I've had basset hounds for forty years. I completely agree with everything you say, except for one major thing, a basset hound will make you burst out laughing every single day. They are comical, fun and I would never own any other breed. ❤❤❤

I've had Bassets hounds for over 60 years, both as a child and an adult. I agree with much of what you have said - but I have had overe 20 Basset hounds and never had one drool, or have issues with housebreaking. I do suggest a doggy door with a fenced yard. They are quite strong and definitely stubborn. I have also had many Bassets develop fatty lipomas - benign, but they can grow quite large. They are smelly, noisy, and willful - and the funniest, most adorable dogs ever. I encourage people to check with Basset Rescues if they are looking for a Basset - I have adopted many older Bassets and given them the best few years of their lives. Bassets rule~

Four weeks ago I got a Basset hound from a animal rescue organization in Germany. She came from Russia and had been used for breeding. Then her owner died. The children abandoned her at a bus station. Russian animal rescuers got hold of her and sent her to Germany. Her jaws were infected so badly she had to have an operation and 8 teeth were pulled out. She is the cutest and adorable dog you could ever imagine. Ok… grooming is one thing but she likes every animal and all the people we ever met on our walks. She never peed or pood in my apartment. She enjoys long walks and by now her muscles have been trained enough to be walking five times a day at least for half an hour. She is my Bonnie, my sweetheart and I couldn‘t imagine spending one more day without her.

I’m on my fourth basset,they drool , are stinky , are stubborn,steal food, ear cleaning, etc but they are the best pet I’ve every had . They are sweet, loyal, gentle, funny, beautiful, and I can not live without one 😊

I had two bassets barny and Sheila. They were the best friends I ever had. What beautiful dogs they were. When I lost them both I never got over them I still think of them today !
So sorry! I lost my 13 year Bassett last year. I loved him more than my husband, kids and grandkids. Isn’t that terrible! Ha! But it’s the truth. Think I’m ready for another one. Been in a deep grief since last year. I need some Bassett love!

I got 2 bassets and my fiancé and I want a 3rd. Our boys are so sweet and goofy. We give them good lives. They’re exercise and play a lot and they are happy and loved. Get yourself one it changed my life for the better
From 50 years ago, my basset loved my neighbor’s gardenia bushes, which were right up against the fence. He’d go lean on the fence, stick his nose through into the flowers and inhale deeply. Then he’d close his eyes and thump his tail in ecstasy. I recommend buying flowers for your basset, folks, try gardenias first! 💐

I have had several basset hounds throughout my life and while I loved them all dearly, I don't ever recommend owning one (or any pet for that matter). One of the biggest problems with basset hounds that a lot of people don't think about is bloat and GDV surgery. Basset hounds are prone to bloat and sometimes their stomach will twist and if you don't have immediate surgery, it can kill them. Not only is this unbelievable scary, but it can also cost a fortune to fix. When one of my bassets had this surgery, it cost me $7,000. And this dog still only lived to be 4.5 years old. Even though these dogs may seem lovely, think about the cost of maintaining these dogs and also the pain that you will be in when they inevitably die. Take into account that most bassets only live on average between 8-12 and that's if you're lucky. I know another guy who had basset hounds all his life and all of them died before reaching 10 years old.
Baskets are the best. They understand whatever you are going thru. When my family members died, I would cry and my basset would come running and put her head in my lap and look up at me and give her loud cry, too. Then I didn't want her to be sad, so I'd stop and love on her. Baskets are such great COMFORT! They understand you and are such blessings.

Bassets (not Baskets)
1. Noisy (love to bark and howl). 2. Nose-driven 3. Stinky 4. Fragile health (especially in older dogs). But we love them, because they are so special dogs. Even persons who are cold to dogs in general, cant stop smiling when seeing this long-eared miracle

We love our Bassett. And yes... all these are issues. She is so cuddly, affectionate and very very smart. She's my first dog, but my husband grew up with Basetts.
Basset Hounds are worth dealing with their “issues”. 😊

It took us a year to get our basset hound. He's 10 and half weeks old and we got him from an amazing breeder who answered every question I had with full knowledge of what she was talking about. Right down to making sure we vitamins for him and stairs for when he was allowed to be on the couch. We have found that Copper (our basset) definitely requires more repetition compared to other breeds I've had for training but he has such a high food drive that his attention to me is amazing. So far in 2 weeks he has mastered sit, come when called, and heel. We are still working on down and stay.

