    That fight in Superman vs The Elite is really a commentary on why comicbook heroes being "darker" because it's "realistic" or having "new takes" to "humanize" and "make them more relatable" isn't always a good thing, and often actually takes away what makes them the heroes we look up to.
    Because reality sucks, humanity can suck, but having an ideal to live up to encourages us to keep trying to be better people instead of making excuses to wallow in our collective misery and failings.

      There are practical reasons as well. By not killing, they can get assistance from the dominant human institutions.

    • @petergant1379
      @petergant1379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@Dunge0n Batman doesn't suck, but, by refusing to kill, under ANY circumstances, he HAS allowed many to be killed by those without his reservations against the use of lethal force to gain their main objective! Personally, I can see using lethal force on an individual who will use any means, including murder/mass murder, to gain some material benefit! They don't care, why should you hamstring yourself while trying to stop them, when, in many cases, they're relying on that very thing!?

    • @jakehero95
      @jakehero95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Dunge0n that is not true and I think you know it. There are absolutely realities where living up to that principle led one of them to be a beacon of what it means to be a hero for good and have a hard but accomplished and happy life, even having a family. Life isn't just supposed to be sunshine and rainbows. If you were "happy" all the time it would lose meaning becoming worthless. You would create destructive scenarios just to change that (there have been many studies that show this look them up). We struggle to better ourselves, improve our lives, and be able to *value* the good times. But I understand the feeling and thought process behind your comment.

    I really like the version that is the son of Zod, unlike the regular version that one is perfect, because it is nature vs nurture, in the regular he is the son of good people raised by good people, meanwhile he is the son of a bad person, that condemn others and basically killed the regular superman and sent his son in his place, but then he arrives and learn, and he becomes good despite being the son of who we can see as a villain, it is a much better message.

    • @kyriss12
      @kyriss12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Take the nature vs nurture a step further. OG supes had a relatively idealistic upbringing and inherently always looked for the scenario where he could save everyone. Whereas GaM superman was raised by illegal immigrants, and while still taught to be good and virtuous probably had a bit of a rougher upbringing, resulting in him being taking the more immediate route when saving lives and carrying those choices as a burden.

    • @speeddemonji9547
      @speeddemonji9547 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Good Superman isn’t perfect. No need to put down Clark to prop Hernan up. They’re both great characters but a redemption arc doesn’t necessarily make Hernan a better character, just different.
      Also implies he’s never had an arc. You also focus on nature quite a bit when really *nurture* is why both are the way they are, as Hernan had it a lot rougher than Clark. Nurture v Nature has always been a big part of the character

Thats just weird

      @@ridgefrost geez... you didn't really have to go into all of that a similar plot has been played out in a family oriented film from years ago xD he essentially stolen The Phantom Zone projector from Superman's Fortress of Solitude during a Justice League anniversary party that he was not invited at. He and Robin snuck to Arkham and transported his whole entire Rogues gallery into The Phantom Zone where they were all judged accordingly to be imprisoned there. That is until the Joker made a proposition to get them all out of there and storm Gotham City

    • @justin42520
      @justin42520 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ridgefrost although, if you do want to get psychological about Batman's need for his identity and villains oh, it is mainly on the aspect of him using his childhood trauma as a crutch in order to give a more symbolic tribute to his parents either just out of flat out, or the need to just be a hero. Joker is that reluctant kingship that he has with someone of a similar yet entirely different psychological state that he is in. The Killing Joke did illustrate that point along with several others on why Batman has chosen this nature to not kill despite his origins of killing villains including the Joker being not such a troublesome moral issue as it is now. You could also see this as him essentially wanting to be a sane man and proving that it is possible through trying to rehabilitate someone as broken as him much like The Joker is. While also trying to pursue that, he ends up doing the very thing that he sets out to destroy, which was he often price himself on the aspect of not killing because he knows he is teetering on that bridge of insanity if he does and a lot of his aggression would come out in the form of mutilation and murder if he kills that version of him that has been responsible for and holding back those urges.
      There has been possibilities on the fact that he doesn't really want to get better but just wants to have a purpose. White Knight definitely showcased that when Joker did get better by pointed out that Batman was a worse plague on Gotham than he ever was both in its economics and its reputation. Not only that but he also went as far as to clean up the streets of Gotham in a much more organized way even by working with the law itself despite his identity and reputation. There was even another case where Joker believed Batman to be dead and went on to try to have a normal life complete with Wife and Kids. Another case was even when he was involved in a catatonic state Batman was retired in Dark Knight Returns. You can imagine what happened when Batman came into the picture.
      The point is that Batman is the way he is for multiple reasons either having to try to fix his own mistakes or struggling to keep his mental health in check while giving himself a further purpose. This purpose also could have been a better thing for him if he focused on trying to fix a lot of Gotham's problems economically and do a lot more cracking down on the corrupt system they have within the city both medical and law official. There have been plenty of villains killed but he also does feel the need to try to heal them before anything but it became a further purpose because he selfishly focused on his own.

