To empathize, one has not only to understand the gravity of the issue (of the affected person), but more importantly has to feel also, precisely how he/she feels. Rupali mam is mentioning understanding. For me, smiling and acknowledging someone might not mean understanding the other person, but yet make that person feel comfortable and accepted.