Great video, I totally agree with everything you said. Bassets are the only breed I want but they have their challenges. I encourage everyone to consider adopting a Basset who needs a good home, if they think the breed is a good fit for them.

YES! I have always rescued, except for once when I was young, and I regretted not having the time and patience needed. Once you know you are ready, rescues are the natural way to go. 😊💝
I was always obsessed with basset hounds and finally got a puppy last year. Her name is Bailey and I love her but she definitely has most of the things you mentioned. Especially the shedding and stubbornness. Your Rosie is adorable.

She is the exact same coloring as pattern as my Loli. Stubborn should be the #1 reason but love conquers all. She is such a sweetheart. I rescued her from an abusive situation and needs surgery to get a tissue mass removed. The vet says because of the type of mass it is it is not cancerous but still needs to be removed. Rosi looks like a real sweetie.
Wow so far the first three wasn't my experience with my Bassett Tanner. He was low to medium shed thru the year and he was not a drooler thank you Lord for that. He was my best house trained dog and no eye boogers. He was 16 when he passed and the best dog I've ever had.

When i was a child i expected every Christmas to have a puppy like this, it never happend. With the years i started to have other hunting dogs, i am not a hunter, i just love the character of these dogs, Lab, Teckels, or adopted mixed of Griffons from Shelters, or a Breton puppy rescued from the streets. But i never had forgotten my absolutely love about Bassethounds, the other breed i allways had loved are the Bloodhounds, but they are to strong for me. So the next dog i will have is a Bassethound, or maybe two, so they can play together and be always in company. I know the care and patience i need to have, the control about food, the problems with steps or the sofa-jump, the exercise they need, the character they have but i am a "loving captain" and i know how to deal with stubbornness because i can be it, too, nicely but in a German style (i am half german 😏). So i think i am prepared to be a owner of a couple of this wonderful breed. What do you think ?

We’ve had basset hounds for years. Love them. They’re so mellow, but stubborn. These dogs take patience, but are so funny, animated and loving, loyal. They love family and are devoted to it. They follow their noses, so a fenced in yard is a requirement. We love the breed.

I have a 4 year old Bassett Hound. Sweetest breed ever. He sheds little because I brush him daily. Ears and eyes are issues but I keep baby wipes handy. My Bassett was so easy to housebreaking. They do better with other dogs in the house. They are a pak breed. He learned to go outside by following the other dogs. I want another one! ❤❤❤
Two personal notes regarding bassets: In my experience, living in humid, seaside locations, you need to clean their ears far more often than weekly. Our last dear girl needed her ears cleaned daily to keep them from getting infected, because yeast thrive in humidity. It just became a nightly habit to clean her ears while watching TV. My only other quibble is that our bassets have not been difficult to housebreak. We got our last one from the breeder at 16 weeks old, and she was already flawlessly potty trained. She never had an accident until thirteen years later, when she got so old that she had no control, anymore. The same was true for two bassets before that, too. Yours is a beautiful girl, BTW.

I adore this breed! I had two beagle-bassets (bagles) before getting my first basset, and I'll never go back! Bassets are more chill and less barky than beagles and so adorable! I'm sure you could do a video in the 100 reasons you'd want a basset! Rosie is absolutely beautiful by the way!

We have a bagel. Unfortunately he kept the “bark/bay really loud” thing from the beagle and added all the size and lung power of a basset. Love this dog to death, but the noise it can make.
Another thing to consider is that they hate to be left alone for long. Even if they have another basset, they love their people. So if you cannot commit to a basset being more like a toddler who needs your constant attention, they will be sad and lonely. I've owned 3 basset and can't imagine ever having a different breed, but it is a major commitment, so please consider their needs before you bring one home. 🙏🐕

Many of the things you mentioned about behaviour and health apply to other breeds. All doggies need care. I had read about the basset smell and words couldn’t really explain it until one day it appeared. It’s not unpleasant though. Stubborn and hard to train☑️. Likes chewing things you like and need ☑️. Super affectionate, funny, noisy and other pet friendly☑️☑️☑️. Thank you for a very accurate and enjoyable summary of bassets and their characteristics. 🇵🇹

I can't understand who would Not want a Basset. They are the smartest, kind and best smelling. Basset's are the BEST!!

