“A melody played on the strings of our souls and the rhythm that rattled us down to the bone."
Join Angel as she watches Disney Pixar's Coco (2017) for the first time. An overwhelmingly breathtaking animation about a Mexican boy Miguel who goes on an adventure of a lifetime...but not in life?!? A story relatable for so many, of loved ones passed and more, depicted in the most beautiful way, that truly elates one's spirit with the most vibrant colors and sounds. Does a family animation get any better than this??
Welcome! I'm so happy you're here at the very beginning of the channel...we're going on an adventure!

What was your favorite aspect of the movie and how it was made?? The music, the animation, the story?? Do you have any traditional recipes from YOUR family and culture? My family has a lot of Cajun recipes...I LOVE to learn and LOVE to eat, so let me know!

      What? 2017 wasn't yesterday?
My dad's from North Africa, so yeah there's a few dishes. They're really particular to where he's from so I've never actually found online recipes, otherwise I'd link them (Sorry)
This is easily the best movie Pixar has made since Up and it's not even close. It's so well written that you can enjoy it even though you know what's going to happen, because that isn't the point of the movie
I'll be honest, I found your reaction to the movie making me much more emotional than I was when I originally saw it by myself
If you haven't seen it yet, check out Turning Red
I adored it, that movie put a smile on my face from beginning to end

My mother is from Mexico.. born and raised.. so when this movie came out I LOVED it!! Sadly I lost my grandma (her mom.. who lived in Mexico) less than a year after this movie came out…but the music and and the culture (even down to the marigolds) was perfectly done!! I love it and cry every time I watch it!! Fondly remembering my grandmother!!

I made the mistake of watching this movie at work, about a year after my ex-husband walked out on our daughter and marriage, for his married co-worker.
So, not exactly the same circumstances as Hector, but I was hanging on to A LOT of anger because it was still fresh and raw. But, I saw how holding on to that could end up hurting our daughter.
This movie completely broke me, I was sobbing like crazy at my desk LOL
Now, several years later (and lots of therapy!), my ex and I co-parent really well, and our daughter is flourishing.
But, this was such a beautiful movie....Disney/Pixar do such a wonderful job. I hope you're able to react to more animated movies!! I highly recommend Inside Out!

Oh, wow; thank you for sharing this! It really touched me, and I know many will find it so relatable. I would have been sobbing so hard at my desk as well; I can only imagine! This triggered a lot of things for me too (including the relationship aspects). I was thinking to myself during the movie, if I had a child, I would have really, really been a wreck.
That is flippin' awesome you guys co-parent well, now ( love therapy/counseling), and I'm so happy for your daughter!! :)
Yes, this movie is beautiful in every way...and I haven't seen Inside Out yet, so that is a great recommendation. Thank you! I'm absolutely reacting to more animated movies...I didn't realize how much I had missed them/needed them back in my life! This was perfect. Thank you again, for your comment. Loved it. See you for the next animation!

So recognizable, just from clothes and eyebrows :) But I've also loved art since as long as I've loved movies (forever), so that is a big reason why. :) I loved he was using her as his main dress up character. Bienvenidos a mi mundo, Angelita. Vamos a ver que información tenemos por usted.
The film was originally going to be titled Dia De Los Muertos but between difficulty applying for the trademark and backlash from Mexican officials, they changed the title. Coincidentally the film is retitled as Viva in Brazil because Coco translates into a swear word in Portuguese.
This film has the longest production period for a Pixar film as production began in 2011 but the film wasn't released until 2017.
Gael García Bernal (Hector) is the only member of the main cast to voice both the English and Spanish version.
In the grand tradition of Pixar films, a Pizza Planet Truck does a drive-by in the montage with Grandma saying "no music!"
The orange flowers are Aztec Marigolds and are the traditional flowers used in Dia de Los Muertos and are seen all the over the film.
The filmmakers and producers made repeated trips to Mexico and participated in a local family's traditional Day of the Dead ceremony in order to really capture all the intricate customs displayed and captured an instance of the family dog trying to sneak food which led to including the scene where Dante is sneaking food off of the Ofrenda.
The Land of the Dead is visually based on the Mexican city Guanajuato with its architecture resembling the town's natural hillside Terrain.
The village of Santa Cecilia is named after the patron saint of musicians.
The film's content and themes would've required a heavy censorship in order to play in China, however the review board was so touched by the film that it's one of the few films to be unaltered or uncensored before release.
Pixar has a history of sneaking in Easter eggs referencing both their past films such as the Woody, Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and Mike from Monsters Inc. pinatas that Miguel passes by on his way to the Town Square to shine shoes and to tease their next big projects such as The Incredibles logo that's in the background when Miguel and Hector stroll through the land of the dead, setting up The Incredibles 2.
Miguel was originally supposed to be just a guitarist but when they found out that actor Anthony Gonzalez could sing, they also gave Miguel the aspiration to be a singer as well. Also the finger work shown while Miguel is practicing alongside the video tape is accurate guitar playing.
Coco is a nickname for Socorro which is a traditional woman's name in Mexico.
Above all else, this film felt like my childhood and my mom's childhood and even my grandma's childhood.
When you grow up in a Mexican family, so much of what you saw in this film and just it's captured beautifully from the food that you're going to eat (even if you're not hungry LOL) to having to navigate through the family and of course having to try to explain what you want to do with your life even when it goes against the family's wishes. It hits on so many levels and I'm really glad that you got to experience this film too.
Hasta la próxima vez, Angelita 🖤
Ps: points for the police academy four shout out!

