- "Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!"
- King Theoden as quoted from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Chapter V "The Ride of the Rohirrim"
This is by far my favorite scene of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and one of my favorite parts of J.R.R. Tolkiens works. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
Go peacefully to the halls of your forefathers, Theoden King.
RIP, Bernard Hill. 1944-2024
In whose powerful company you will no longer feel ashamed to be…
Farewell Theoden, son of Thengel, King of Rohan!
Peace be with you!
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.
I love the description in the book, how it basically describes this old king suddenly exploding with might, energy, and defiance.
Beautifully quoted. Tolkien's way of using his words was legendary.
❤
'The battle fury of his father's ran like new fire in his veins' always gets me, there's something there that really resonate deep in you as a man at that line
Holy s--t, Tolkien's writing. I'd forgotten how good it is at best!
I wanted to hear him say it...... One... Last... Time... Let the Symblemyne grown upon your grave great King ❤
Words can't explain the feeling of seeing this in the cinema 2003 at the age of 15.
Was a little older but after having read a dozen times lotr, my life too became a better place to dream
Or at 11
Everytime I see it I remember it on the big screen wish I could have seen the expanded versions on the big screen some how
Yes
Or at 20 when you’re properly old enough to appreciate it 😉
Rarely does a film make you feel so much like this does.
RIP Bernard Hill, king of Rohan
1:02: What an actor. His expression captured that moment of desperation so perfectly. Theoden had no hope of success, and was looking at both his own death and the death of his entire people. Yet he knew what had to be done, to fulfill his oaths, and his people's honor. What a god-damned MAN.
Ride for wrath, ride for ruin, and the world's ending. FORTH EORLINGAS!
A "lesser son of better sires" he certainly was not.
I love how even for a trilogy the music never changed, the feel of each movie was the same. It all felt like one film. All 11 hours of it. They dont make films with passion like this anymore its sad.
Agreed. One of the big issues I jabe with the Hobbit is they all feel like separate movies. And the amazing Dwarf theme from the first one is abandoned in the later movies.
Watch Dune
A HUGE part of that is because all three were filmed before the first movie release.
There was a lot of post work over time, a couple of reshoots, but again most of everything was shot from the start.
As amazing as Theoden's speach is, the line that always get me is "courage for our friends."
That's basically the theme of ~80% of all of the Medals of Honor ever issued. Nothing inspires us like love for our brothers.
I just cried my eyes out... Eowyn was scared
But she knew Merry was too.. but she fought through her own fear because she had to be strong for him...
Peter Jackson is an incredible director, but I imagine even he was in awe of what he helped create. Everything - every character, shot and musical score is perfect.
I cried. Im 22 now, watched this like 40 times.
My God! What a man! What a leader!
i wish the battle of five armies had look half as real as this.
that thing was downright terrible. Too small and the battle sequences in general just don't LOOK like lotr
+Misael Meraz ah man i tried defending the film. however; i lost it when Beorn was cut out of most of the film. my heart broke and cracked alittle
i love dwarfs, they are my favourite fantasy race, but making Dain Ironfoot look like a cartonish characters made me angry as fuck. Hes king of the dwarfs an strong and intelligent guy something like a Elron of the dwarfs and they made him like a drunk hillbilly.
the actor was good, he was just following a script, but men they butchered that character for me, at least they made thorin as i immagine
tell that to rings of power hobbit may be a downgrade but they didn’t make elves look like elves
What an honor to be the avtor who played the mostvepic scenebin cinema, based of one the BEST books ever written, and doing such an amazing job.
Don Bernard Hill.. you are inmortal.
One of the only times in a story where they charged not chanting victory or glory but an honorable death. So powerful after all these years.
You know, every time I watch those movies I always forget this part is there, I see gandalf lose out against the witch king and lose all hope and then there's the horns, I always bloody forget about the horns, I think: shit, what's coming now, and then I see this, there's no feeling like this
best moment in film history. hands down
Theoden understands the power of a speech. Éowyn's expression when hearing the battlecry is "death" sums up the gut-wrenching fear and apprehension of facing down your own likely (painful) death, something most of us wont experience, and even for those who serve, not a normal scenario in modern warfare. But by the 3rd cry they are both "bought-in" and the power of the rallying call and the group mentality is filling them with courage.
I get chills. Every time.
THIS IS HOW HUMANITY SHOULD STAND AGAINST ALL EVIL.
but it wont.. there will be bunch of people rooting for the orcs coz some rich asshole told them orcs are the victims.
Duty, fealty, and honor is what the LOTR is all about. This scene encapsulates all of those things. One of the single greatest scene ls in film.
Gives me goosebumps every time!
Imagine a World leader actually leading the way in battle.
I think Alexander the great fought his battles, as well as Genghis Khan
The greatest cavalry charge in movie history. And what a speech!
Tolkien was an underrated Genius.
Arise! Arise, Riders of Théoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... and the sun rises! Ride now... Ride now... Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death!"
Forth! And fear no darkness!
When you’ve been having your own way for 2.5 movies and then, suddenly, it stops going to plan.
“Our arrows with block out the su….”
That's a leader right there, I'd follow him to death in an instant
I need a horse and a spear everytime I see this scene. Epic on every word, on every tone of the music... Magic!
The most epic scene in the history of cinema !
One of the best scenes in the entire trilogy (most of them in The Return of the King).
one of the finest moments in cinema history. (in my opinion, if you disagree i do not care and will no be listening to arguments)
Literally have goosebumps watching this.....