I've had 4 bassets one at a time. I've never had a problem with house breaking but I had a fenced in area to let him our. I use a chain collar as they can pull hard enough to hurt you hand or arm. After a little time you can just shake it you don't need to pull it.

Unless you have a fenced yard to exercise your Basset, it is the Basset who takes the human for a walk. They have powerful legs and a low center of gravity, and can be stubborn. Our Higgins was generally sweet and good-natured, but a walk was like a tractor pull. A stroll with a mini-bulldozer. And when he got tired, he simply plopped down on the sidewalk and wouldn't move. Fortunately he wasn't large for a Basset, because he had to be carried home.

I guess you're right, but you forget ONE important thing to mention: Baseet Hounds are the best dogs that were ever bred. They are simply outstanding mates and friends. I aqm living with Basset Hounds for nearly twenty years and I won't miss a second I spend with them! If there is a god than Bassets were his present for mankind!!!!!

I agree about the shedding!! I got a brush called a Furminator. It helps. OMG you are so right on everything. It’s all true!!! My Basset pooped on the floor I front of a carpet salesman when he was 7 months old. 🤦♀️ so embarrassed. I had spent so much time potty training him by that point.

I had a basset hound for 11 years and She also had A problem with shedding profusely anyway the way I I helped slow it down was to put Fish oil on top of her kibble Everyday and that Cut down on the shedding by about 50-75%.

Basset hounds are the best dog breed. Just like with everything take the bad in with the good. Nothing nor no one is perfect.
I had a basset hound who I adopted. He was used as a sire by backyard breeder, The state forced her to relinquish her hounds. I agree with you regarding the breeders. She did not feed the basset enough. She was mean and threw things at him. He was afraid of high heels.
So sad, thankfully you rescued him and gave him a loving home.

Mine was hard to train but he was such a gooood boy one of my favorite breeds, my Blue Heeler was easy to train genius level dogs another good breed btw, but my Basset well its about constant repetition with them they dont pay attention and dont want schooling so I acted like it was a fun game and repeated it over and over for a few months til the little guy caught on.

I have a 14 year old and a 3 year old . Plus I have had many in between. If your basset is shedding a lot you have a nutrition problem because they do not shed that much when fed correctly. Best dogs ever as long as you know you are not taking on just another dog.

How High does a fence have to be? Hopefully we will receive a call from our selected breeder one of these days saying that there is a puppy on the way, so we are hopefully looking to doggy proofing the garden soon.

For Rosie a 3 foot high fence would suffice and I’d assume would work for
most other Bassets. From what I’ve seen Bassets are more likely to try and dig under the fence. Thankfully for me Rosie is not a digger. 😊
Yes. Fencing is best if you sink wire around the bottom about 6 inches or so. Some will dig out of soft ground. Especially if there is something they want.

RE: Smell
From my experience , if you keep their ears clean, they don't give off much of a musk. Now, my Libby has had issues under her front arms with fungal infections. This is no doubt due to the loose skin and the difficulty of bathing Bassets under their arms. That said, that takes care of 90% of the odor these dogs produce if you can keep those under control