Brian...I am going to have to start recording myself when I read your comments with all this awesome info...I said "Oh my gosh", and "Are you serious?!?" SO many times! lol I love this!!! Wow.
First, really cool stuff about the title. I'm actually glad they had to go with Coco (because it added more mystery to the film for me...I didn't know who or what Coco was! haha), but ohhh, that makes sense they would have to change it in Brazil to Viva (I love the title Viva for it, also).
Production for this began in 2011?? WOW. Well, they did a great job, and I'm happy they got it done. :)
Thank you for telling me some of the voice actors. I still have to look up the rest (at the end of my discussion I get upset with myself for not looking at the voice actors in the credits lol) They were so great, and I had no idea Gael García Bernal (Hector) was the only one to do both versions. Awesome. He was incredible...they all were.
Anthony Gonzalez was the kid? Oh, wow. SO good! And yess...I'm happy they put his singing into it, and that was him playing the guitar? That is so cool/ makes me love all of this even more. Plus, I'm happy they used accurate finger strumming/playing (that's one thing that doesn't surprise me, since Pixar does try with that kind of stuff).
Speaking of Pixar...I wasn't even thinking to look for all the usual Easter eggs. It has been so long since I had watched one! It's probably good, because I didn't want to miss the story, but now I am going to have to go back and look for all of those you mentioned. I love they do that, since I grew up with Toy Story, and then the rest that followed (especially the 90s and earlier 2000's ones). I still need to watch Inside Out, by them too, which another comment mentioned!
I love that Coco is actually a nickname for a traditional Mexican women's name...I love that this movie was filled with Mexican traditions. It is one of the aspects of it that made my heart the happiest. My mom and I have often talked about Mexican families and the beauty in their families and traditions. We love and appreciate it so much (I wish my own culture shared more similarities in those aspects). I love that you are a part of that culture. You're one of my kindest subs and patrons, and now I see why...you grew up right! hahaha Also, I've only had genuine tamales twice in my life (from friend's houses/families), and they were SO good. That is why I was nodding for Miguel to take them.
Seriously, though, it is very awesome, and I appreciate you, your culture, and all of the info. This movie really is one of my favorite animated movies, now.
And no...points to YOU for picking up on that Police Academy reference! Wasn't sure if anyone would notice it, but it made me happy, so I put it in there.
See you soon for the next one, Brian!

