    Excellent video! What you did is keeping a safe distance from a very volatile situation!
    I thought the utility pole was going to burn as the flames were licking it big time!
    Back in 2000 their was a major gas leak right at the Morris Plains Parsippany border. Rt10 had to be closed in both directions! Finally the gas company arrived and shut off the gas. The biggest problem for ALL is that the ruptured gas main was in the woods!

      The reason for the big response is, I'd say, because of the risk of a gas explosion. Actually, since the gas was burning, it wasn't that great of a risk.
      BUT, _if_ there was a gas explosion, there could be multiple buildings on fire, and multiple victims in need of attention...

    • @EyeWatchThemAll
      @EyeWatchThemAll 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Also, that area (North Wildwood and Wildwood) has a LOT of wood frame constructed houses, the shops on the boardwalk, plus the boardwalk itself is all wood. The heat from those flames could've easily touched off a multiple dwelling fire.

      Also, wildwood (other than June July and August) is practically empty so they can afford to dispatch a shit load of people.

    • @chunkpowers
      @chunkpowers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      let me give you some insight, you only need between 5% and 15% Gas mixture in the air for and explosion. be glad it was a high pressure main and not a low.At least the high pressure will burn and not explode as easy as a low pressure. Turning the gas is an easy solution but as Sam said , you still have all that gas to burn off first.

  • @BenjaminEsposti
    @BenjaminEsposti 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Excellent video, buddy!
    Looks like they let it burn until the gas could be turned off. That's actually the safest option, because it lets the gas burn off, rather than dissipate in the environment and potentially seep into buildings, where it can result in an explosion.

    • @shaunb9876
      @shaunb9876 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Benjamin Esposti very true mate. It’s also quite hard to put it out with water anyways. We have tested the fire crews quite a few times at our yard for training. Most times they can’t put it out. Dry powder is way more effective. But it has its limits also depending on the size of the fire.

    • @retiredarthritic2083

      the hose didnt pull them off either. Not pretty though. The youngest nation, and as you say an economic powerhouse. During this present admin, bustd over 4 percent growth after 8 years a under 3 percent (no us president went 8 years withoiut hitting 3 percent) ONe year we get to 4. Anyways, love the other countries powerhouse envy. Thanks

      Most of the wires seen near the fire are for telecommunication (TV cable and phone company.) The only electrical lines are high above. There is only one electrical line that is even remotely in jeopardy and it is a 3 phase likely 480v line supplying power to the Dunkin Doughnut building.

We would have 1 or 2 a night during cold spells. I never thought about the bad out come if we didn't work quick. But youtube has shown me how lucky we were. b3j8 the chance of an explosion is very minimal it already ignitited and a unlimited pressurized source all gas release is being burnt off at exit comparable to cooking on a propane grill the danger is present but in the most part contained and controlled the main concern is additional exposures which they looked to be dealing with by cooling the building with the pipe (hose line)

    how many fire fighters does it take to put out a gasfire

    • @PhillipRhodes
      @PhillipRhodes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Strictly speaking, none. The way a fire like this is extinguished is generally by cutting off the flow of gas somewhere upstream. That work is actually done by the utility company. BUT... what the fire department does in a case like this is protect exposures, and prevent the fire from spreading. In some rare situations, the FD may also use water streams to push the fire / heat away from a certain valve or component that the utility company needs to access in order to stop the flow of gas.

    I'd like to say a few things: first, great video Demonracer! You stayed out of the way and safe. Second: those of you who never been to the Jersey shore have to understand that the majority of buildings in any given shore town are wood framed. Just a coupe of years ago, an exposed wire under the boardwalk at Seaside Heights set the whole boardwalk on fire(I believe it was Seaside Heights, but I could be wrong; brain's a bit fuzzy on that point), so I can understand the massive response. Better to have to many than too few.

      Exposure protection.
      The big flame is hot (as you might expect) and will start cooking the surrounding buildings and cars, so they want to be able to hose down a large area.
      On top of that, it's quite difficult to fight a gas fire with water. When they do try to extinguish it, they'll need to hit it with a lot of mist.
      That's not the first priority because the fire is at least getting rid of the gas, which means it can't build up and explode. The downside of letting it burn is that the fire can attack the pipe and make the leak worse.

      anthony john ramsey lol.... as someone who works for a major utility provider in nyc.... sometimes the main valves are paved over .... sometimes these valve box covers are stuck... filled with debris .... and first you have to find the right main valve(s).... because gas can either be on a one way or 2 way feed.... so ... it’s not like just turning the knob on or stove.... and you have situations where the gas can be connected like a 4way tee... and you have to go to 4 different valves and shut them... so like I said .... it’s not that simple.... have a good one

      Not sure on this department set up but in my area we work on a m.a.b.a.s.system mutual aid box alarm system. It gives us the back up and resources needed when we get the job for instance if we show up for report of a structure fire we have 4 other departments on the way but if we have something bigger than originally reported we will call for 2nd alarm which will dispatch further companies to support us in whatever way we need be it back up or response to additional calls while we are tied up

      As per wildwood FD
      “This apparatus allows the fire department to access the eastside of the boardwalk onto the beach for fire, medical and water rescue emergencies.”
      Definitely is a help with minor flooding as well as there are no areas for brush fires like you said but the area does flood regularly thanks for watching!

    Why do many people? What else is burning? How many does it take to turn off a gas main?

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably only takes one person to turn off a gas main, but they have to be from the gas company to do it.
      The gas company likely doesn't keep someone posted to respond to emergencies 24/7, so it takes a while to get someone out there to shut the gas off. Meanwhile all the fire department can do is make sure nothing else catches on fire, which is exactly what they were doing.

    • @tjlovesrachel
      @tjlovesrachel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MihirK007

      Harley James yeah. Let’s see. Gas line blows up and takes couple block? Good thing fire engines are there.
      Gas lines blows up and causes power lines to be downed if it hits an electrical pole? Good thing firemen are there.
      Plus, you can’t just turn off the valve to shut off gas.