Always love that over excited guy at 3:42
Never not going to make me weep. Knowing that Bernard Hill passed makes it even sadder. Hail, Theoden King.
3:40 Love the guy charging on the horse and he gives it all 😮
I watched the trilogy so much as a kid, watching it again gives me chills still as the smaller details like the music, the clinging of The kings sword on the tips of the spear as he shouts words of courage not even knowing his daughter is in the frontline with him..
This is it. The greatest scene in cinema history.
Remember a time when sequels didn't disappoint? They not only lived up to all the hype but somehow managed to exceed it? It truly was movie magic. In the theater as a kid trying to hide my face because I was crying 🤣.
The look of sheer horror on the terrible faces of the army of Uruk-Hai as their inevitable doom comes stampeding at them, thousands of men strong, is one of the most amazing displays in cinema history. These creatures once shown and thought of to be an unstoppable force, now met with the true meaning of valor and courage, as they begin to retreat only to be trampled and absolutely slaughtered. And they can do not a single thing to stop them from their advance. Truly one of, if not the greatest trilogies of all time.
OMG :"D this is my favorite scene from all the trilogy and the books! I´m still remember when I fisrt saw this on the movies, all the fellings comeback! just AMAZING!!

To you military leaders, let your battle cry forever be FORTH EORLINGAS!!!!!!!!!

@3:43 that is the best few seconds of that whole segment. This guy is committed.
The Lord Of The Rings The Return Of The King And The Life On Our Planet
No movie will ever top this specially for it’s time era!
One of the best scenes ever
Fear the power of a heavy cavalry charge, especially when lead by Karl Urban with crazy eyes
Can't go wrong with a little crazy Karl Urban thrown in.
Do not go gentle into that goodnight, old age should burn and rave at close of day; rage, rage against the dying of the light. Rip Bernard Hill, may the king of rahan rest for eternity, much love and respect.
Bernard💙
Third Era is the time of Man.
"Ride now! Ride now! Ride for ruin and the world's end! " That phrase alone got me into motorcycle
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
From a military point of view, the attack by Rohirim fixes the orc army in place. It can't continue the assualt as it responds to the attack. This sets the stage for Aragorns arrival with the Army of the Dead. Basically, the or7cs are destroyed by a double envelopement. And yes, it's a great speech.
What's up with thar order to Grimbold? "--take your company right, after you reach the wall!" It's a fine scene, but that's a tiny flaw: apparently the left wing was supposed to turn flanks, but that is never shown. Actually, it's Eomer on the left, so where is Grimbold's regiment supposed to go? There's not much room on the field for a sweeping move like that... They'd turn right, and basically run into the city walls. 😦
Not to nit-pick, I've just seen this scene over the years many enough time to really take it apart.
I loved the book battle, because it was total chaos in the darkness, and the Rohirrim used it to their advantage perfectly.
Soo awesome!!
RIDE!!!!!
"I fear no darkness!"
"Arise, arise, riders of rohan! Fell deeds awake! Fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered! A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
~so this is what I have to do to get a damn sandwitch~ ..Eomer, take your eored down the left flank.....and bring me my damn sandwich already!... Bread shall be sliced... Eggs shall be splintered... A ham..... AND THE WATER'S BOILIIIING ! ..... HAM ! (crowd) haaaam) .... HAAAM ! (crowd) HAAAAAAAM ...... HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM
Qué locura de películas.
So fucking good
'And fear no darkness'
what the hell were they expecting? "they're still charging Sarge, you said after we shot the arrows they'd stop! " don't get why they look so shocked that they're getting charged
The Rohirrim assembled on a stretch of elevated ground before the charge, so the orcs wouldn't have been able to see past the first line of cavalry to gage their number. The shock was realizing that their volleys weren't enough to stop the charge which consisted of far more men than they were capable of repelling. The terror was having no where to run since they were packed up against the other formations still besieging Minas Tirith.
Deaaaaaath!!!
I’m a man and I’m crying
Jokes on you you frontlined 3 rows of archers into a cavalry charge... Wtf did you expect?😂
I absolutely love this scene, the characters, and the subplays that follow. But I think the often overlooked element is that the new forces of darkness, the never ending orcs or zombies had been wiped out by the hobbits and the ents in the previous passage. Victory was possible because the forces that destroyed ecosystems and raised up new orcs/zombies had been neutralized or destroyed.
Ride now Theoden, and “DEATH!”
Um melhor filme que eu já assisti
These movies are perfection.
This is the fate of the wicked. Know it as truth.
I wonder if, anytime Peter Jackson needs a pick-me-up, he hops onto the ole ‘Tube to watch these clips and bathe in these comments
Forth! And fear no darkness!
Why are they charging without using their shields?
does anyone know the reason Theoden rides and knocks his blade on the spears of his men? is it a way of symbolically showing he's with his men? or maybe a final burst of inspiration?
+Sean Stark To show that it also will be with them.
He also will fight but is nonetheless inspiring too haha
i figured as much. now i want to look into see if stuff like this was done back in old wars
+Sean Stark remember if the king doesn't move, there is no reason for the people to follow.
Apparantly it was improvised by the actor playing Theoden.
Random orc at the left flank of the army: Thank the eye, the city will fall before I need to fight at all!
*sudden horn sounds*
It be like that sometimes.
I fucking love the Royal guards. Their armor's just so fucking epic.
One legendary battle! It would have been interesting to see how it would have gone if ghost army had not come, yes i now that pirates was coming but on other side they was foot army. Well I suppose that gondor had lose after a honorary battle.
