I got shocked and supprised and felt like a real goal scored by sorin 31:18 when I heard "we have the charging light, that's insane.." like the surgery was successful.
You read my mind when you pulled that chip again to check it. You videos are among my favorite because you keep it real Sorin. People need to see reality, and they get that with your channel. Sometimes things don't go as expected. We are imperfect, and we can make mistakes. But we can sometimes recovery from our mistakes and still get satisfaction for job well done!
next time you should waste an extra one minute to wick the pads on the board, and replace with low melt solder, you will even be able to lower the temperature to solder back!!
Well done Sorin, good to see you still get excited after a successfull repair! Keep on doing what you do, we learn a lot from you. Greetings from South-Africa.
Fun fact, I was watching this video from a UX363 that came in for repair for the exactly same fault. Fortunately, it was only a charger issue and anyway it is under warranty, but it was nice seeing your video.
Another successful repair, I'm glad to see that you decided to order on Mouser. I hope the customer is also satisfied and will pay for the repair costs
Sorin, if the Asus laptop motherboard is similar to their desktop motherboards, after changing any components, the bios does an updating and training routine that takes a couple of minutes to complete. Thus the long black screen and update time. Also, the LED keyboard is programmable for visual effects. WB
I have a Dell XPS 13 with the same chip. And the same problem. I've ordered a replacement from mouser and will try to replace it. I'm new to hot air soldering so I'll definitely watch some tutorials first.
"Don't tell anyone, I'll never admit it" As he leaves it in the video. 🤭 Sorin, you did good, at least you had the insight to check your work before condemning it. We ALL make mistakes! 😉
If you buy a chip and they are a good seller they clean it. And you have to solder the chip because there is a layer of oxidation from the cleaner. And it wil not bond with the solder. Iam happy you found it and get it working.
That QFN failed soldering is like how all my QFN soldering look like on the first 3 attempts, usually after I burned my hands twice getting it to position 😁
Your works has been a great motivation to me Just don’t know how to get those equipments your using Cus we really need something like that in Nigeria. Nice work sire
I believe that chip needed to get programed from bios, that's why it took so long to start the first time, and it finished the job after starting, through update
Sorin, you need to clean the pads of the old solder first, prep pads with new solder before you solder the new chip in place. I have tried soldering these chips without doing this and they most times do not solder right and I only end up burning the chip trying to get it right. I never solder a QFN chip now without cleaning the pads first.
Sorin, this is not the first time I experienced the pins on the chip needed to be cleaned and tinned. Maybe, caused by the solder used by the manufacturer to tin the pads on the IC.
Great video, like a kid on Christmas morning 🤣 Your persistence paid off. And you showed how important it is to correctly solder a component like this. 🤭 You did that on purpose didn't you? 🤫😜
Awesome job Sorin, but you scared the crap out of me when you yelled 😅😅😅 normally i have to increase volume pretty high to hear you, and when you yelled it was then very loud and unexpected 😂😂
Great video as always 🤓 Could it be that new chips come with a protective film layer on the contacts that need to be burned or cleaned off, may explain that which we did not see 🤣
It is not that. It's due to Sorin's bad habit of reusing existing unleaded solder. The proper way to do it is adding flux to the pads, tin the pads with leaded solder and then reflow the chip in place. If you just desolder the chip and try to use the remaining solder to do the job, things like that do happen alot.
I believe you should clean the old solder when you take off the bad chip and reflow with new solder and then put new chip, I dont trust the solder on new chips Sorin just my opinion.
I told you to buy chips from Mouser or an authorized vendor. Especially if it's a complicated chip maybe MOSFET or capacitors have tolerance of fault of manufacture. Good luck
1. So it seems it's not like those pesky undocummented realtek chips with "it's NDA" kind of support. TI says in the DS: "Initial device configuration is configured through a configuration bundle loaded onto the device DURING BOOT. The bundle may be loaded through I2C or SPI." However there is some kind of firmware GUI config tool. 2. Aren't you afraid you'll melt some plastics under the board?
It almost looks like it was the chip doing the update. You soldered the chip and it was not initiated. When the laptop started the chip called for an update and updated itself with new firmware?
amazing i love when you say LOL :D haha . damn :( crazy with dh one both charging ports worked but with this dj one only 1 port work like with his burned one. End: wow!!!! amazing job hahahahah lets gooo ! (and chip order packing fully sealed amazing for real !)
Yup that chip need firmware to run. I have read the documention on that chip. Texsas Instrumen do provide the tools to program it. The chip also support external bios chip, to store the firmware. The chip can be reprogram with any SPI/I2C programmer. The tools natively support FTDI, Aardvark and TIVA programmer.
Good afternoon. I'm based in the UK and have a similar issue with my UX363 notebook? Sometimes it works for hours on end with no issues, other times it will require a power button discharge before it turns on. Now as of yesterday (14.08.24) after 6 months of on and off use, it fails to power up at all, no power led. What do you think my options are? 🤔 Many thanks in advance!
I have the same laptop and issue, stopped receiving power through the usbc ports. I took It to a repair shop and they told me it would need a whole new motherboard replacement. Was it just that 1 chip on the board the he replaced that was the issue?
30:25 no Sorin, this time is not good. Right side, 4th pin from the top and one above right down corner. You added new solder to the middle of the big ground pads under the chip, which was good idea, BUT if so, then during the heating, you have to press down the chip UNTIL you see the big balls of solder coming out from the edges. You pushed it down very well BUT I didn't see these balls coming out, so it means that the solder under the chip were not proper melted (solder outside the chip were melted - yes, but not under the chip on the huge ground pad) You heated it not enough time. So you soldered it but it didn't sit down to flat completely - so some pins can be unsoldered.
@Mr Guru yes. I told him many times in the past when he solder high power mosfets. Maybe it is not because of me, but now he is doing it very well - always he is pusihing it down. Here on this video he also pushed that IC down- so he understand how it needs to be done, but this time it was not enough heat.
Battery was too low, that is why it was negotiating 14V only. Once it picked up, it had increase it. However, can't believe how "ballsy" you are to desolder/solder the chip without removing the board... and with the screen closed
@@orange11squares In this case the screen is quite safe because it's touch and the digitizer can take heat, but connectors or palmrest or keyboard are easily damageable indeed.
I have a similar laptop but in my case, the laptop turns on, but does not charge. The second USB-C port does not work either, and the laptop just turns on with the first USB-C port. Do I have to replace the same chip?
31:20
The moment of joy when you fix the device is a unique feeling that just a repair man can undrestand.

Don't worry Sorin my eyes were shut. But be sure to clean the pads next time and add new solder before reflowing the chip.Btw. congrats, nice repair.

Try the TPS65988 on other unit if the TPS65988DJ does not work, no firmware required as per specs. Pre programmed with common usage scenarios

is that true, this shooting of compilation video was paused someday because you must order and wait new chip from Mouser shop?
At this moment 26:02 I looked here ...with the first DH chip, both charging ports worked 14:39 - 14:59....
hello sorin
if I remember the other one died on a Windows update exactly like this one