I have always wanted a Basset Hound. The thing holding me back is the issue with the scent tracking. We recently moved to a property on 3 acres. We do not have a fence, but have a tree boundary. We currently have a 5 year old Husky and she only goes outside when we are out there with her. She has an e-collar too. Have any suggestions on if a Basset Hound would do well at our home or if it would be a struggle to keep him/her around?
This is a tough one for sure. I would talk to some breeders, be honest with your situation, and see what they say. Recently, early one morning, we had a rabbit in our yard which I didn't notice when I let Rosie out. She of course locked on to it right away and ran after it. We have a fenced yard but I didn't want her to hurt the rabbit (she's already killed two birds)! I had to call her twice and raise my voice but she stopped mid chase and came back to me when I called her. She was e-collar trained and I work with her a lot on it. BUT I think most Bassets would have kept going. It's partly training and partly Rosie's personality. We're in the military so we move a lot and even though she is well trained and listens well, we will always get a place with a fenced yard, just in case.
I would not recommend a Basset in a yard without a fence, they tend to follow their noses without noticing their surroundings.
Gotta have a fence. Will get a scent and wander off and get lost or run over.
Normally they don't kill rabbits. They are bred to do a thing called pushing. They scent track behind the rabbit. Rabbits have territories and will return often to the point of origin. So many times by staying behind them, they get them to come back to the human. In a yard is a different story. They will kill and eat almost anything that is small game that they catch. Kind of like cats they will often play with it until death. You want to make sure you never see them in the yard chewing on something unknown. With things like rat killers, if they get a poisoned rat or mouse, it could be an issue.
I have had two basset hounds and there are two things that you did not include on your list that are the big things that I don’t like about the two that I have had: the whining and the degree to which they are food driven. They will steal food the minute your back is turned. You can NEVER leave food unattended or close to the edge of counter tops. Yes, they are flipping cute, but the whining definitely gets to me. And the stubbornness to keep whining until they get what they want (in my house, it is a walk).

I had my Basset Hound for over 12 years until cancer took him and yes they are stubborn and don’t make the mistake of letting them get loose but mine did just fine on his long lead dog run all those years. Basically all the hunting hounds are known to be problematic when it comes to potty training because generations have been kept in hunting kennels not so much house dogs, that’s a more recent thing in the breed’s history and my Beagle I currently have was just as much of a problem to potty train as my Basset Hound was. Overall Basset’s are excellent dogs but require effort and patience to deal with their stubbornness

I had two bassets. Sally and Rocco. Sally died of bone cancer and Rocco died of abdominal cancer. They both lived for 12 years though. The BEST dogs I've ever had. My son was 4 years old when we got Sally and he ALWAYS worried if Sally would live a long time. He'd say that he hoped she'd make it till he graduated from high school. Well, guess what? She did. I never saw my son cry like he did the day she passed. Rocco stuck around another year but he was sad. I would definitely get another basset hound but they are a lot of work and fun. Oh, by the way, my cat loved Sally and Sally loved her. They slept together.

Cancer in dogs, like humans, is a common issue for all dogs. A responsible breeder will inform you of family histories of illness. Insurance is critical today for all new dog owners.
Our neighbors' Basset Hound (Clementine) howled. All night sometimes. Is that typical?
Yes. Bassets love to “talk” and let you know what they want. If they are leaving her outside overnight I’m not surprised she’s howling; she’s probably lonely.
Usually if they are singing there is a reason. It is not something they would just do all night unless an issue.

I like bassets but they are high maintenance. They are a great breed though my favorite breed are dachshunds, another stubborn breed.

You left out that they're great guard dogs. They won't attack like a Doberman or German Shepard may, but they're huge cowards that will definitely let you know a stranger is coming near & sound their sirens of A-roo's

Daily time comitment. Do not get a basset if it will be kenneled all day. And exercise 40 minutes a day minimum. Playtime. if you only have one basset you will be his sole playmate so plan on another 40 minutes to an hour of dedicated playtime.

Yes they smell. Just gave mine a bath today. I have to vacuum every day. You can’t wear black pants either. They sling eye boogers and water drool all over the walls. Mine is 12 and been pretty healthy. Teeth cleanings, a couple surgeries for a cyst he had. He is experiencing hip dysplasia where his back legs don’t bend. Arthritis. Otherwise, they don’t require much. You’d think mine wears a watch with an alarm because he is on time for his routine without fail. Everything this guy said is 100% true, but damn they are funny.

Honestly I love all the diffcult breeds 😂 I have a Boston Terrier and was raised with boxers nothing shedding , drooling or smell wise or prey drive wise bothers me (as long they don’t bring their prey injured in my house to make me find it that always sucks had both boxers and my boston do it)
