Excellent band, inspirational song, as you said. Really like your analysis on production and arrangements. Freakin’ killed me with the line, “that’s a lot of dudes staring into the wind.” 😂
That's also alot of dudes standing on the edge of a cliff without a care in the world.
@dathorndike4908 Especially the bass player! Dude looks like Ray Liotta😅 and he's pretty close to the edge there
This song came out in 1985. At that time, I was going out to the dance clubs 3x a week, sometimes 5x. Man, did I love to dance! Still do! I should have been a professional dancer.
The Black lady singing with them is Robin Clark. She has a great voice. She appeared on a few Simple Minds songs. She also worked with David Bowie.
The comment about Robin not being with the group at the beginning of the Video because it might have been Racial threw me off. It had more to do with the fact that she wasn't part of the band but they wanted to showcase her and her incredible voice instead.
Robin wasn't a full time member of the band but she guested on a number of songs and was a big part of the album that this song was on Once Upon A Time.
@@xoxxobob61 I know right, how could it be a racial thing when they had Mel Gaynor in the band.
@@poppletop8331 WTH? who said this? SIMPLE MINDS also did a great tribute song to Nelson Mandela callled MANDELA DAY, oh my there is not a racist bone in Jim and Charlie, and dare I say it the whole organisation! These are a supergroup of the late 70s, 80s and up to Mid 90s with one huge hit after another, LONG LIVE SIMPLE MINDS !
I believe that it was released in '84
That was the year that the movie was released. 😊
Simple minds have an insane catalogue
This song was , to me, a celebration of life. That is the feeling I still get every time I hear it.
Defined the ‘80’s. Great musicians.
Hard core banger. Amazing musicianship. Defined the ‘80’s.
In 1985, the year this was released, Simple Minds performed at Live Aid. They gained huge exposure from that, although their set was cut short. Can't recall what the reason was all these years later.
Their song has a subtle R & B sound.
That drummer is Dope!!!!
Man this and a few Tears for Fears songs basically defined 1985 and 6, til Inxs came out with the Kick album in 87 and took over by putting like 7 singles into the top 10. This one makes me 7 years old sitting on the living room floor in my childhood home every time the video comes on, bc I'd switch to that when the good cartoons were over and the bible anime they used to air came on lol (I don't know what that shit was, def a religious cartoon though). But then I was basically raised by MTV. I'm glad they found that lady on the cliff, what a stroke of luck that she happened to be able to sing lmao
Come to think of it here's a lil pocket of 1980's goodness from Australia:
Inxs - Devil Inside, New Sensation, Need You Tonight all have incredible hooks
I believe this top Scottish band filmed this video in the cat mountains in new York state , beautiful scenery, forgot the name , cat something.
Simple Minds are with out doubt one of the best bands around. Their discography stems from 1978 - present day. Absolutely fantastic when playing live.
Too many songs to refer to that this band has produced over the years. However try Belfast Child (1989) for starters.
ALL THE THINGS SHE SAID is another good one by them.
Anything from Once Upon A Time is pure gold
I saw the video first when it came out vh1 I remember there was an episode of their music video program Rose odonald hosted it like 1986 or 87
The album this song was from , Once Upon A Time, changed the lives of so many people worldwide. Hearing Alive & Kicking you can understand why. But moreso, because the other seven songs were just as good.
This is one special song. I heard Simple Minds before, liked their songs but the moment I heard Alive and Kicking in 1985, I became a huge fan.
Year ❤😂amazing
❤Simple Minds!
You did a great job breaking it down!! 👏🏼👏🏼
I was 19 yo when I first heard it and was a big fan since 1981.
9 th grade 1985.Great song.great memories 👌
I followed this band since 1982, they are fantastic. Try out, Belfast Child by Simple Minds
I think the sample you're thinking of is Broken Wings by Mister Mister
I was at secondary school (11-16) here in the uk.
Simple minds are from Glasgow Scotland.
Prob their most well known hit in the uk and US would be don't you forget about me.
It was used on the end credits of 80's brat pack classic the breakfast club.
Please do food for thought,1 in 10,red red wine(the long version)by UB40.they are a group of lads from Birmingham north England with a love of reggae.
In the uk growing up bands were mixed.they got together through their love of the same types of music.
Yeah she's the smart one farthest from the edge.

I suggest you check out Broken Wings by Mr. Mister.
Genesis or phil collens
that broken wings song is from mister mister originally
That's not true. Broken Wings and Alive & Kicking were both released as singles in 1985. Mister Mister and Simple Minds wrote both their songs in different parts of the world at nearly the same time, so there is very little chance one could have even heard of the other's bass line. Chalk it up to coincidence
