  • Join our live aboard family as we set off from Stornoway Harbour in the Outer Hebrides (West Coast of Scotland) and sail across the Norwegian sea to the Faroe Islands.
    Along the way we'll experience some rough conditions, beautiful sunrises/sunsets and a visit from a pod of Orca.

    Yes, heaving-to is a very useful manoever. It gives one time to tidy the ship,, cook a meal or make a repair.

    This week, I just missed buying a lovely little Skanner 19 on the hard at Tarbert -eBay- I thought to make her a new gaff and boom, and fit her out simply , to poke around the Hebrides before crossing to Norway, and trying to track down my Great Grandfather's home in Sweden, somewhere above the arctic circle. Likely too arduous for me at 76. But still a nice idea. Never should have sold my Fisher 30. Will never afford another. Life is brief. Growing up I read all the pioneer singled handed cruisers.. most of whom were English, but also French and American. So kerosene (parrafin) lamps and cookers, taff rail logs, and a plath windlass seemed the way to do things. Remarkably viable today, especially when cash is tight, and income zero. Who dreamed of solar power or solid state radar ? (beats living in fear of being run down!) Love the look at the Faroes ! Cheers.

    I only discovered your channel last week. The videos are magnificent - great variety of subjects, marvellous scenery, beautiful filming and editing. I mainly watch sailing videos but love the wildlife and scenery, and some of the snow scenes at Stornaway are beautiful. I cannot understand why you have had relatively few views and "likes" -- the videos deserve far more. I think I have now binge watched all your videos, right back to the diploma one on Mull. Looking forward to seeing the Faroes!

    Reminds me a bit of a six day passage I did from Iceland to Scotland recently - big winds, waves, and whales!

    I wasn't a fan of that awful fish-eye lens anyway. But, good tools are like old friends. Doubly hard on a boat.

    If you can play music, cetaceans will respond by swimming closer.

    I have watched many sailing video's from all around that area, and all the boats are mono hulls. Not one cat, can you tell me why, P.S. I am no sailer.

    Do you anchor during winter? Does it hold? What is the length and beam of the boat? Soooo many questions!

    • @sailing-freespirit
      @sailing-freespirit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, hope you enjoyed this episode. If you watch through some of my other episodes you’ll see that we can anchor in all seasons and weather conditions. Good location, good ground and a good anchor and associated equipment are essential for a good nights sleep when the weather turns for the worse. Free Spirit is a steel, Koopmans 39, (11.70m length, 3.70m beam, 1.7m draft).
