which have slipped quite a bit in recent years unfortunately now its quantity over quality as are every other automaker out there.
lets just compare a bus to a go cart next........bring your jeep over to rockaway nj and put it up against my 99 suburban, vortec 350ci 500hp supercharged, well see who can go though deeper mud, climb bigger hills, and do some real offroading. and im not biased about it, ive owned a couple cherokees that would rape that soccer mom suv liberty
Commanders are truly under appreciated.
The Jeep Commander Handles Like a Boss!
I moved out of the Front Range into the middle of the southern Rockies back in 2016. I was initially worried whether I would need to replace my 2008 Commander for another Wrangler. Silly Man! 06 Commander owner here and this is just what they do! The Jeep Commander is a BEAST! GODSPEED
Tbh if a commander had solid axles it'd basically be an xj. Maintains a classic jeep look. I personally like them. They're disliked among a lot of the jeep community and idk why. They look like jeeps!! All they need is solid axles!
Right. Looks to me like a Cherokee and a 4door wrangler had a baby. Idk what's not to like
Suburbans should never leave the groceries store parking lot
these damn jeeps make me smile!
That's one cool looking Jeep
I had a 2007 Commander and it was a beast! In terms of off road, the only thing that could compete was the Wrangler. Period.
Robert Cowan jeep xj will
Love my '99 xj!
Robert Cowan apparently you’ve never heard of the land cruiser, Land Rover, ETC
Jeep's own discovery, loved it.
COMMANDERS ARE SICK
nice vid! So many people dont realize how capable the commander limited's are! Locked front rear and center diffs are awesome! Add 330+hp and your good to go!

My bad, i didnt even realize the commander was true 4x4 until i looked it up yesterday. For some reason i thought it was an awd :/ not sure why.
The Z71 Tahoe is great off road. Its hard to believe that Suburban is a 4x4...
+James Feragola the suburban had more torque
I LOVE my commander. The 4x4 system is amazing, I can go where other people can't 90 percent of the time.
Ok, so the Commander in this has the Hemi.. Therefor it has the Quadra drive system.. I have the 4.7 & only the QT2 system which still does pretty darn good.

Even a base line commander would have beat the burb.
Wow, big difference, Jeep made it like nothing- I have a 96 ZJ 5.2 with limited slip and so far never been stuck in the snow
Ill still take my 96 Burb any day. Good old Vortec V8 has a very high reliability factor. The Commander has a LOT more tech under its hood too. Its kind if like apples and oranges.

