If you "grew up" with Tarja as the singer of Nightwish, there won't be a chance for anyone else. Floor is absolutely amazing, no doubt... but these old songs to me only fit with Tarja. They were composed for her opera voice. And it was an amazing combination... pure love!!!
Floor addressed the ending in her reaction to GLS at Wacken. Prior to her joining the band, when Tarja sang the song live (have a look at her performance of the song at End of an Era), she simply walked off stage, and let the band play out, which they played and ended it how you hear it now. The band loved it, so they wanted to try it in the show, which worked out well. From there, she worked on it to where it is now. There is a video out there called "The Evolution of Ghost Love Score", which focuses on the ending of the song from Floor's beginnings to where it is at now. It's definitely worth a look at.
The Floor’s performance is more powerful, but that’s not the meaning of this song. I remember the first Nightwish live show I went to. 18th February 2005 in Manchester, England, when I was 15. My friend who I went with and I were arguing about this song. I was insisting that the line was "if you be the one to cut me, then I'll bleed forever", and he was insisting the line was "you were the one to cut me, so now I'll bleed forever". Turns out we were both right, the line changes between the start and the end of the song.
It's hard to believe its been almost 20 years, I bought this album the day of release. This song blew my mind, its by, far the best one. Lol, yeah Tarja has some interesting pronunciations. You should hear her pronounce swords in Elvenpath, she really accents the "W" and its really cute.
You did not have to mention that this album is nearly 20 years old. I remember getting it & listening to it for the first time, already a Nightwish fan, and getting blown away by this track. Its still one of my favourite songs. And when I heard you say that you'd only heard Floor's live performance I thought you'd be surprised by how many million times better the studio version with Tarja is. Floor has a fantastic voice, but Tuomas wrote this album with Tarja's voice and range in mind and in my opinion the tracks written since Floor joined have been a way better fit for her voice. Tuomas really is an excellent composer and writer. I love his work both for Nightwish and his own solo projects.
One of the many cool things about this song is that the choruses are all in Bb, but the last one goes to F and gives such a mood to end the song. It's really a masterpiece, and to me Tarja really owns it. I'd like to see your reactions to the live version from the End Of An Era concert, it's such an emotional performance from the band. Cheers from Brazil!
Thanks a lot for the reaction. This studio version is my absolute favorite. When I discovered it, I listened to it over and over again, mesmerized by the music, choir and Tarja's voice. I didn't know anything about Nightwish at that time. I didn't even know the faces or names of the individual members. In the live version with Tarja, at the End of an Era concert, the chorus is just as strong. It was pushed into the background later, in the post Tarja era. The verses sung by the choir are beautiful and it's nice what you say about it, but even though Tarja sings this song, Tuomas wrote it, so those verses about bleeding heart would rather refer to him.
Maybe (some day) this song live "End Of An Era" -version? Or some other songs? Nightwish always much better in live! That last Nightwish concert with Tarja is really amazing! And every song has such an emotion! Thank you very much!
You were thinking exactly my thoughts. I have heard this song many times but it's always been the live version, the studio version Tarja's voice seems muted compared to the live version.
I've been NW fan for more than 20 years, and for me this is the Best composition of Tuomas. I feel that this is the Best NW song. When i heard it for the first time blews my mind. I love Tarja.
So pumped to see Doug reacting to older Nightwish stuff! I'd love to see him react to their older ballads like Walking in the air, Sleeping sun (end of an era) or the Riddler.
Happy to see you checked the original version. I definitely recommend you to check live version of this song with Tarja from End of an Era DVD. Thats by far the best live version of this song ever. Its simply magical.
I was in my late teens when this came out, and I remember hammering that CD, and this being my favorite song for easily 5 years. And then later on when I saw the Wacken version, it reignited my love for this piece. Incredible!
I bought this cd when it was realeased and put it in cd player of my car - and drove couple of hours mesmerized listening it. Saw the live 2007 and it was a unforgettable gig. Thanks for the reaction!
