  • Stephanie had orthodontic treatment as a youngster that included the removal of permanent teeth and braces that pulled her remaining teeth back in her face. Years later, she told Dr. Hang that she didn't have enough room in her mouth for her tongue. She also complained of constant headaches and recurring nightmares that convinced her she was choking to death.

Great information. More people need to learn these techniques!

Dr. Hang appears to have the quality in a doctor that is almost always overlooked but so very important: an open mind. You can have the most intelligent doctor in the world, but if he/she isn't open minded to new ideas, to the fact that the "right" people could be wrong, that what he/she previously believed might not be true, then you aren't getting the best treatment possible. This type of doctor is unfortunately a very rare thing.

You are absolutely correct. With someone who is an intense clencher the teeth can slowly, over the years, be pushed back forward. I've seen a four millimeter space open in the upper jaw from such a situation. Sadly, the pain pattern the patient had (and the OSA) persisted until we completely reopened the spaces and regained the tongue space. I've seen many cases where 1-2 mm. of space has been reopened by the tongue.

I'm trying to find out what options are legit when coming to opening spaces, I've seen a few applaiances that are meant to be able to do it.