@@AngelGroves Hey Angel, I'm really glad you enjoyed all my information and that it came in clutch.
In regards to traditions, I may not know what your background is but I do know that the South and Georgia in particular, has a lot of traditions that don't have to be as vibrant or as extensive as Dia de los Muertos but they can still do the job of connecting you to your family, your friends and make you appreciate the little things in your everyday life. You're a fantastic woman yourself and I know that with enough time and research on your end, you can find connection to either your heritage or your childhood that deserves to carry on today and in the future.
Also not to brag but where I'm at in Texas, I got a steady hook up on tamales and I can even ship them Frozen to other parts of the country, if need be.. So just know, Brian got your hook up when you open a PO Box later on!
Also, who in the right mind wouldn't know a Police Academy film, more specifically Police Academy 4: citizens on patrol!? Heck, in the right situation (like the time I didn't have power for a week), I could do a one man Recreation of that film alone.. Don't ask me how I do the Michael Winslow stuff, I just find a way. 🤪
Anyway, thank you for always putting out such amazing content and never be ashamed of putting your heart on your sleeve especially when it's something that can be powerfully emotional like this. Also for future reference you may just want to keep a box of Kleenex next to your monitor, some of the films you have coming up are also going to pull the Heartstrings when you least expect it.
      Until next time Angel 🖤

Music is truly a universal language so deeply profound in that it resonates and reflects actual soul. Yes, getting to see this in theaters was so magical and right away this took its place as my favorite Pixar movie just narrowly nudging out "Ratatouille." But truly the most wonderful aspect of this movie the year that it came out was being able to share it with family. This was one of the last movies that my dad got to enjoy (he was a composer, music was his life), and grandma was still alive as well during this time. A veritable celebration of our culture and heritage, and we all got to experience it together. 💗 So glad that you enjoyed it and still wishing I had seen this reaction sooner. ^ _ ^ It's still a holiday treat even now.
Oh, the song that stood out to you, "La Llorona," is featured in another fantastic film rife with music and passion which just so happens to be about the artist in the afterlife that you asked about. If you have not already seen it of course, I highly recommend that you make time to watch "Frida" from 2002.

Coco us easily my favourite Disney/Pixar movie, but one thing never made sense to me was that Hector thought Miguel putting his photo up once he comes home would work even though he told Miguel that the same thing wouldn't work for Cheech because Miguel didn't know Cheech in life. He didn't know Hector in life either! The only way it worked in the end for Hector to be remembered was when the laat living person who actually knew him while he was still alive (his daughter Coco) remembered him AND could tell the story about her papa to the next generations (with the relatives this time actually having a name and face to put to this abstract idea that had been her papa before that).

      @poli.reneramos ปีที่แล้ว +1

the thing is that it's common in Mexico to put up photos of family that may be long past gone and nobody alive knew them but, they are family so it's our generational tree. You can put friends and neighbors there too because it's about the special people you remember. In this movie they made it so if your photo is put up in the day of the dead tribute somewhere it means you are not forgotten and dont disappear in the afterlife.

Coco still remembered Héctor, so he only needed his photo on an Ofrenda to pass customs.

@@AngelGroves yeah! This movie did it pretty good on making Mexican music not sound like the typical Hollywood one which sounds more Spanish and who knows what else, instead of Mexican. Still has a thing or two there which are creative liberties with it, just like with some elements in the story, like making Dante turn into an alebrije when those creatures are their own thing and don't really have much of a lore since they are kind of a recent tradition, or to see Dante as a street dog when a xoloitzcuntle is a pretty expensive type of dog and culturally important too since they are the guardians that will lead you through the river of the dead, not the alebrijes... but the Banda part sounds like a bad parody of it 😂 And I am not even a Banda fan but that was not it.
They were gonna get famous Banda players but supposedly none of them knew how to read music, which I doubt since a lot of the pros sometimes even started with jazz or other stuff where they would need papers, so they went with some Mexican school kids. But that was the very problem. They should have kept the actual Banda players and let them come up with something themselves. Weird L from Giacchino and/or Germaine Franco there.

@@AngelGroves Yep. This film's too recent and a bit out of my usual sort for me to have caught up with yet. If you watch more 80s action/horror movies I'll totally have already seen those. Come to think of it most modern films I have watched in the past year have been sequels to 80s classics (Prey, Hellraiser, Ghostbusters: Afterlife). Anyways I hope you're having a great weekend. :D

I believe that flying object was a family member of yours
I Would recommend making a Ofrenda (offering) for day of the dead
The 1st of November the children cross and stay for the arrival of the adults that cross the 2nd of November
    Both cross at midnight
I set up my ofrenda a week before but some start the 1st of october
Just set up a table with pictures, candles, glass of water, salt, flowers and objects or stuff they liked
Their favorite food is set up the day before they cross
