Hello Sorin, We don't know the full history of this laptop, but my guess is this laptop had overheating issues already, perhaps because of a faulty fan or heatsink. Windows update was just a trigger, as during an update CPU is always utilizes more power and resources. Overheating and dead CPU as a result.
Uninstalled some games was a clue. Must have maxed out his hard drive. Windows updates...pulls in a bunch of downloads..maybe wiped over a custom boot sector somehow? ...like trying to make space for games by freeing up that unused partition. Just a theory pre watching this lol
The USB-C charger ports are the biggest mistake ever done in the history of Computers. Especially on Lenovos, I've had three of them, the one with the barrel connector lasted the whole time I had it. The two others with the USB-C charging ports broke down in the first month of use. Of those two one was brand-new.
When you used the thermal camera on the back side of the board, PJs are polygon solder jumpers, and PJ14 was hot, so if a component was shorted to ground, that joint would get hot too. Re-examine the chips that get hot as it could be a faulty regulator.
Some of the ICs like small power supplies can get hot. I've made this mistake in the past and guess what? I was back in square one after ;). I'd say you need a datasheet, or schematics to work more efficiently. We base our work only on our knowledge, others knowledge and datasheets of ICs. This is not enough many times, and many times we waste more time than we should on repairs. That's my opinion. And, I'd call it a no-fix, or ask the customer if they want to risk buying that CPU from China, I'd not take a risk ;).
@@dogosrobi Not true. I have seen many cases, especially Lenovo, where the BIOS is applied automatically with regular updates. Acer is also another case.

when i see shortage on cpu/gpu/ram power rail, there's a good habit to take out/ disconnect one of the leg of the coil. Maybe, just maybe, the faulty is mosfet or some regulators, not the main chip. Or very unlikely the rail shorted by pcb.
Hi, not in this case unfortunately, Thermal camera shows well, where short is. Current is always going through smallest resistance, in this case we have all seen that chipset on this CPU is getting hot...
Sorin, What temperature do you use on your hot air station? Like to replace micro USB charging port? And is air speed on 2? I messed up removing a charging port last night. It has me wondering if it wasn't enough heat. Or I didn't wait long enough before trying to remove it. However, I ruined the board by lifting the pads. It was my own device so worst case I buy a new one. However I do want to know what you think is the problem? Thank you. I love your videos.
An i5 8250 is not old... but its also not exactly new either. The fact the only available merchant wants that much for it is ridiculous. The cost of that replacement CPU (even if it DID work) is 75% of the replacement value of the laptop. I would wait on fixing the laptop until a new board appeared for 1/2 the price of that CPU or a new cpu appeared for 1/4th that CPU's price.
I had a simmilar issue with surface pro 3 or 4. After it not being used for a long time, when started a lot of updates was going on one after another ( but No bios update). At some point the device wanted a restart (normal update procedure) and never actually restarted but got stuck with a black screen. Screen backlight was on and so the keybord backlight. Pressing the power button would switch it off, pressing again would switch it on with the same result (black screen and nothing you can do). Unfortunately, I didn't know Sorin at the time and I throw the device to the bin.
Hello Sorin, as always your videos are great. One question, what clamp do you use for the bios programmer, I have at least 2 and it is difficult for them to read correctly and hold the chip well. Greetings from Spain - Granada

Getting chips is hard, especially since intel has BootGuard in their SoCs, just like chipsets, which means used CPU is useless, unless somehow it was taken from exactly the same manufacturer computer. So you have to get a new chip. But here is a catch, according to Intel, average CPU is worth $400-600 + tax + whatever. Yet somehow some people get them for $200 or less, and I don't understand how.
