  • Gord Martin and I test out the lower Black River; a seldom-traveled whitewater route totaling 72km from highway 614 to highway 17. True to typical travel in Superior region, it's not quite as straightforward as we hope.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man it was still flowing strong...I wonder how big of an impact the heavy rain had. Seems like it could be viable later in the season. It has a small hydro dam south of highway 17. Maybe that's a factor too. The upper Black (i.e. above hwy 614 where we launched) is a more well-traveled section with good whitewater too. Thanks Jim!

    Another great video - thank you! I've been a regular visitor (at least once a year) to the Algoma area since I was a year old; I'm 55 now and it is looking like the border won't be open anytime soon. Yes, of course you can troll with a fly rod. You can only use wet flies of course, and its best with a sinking line, unless it's really shallow. I have a weight forward sinking tip line that I use for that, and occasionally just to get deep when I'm still fishing, but they're a bit of a pain to cast with.

    Glad to see you finally kneeling 16:20. A helmet might be a good idea in the rougher stuff as well as a bit of practice with off side paddle strokes. That constant flipping the paddle from side to side will get you in trouble.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahah sometimes I remember 😅 Yeah absolutely, a helmet went on my shopping list after this one. Unfortunately that boat has a deep keel which makes paddling on one side a lot more challenging. For instance, my lateral movement with a draw is much less than it would be without a keel. A solo boat without a keel is also on my list lol. Thanks David!

    Great video, thanks for bringing us along. One question: we notice that insects (especially mosquitos, black flies) usually have a significant presence on your Ontario trips. For latitudes that are “near north” Ontario (defined as areas around Algonquin Park and to the west, and as far north French River / Lake Nipissing), what are the sweet spots on the calendar for decent weather and diminished insect presence?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Mark, I haven't noticed a huge difference based on latitude. Maybe the onset is a week later here than it is south of Sudbury, but I've found June and July to be buggy anywhere in ON. August you might start to get lucky but even it can be bad. If you want to be relatively assured of few bugs, it's either right after ice out or well into September. Add warm weather to the criteria and it's really mid-Sept or bust :)

    Hi John, I was inspired by your video from a couple of years ago where you did a four part series covering your trip to Noganosh provincial park with your dad. I am planning to do a similar canoe excursion in a couple of weeks (early August) with my son who is a teenager. I was hoping you could name a few routes that you think would be most suitable, based on your past experience. Here are a few criteria. We will be sharing a single canoe that is a 16 foot royalex model weighing 59 pounds. We don’t have any experience portaging a canoe. We are game to expanding our horizons to include some portaging, but probably best to stick to routes that are not too tough, technical or poorly marked. We will be starting in the GTA and willing to drive up to five hours one way. We will be in one car so hoping to find an option that involves a loop so we can get back to our car with our canoe. We will have 5 to 7 days to invest and are open to staying in a camp for more than one night rather than trying to maximize our mileage. We would rather be in a place where we have relative privacy when we’re camping. Having said all that, what would be your top three or four suggested destinations given the above information. The Noganosh trip that you did with your dad seems like it could fit the objectives...

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome Mark! Nog is a great one aside from not being a loop.
      This one through Waskasina is a great option.
      www.myccr.com/canoeroutes/wasaksina-driftwood-loop
      If you want to keep it simple, you could stay on Wicksteed, launching from this point, and go farther into Mackenzie and others.
      goo.gl/maps/DUECExZkZa8eUpmy6
      Donald Lake (northeast of Matagamasi from this access point) is a gem. Similar to Nog, three reasonable ports each way. You can loop it through Kukagami and Doon L but in low water Doon isn't great.
      goo.gl/maps/jvypgo79CYWSsPNv9
      Check em out...any questions, let me know :)

    • @markchuchra8399
      @markchuchra8399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for all the ideas, Jonathan. We will add those other destinations to our bucket list, but I think we are now fixating on Nog for this upcoming next trip. I’m not fussed by the notion that our “loop” would mean retracing our path back to the car/ starting point. Sometimes seeing the same territory from a 180° different perspective can seem like a different/new trip!
      For convenience and safety, what do you think the best place for a parking and launch spot would be for a trip into Nog? We are willing to pay for parking if that provides some advantages (And to pump a few extra loonies into the local economy)...