They clearly need some sort of leader" (an ubermensch fuhrer if you will) and that would be a far more interesting story. What makes the Injustice interesting (at least in the 1st 3 volumes) is that even tho he's broken he doesn't become a true tyrant overnight. He still puts in an attempt to hold on to some morals.
      You see the slippery slope Batman always talks about as he & gradually gets worse. It doesn't help that his supporters enable/justify his actions at a vulnerable (not physical) state. Kidnapping his parents wasn't great for his psyche either.

      It isn't really about the killing, though that is part of it, it's the idea that when you use your personal power to be judge jury and executioner for one thing then you will find the reason to do it again for another. You start with the absolute worst like joker, and most people will agree with you. Then you end up going after the people who have killed people before but they aren't the insane serial murderers. Then there are those who commit crimes recklessly but don't actually try to kill anyone, and what if you personally think that a war is unjust but you actually don't know the facts? Where does the line finally end? And what stops you from moving it once you moved it the first time? When you have massive amounts of power you need to have control. It's why even in self defense cases there sometimes is a trial, even if it's obvious. Or a person accused of murder but evidence comes out they were framed or blackmailed etc.

    Injustice does a good job of exploring why superheroes don't kill. It became a real slippery slope for Superman. From justified (Joker, Robin offing Zsasz) to a grey area (Clark killed Ollie over an accident) to just murder (Shazam is killed for questioning Clark's methods. In the game it shows Superman suffocating Shazam which wouldn't work as Shazam is immune to Clark's powers however it is more likely he was in Billy form but Netherrealms would never get DC to approve Superman offing a child but that was what happened.) Killing became an addiction to Clark and like many other addicts, it started because of pain.

      injustice superman didn't fall because he killed, he fell because joker made him emotionally vulnerable and nobody was there to help. batman basically abandoned him, and wonder woman stoked his anger/vulnerability causing him to go down the path we saw him go. superman isn't emotionally invulnerable, but he's not so out of his mind one kill would throw him down that path like it would have with batman.

      you mean why DC hero's don't kill, Marvel Hero's kill all the time, usually in combat against evil foes, only certain Marvel Heros don't kill, such as Spider-man, who are more morally minded, but MOST of the Avengers and X-Men will and have killed.

      That's because some people don't believe that even a benevolent god-like being can have a sudden heel turn, should he ever desire. Devilish variants of you are never a pleasant thought but, in some ways, it tests your resolve and dedication to your cause, to ensure that you never become like them or worse (basically, cautionary tales). Above all else, it forces you to revise yourself and temper your power before it invites misery and suffering. This may sound philosophical, but these are my thoughts. He was not meant to be that way when he was first made, he was made to be the world's greatest superhero who stands for truth justice & the american way, a symbol, a beacon, very intelligent and a great inspiration to others as well as a great natural leader of the JLA.

      There is a reason a lot of writers try to make their characters more edgy/depressed/cold etc. Because they need it to write...
      That being said I find the stories where superman is just his typical boyscout self but having to deal with something he can't just punch away.
      The one comic where he tries to talk a suicidal girl out of jumping and promising her not to catch her if she truely choose to jump so REALLY good.

    I love DC because of their insane multiveree and just generally way darker stories compared to Marvel.

    It's weird that you mispronounce names like Ra's and Silas when these are names you can audibly hear in the movies you reference.

    In the graphic novel where the last one was adapted from, the Joker straight up murders a bunch of kids with cotton candy. That really stuck with me as a kid - the entire book was so much darker then anything I had read from DC at the time.