A limited slip g80 comes stock on some burbans. And would have performed close to the commander
TheDbrain G80 or Gov loo is a poor excuse for a locker .I have one on my Duramax and hate it. I'd take a Detroit locker or Torsen any day of the week over it.
Leave it to a Jeep. Now if only QTII worked as well as QDII
Geez , the commander made that look easy...is quadra drive 2 work like locker's?
Quadradrive 2 (at least these years Commanders and Grand Cherokees) have e-lockers front and rear muck like a Rubicon package Wrangler. You just can't select them manually, the computer activates them automatically.
Did this commander have a lift or was it stock....man I want one so bad
I believe it had a lift of 2, maybe 3 inches.
They do look great. Whish they hadn't discontinued them.
And I really need to get me a commander cuz that commander in the video was basically like hah WHAT HILL
Yeah, apples vs. oranges here. Too many variables, including the aforementioned traction control, as well as the nut behind the wheel. I'd still go with the suburban got to love them
The front end on the burb wasn't pulling...Jus saying... :)
Yea, it made it look like it wasn't 4wd
Looked like that to me as well, wonder if it wasn't engaging.
Commander does it with ease.
Hi all, I have a Jeep Commander 2009
Can anyone tell me what the trains is?
QT or QD and what is the best of these two?
My commanders fucking awesome
heck yeah commander rules >:D
It is exactly like my Commander!
@daltonwells1 no lockers, it's traction control
suburban needs 3 inches of lift atleast, some 33s or 35s lockers front and rear and itd be set
Jeep is more capable, but the Suburban has a lovely sounding engine
That's a four-wheeler. You need a suburban that's a four wheeler drive. LOL
Hello. I have a jeep commander 2007 Sport 3.7 4x4. My question is. What type of transmission i have QD, QD1 or what"
Yeah. The jeep is ful of nice tech and modern stuff that puts it over the suburban. that doesnt mean the burb is bad. once they figured out how to get it over the hill the burb made it no problem, but the commander was composed as hell, very impressive. and Jacob, that suburban is WAY long, even compared to the bigass jeep, so obviously its going to lift less. and your argument is a fail anyways, since jeep did the same job with 3 tires much of the way ;)
Making it look easy
it's on 2in lift and 32in tires
I have a 95 suburban with a total of 5 inch's of lift (3 suspension, 2 body) and 1 1/2 inch spacers on each wheel. Honestly its how the driver handles the hill, because I've had mine up some way bigger climbs than this out in Kentucky. Muddier too. Is that commander stock height? looks a little taller than mine.
Jeep doing jeep things
I lol's watching Suburban go off-roading
Can my 2007 Jeep Commander 3.7 v6 sport 4x4 do this? And could it handle good in big amounts of snow?
No
Yea, it has much less horsepower but still has a good suspension system and a reliable 4x4
Stock suspension on both?
you mean like the speed bump that is your youtube channel?
the suburban is capable of pulling that jeep in half
kawirider01 not really a straight line pull putting both frame designs in...tension... would not pull the Jeep un-frame apart you have a misconception of how hard it is to rip apart a un .
Jeep wins for 2 reasons... 1) it's lighter and 2) it looks like it had better tired than the suburban.
3) automatic all four locking hubs (If its the QD2 powertrain) 4) HEMI POWA
Qd2 womping on open diffs
JEEP. .... THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE. #JEEPSTER
Commander for the win
Guy in the suburban needs to use more gas.
Quadra Drive 2
Suburban “rut roh”
Jeep “meh”
I could have made that
in my neighbors friends cousins
prius
Jeep wins again. Now if they could work on that gas mileage o_O*
People don't realized that the suburban weighs like 5,800 pounds while a dumb hero weighs 3500 pounds
They are similar in weight a commander is 4500 and a burban is 4600. look closely at the burbans front wheels . they dont spin at all. the jeep axels were fully locked and spinning!

Stock suburban against a Jeep with lockers?? at least get a sub with lockers...
Commanders dont have lockers..
No brainer who one the jeep cause the surburban was not made for off roadind and its almost double the jeeps link
Because Jeep.
@coffeestatus12 I'd rather drive a beetle lol
i thought suburbans were chevy
Thiers a hierarchy of cars. GMC owns Chevy, Pontiac, and a few others. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and others are together and used to be called Plymouth.

Pontiac solstice and Saturn Sky
Subaru brz and scion FRS (which was built by subaru and Toyota together.)

before gmc decided to change the "suburban" name to yukon xl they used suburban for chevy and gmc.
+Badass Bowties no, GM owns GMC, Chevy, Buick, oldsmobile, cadillac, and pontiac. And before the Yukon XL was called the Yukon XL, they were suburbans for the person that asked

i didnt see the suburban lift a tire. suburban for the win.
Jacob Lauritzen didn't get far enough up the hill the second the tire got light it list traction and stopped...thats a fail SON !
Is a jeep
How about.... GET OUT OF THE FKN WAY!
Keep your Chevy’s on asphalt kids. They’re not real trucks.
lol
My question is, why do Toyota and Nissan outsell the best 4x4's ever built??, people are truly STUPID.
People buy Toyota and Nissan for their name plates thinking of reliability, both of which have slipped quite a bit in recent years unfortunately now its quantity over quality as are every other automaker out there.
that's cheap the jeep had locking hubs on it I saw the tires move even with eachother
It has LSD front and rear from the factory.
lets just compare a bus to a go cart next........bring your jeep over to rockaway nj and put it up against my 99 suburban, vortec 350ci 500hp supercharged, well see who can go though deeper mud, climb bigger hills, and do some real offroading. and im not biased about it, ive owned a couple cherokees that would rape that soccer mom suv liberty
