Honestly, as long as you aren’t being required to sell your soul, or, reduce your values for such a trip, it is interesting to see a fuller picture of these countries in a fair & honest light (not an anti-wealthy tirade, if the wealth isn’t based upon corruption; but a view of every economic bracket, and if the country is doing better in expanding the accessibility of poorer class to move up into middle class/ if the govmt is making positive steps in educating more of the children in rural areas (keeping in mind the geography & infrastructure that might pose difficulties that has made it a challenge). Compare a country to itself a generation ago rather than a more developed & geographically stable area that doesn’t have to contend w/ violence, etc.
that's kinda a typical asian mums 'cause like he said, we were taught to be responsible on what/where we use the money and when parents (mostly mums) heard that they were giving this kind of opportunity, that child will always be the one to hesitate and make a decision, mums will just be shouting at you the whole about it. my mum doesn't shout at me though.. lmao
Paul, always appreciated your integrity. You've always been about the content, the substance, even at your goofiest. You don't chase cheap clicks or create ridiculous drama for attention. Your subs and fans are COMMUNITY and you built it slowly and honestly through insanely hard work and well researched, highly educational and entertaining videos. You deserve some nice stuff along the way. In a time of immense disposability your videos will remain a resource for many years to come. :)
Paul shouldn't be judged for taking a free trip lol, but he didn't disclose that vidcon was paid by the government of UAE to be held there. Its fairly well documented the UAE goes out to "influencers" and pays for their trips to abu dhabi in exchange for positive reviews online. I heard a follow up video is in the works, so sounds like Paul is attempting to be fair.
I will never judge you for getting free travel. I also kinda can explain the golfball illusion. It is similar to the Full Moon illusion where the moon looks bigger when it is low on the horizon. Because you have no reference to how big the moon is (and in this case, the golfball), you can't really notice how big something is. However if it is juxtaposed against something smaller, (like clouds or trees, or in this case the fortress you stood on), then you can see how big it really is.
This illusion is also present at the agra fort in India. just the effects are more pronounced due to the Taj Mahal being the building that appears to change its size.
You're getting to do what I wish I could, and that's not only seeing the world but bringing your mother so she can see the world as well. I can't imagine how special it feels to share these experiences, especially knowing the loss you've had to endure. One day I hope to share the world with my own mother and that you were afforded the opportunity is amazing! (I would also mark out and want a picture if I saw you like that person on the flight)
Hi Paul, I think you do not have to explain yourself or justify taking on a great opportunity if it presents itself to you. You have invested a lot of time and effort into your channel over the years so why not enjoy the ‘fruits of your labor’ if it is a legit offer?! Just because you have never had something before, does not mean you have to stay on that level and deny yourself a bit of comfort and luxury here and there forever. Enjoy it! If it is interesting content you are nowhere near to being a sell-out. Happy Holidays! x
It was a legit offer... but you have to admit, that a positive experience does colour your impression of the country (which has not yet been showcased). But Paul's a stand-up guy, so I'd expect he won't let him influence it TOO much. Like other places, UAE has some pretty grim treatment of migrant workers... all that shines, is not gold.

7:39 I'm not the best at explaining this, but you did indeed "discover" an optical illusion. It's kind of like with the moon and how it looks bigger the closer it gets to the horizon: you are able to compare its size with things around it. However, the higher the moon goes into the sky, the "smaller" it becomes, as there is a vast emptiness in space, with no comparable objects around it to reveal its size. Similarly, the golf ball building looks massive when it peaks out of the stone wall that nearly covers it. However, upon moving to the N/E side of Qasr Al Hosn, more of the golf ball building is exposed. This makes the building look smaller by comparison
4:33 it does look like the MBS building,but it’s actually a apartment block! There is a similar thing in Chongqing,China but the reason that the Chinese one is similar to MBS is because of the fact that it was made by the same company unlike the one in the UAE

He was right to be wary though because, generally speaking, there is no such thing as a free ride. Who knows, this may have been the exception but he was definitely right to be wary. Personally, I wouldn't have gone because I find the opulence on display here distasteful but I guess if he's happy to go then go.

Even if you decide not to do a Taiwan episode (though I think you should at least give it a focus episode) it would be great for Taiwan to be highlighted on the channel. After all, there still countries that recognize it officially... and MOST countries unofficially recognize it.

The optical illusion mentioned here reminds me of the Via Niccolo Piccolomini illusion in Rome: the church appears to get smaller as you get closer to it. I imagine the surrounding roads/walls of the fortress are the cause of this effect? Super cool regardless!