I know Floor sings it great live but the haunting sound of Traja voice suits the song better. You really feel her give her blood, life, and soul up for a loved one. It just tears your heart out like no other musical piece does.
One of my favorite songs. I love the theatricality and the lead vocalists have been incredible. I get chills as their voices glide over the choral background.
I remember when I heard this song for the first time. My friend gave me whole Nightwish discography with bootlegs. Like 4 CDs full of mp3. So I'm deep into the night, lying on my bed, skipping songs looking for stuff that I like, but slowly falling asleep. And then I heard this, at first I didn't like it but 4 minutes later I was crying. It was just a waterfall of pure beauty that I didn't expect. And here I am 20 years later - and whenever I hear this song I have to shed a tear. It's just... something. And there's only one thing better than this song - it's the same sound but in DTS surround sound. It's also something else... That and Judas Priest's Painkiller album is just something that will always be in my heart.
The Wacken version is legendary and my favorite version but I do really appreciate the original recording since you can hear certain instrumentation and choral vocals much more clearly than the live version. Floor was the one who decided to add the big note at the end and it was an amazing choice as it really puts the punctuation on this epic song.
@@gregoryprodanas7295 No way, personally I prefer the version shot in South America to that of Wacken. It's been a long time since I heard the original (studio) and I don't think Tarja's voice was forward enough in the mix tbh. Everyone has their own favourite vocalist, some prefer Anette even. (I do for at least 4 tracks over Floor.)
Oh my goodness, Mr. Helvering! I, for whatever reason, have not been seeing your analysis videos. Must say, I thoroughly enjoy your breakdowns and appreciation and explanations❣️ Thank you so much ❤ Nightwish is very new to me but have fallen "head over heels" for the brilliance that is Nightwish!!
Oh yeah, Floor does that belting at the end and it sounds amazing. However, when I hear this version with the choir behind it's just better without belting so that we can hear the choir and words.
GLS is absolutely the centrepiece track, but that entire album is utterly sublime. Make sure you hear the whole thing. There is not a weak track, not even a weak moment, on the entire thing.
Although I love the Wacken version, I have never heard the original studio version. After listening to it, I really appreciate the orchestration and choir which are more prominent in this one. I love it! Thanks Doug.
It's one of hose songs where you loved it with Tarja, before listening to Floor thinking that's better and then ends going back to Tarja because her singing suits the songs theme best.
If Tarja came up with the beautiful vocal melodies, that deserves massive credit. Floor is unreal and she can add on the foundations of an already great melody.
Thank you! This was very interesting! I love how loud the instruments are on this studio version. Though, vocally I prefer the live version from End of an Era with Tarja (and the one from Wacken 2013). I love Tarja's dark tone. It intriques me. Her voice is very unique. Nowadays, Tarja's voice has matured a lot. She has even more darker side to her voice and she use a lot more of her chest voice. Right now, she is touring South-America with Marko (the ex-bassist of Nightwish). They are friends again and they released a song together last week called Left On Mars. I would love to hear your thoughts about it. I think it's a great song! About Tarja's pronounciation: Back when this was recorded, she sometimes still had a quite a thick Finnish accent. I always thought Ghost Love Score was about unrequited love or a failed relationship. Tuomas wrote this and there has been a ruomour going around for years that he wrote songs about Tarja and this was one of them. That he wrote about his love for her.... who knows I love these lyrics. In the first choruses they are: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you If you are the one to cut me Then I'll bleed forever" Then for the last part it changes to: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you You were the one to cut me So I'll bleed forever" Simply, a masterpiece.
Loved seeing you experience the same kind of joy and amazement I associated with this version of the song. Like with Disturbed - kudos for going back. 😊
I like this version more than the one with the belting and growling, this style of singing makes more sense with the symphonic elements. More symphonic, less metal, I prefer that
There's a male vocal cover by contra-tenor power metal singer Yiannis Papadopoulos. I think you should check it out too. He also did the siren by nightwish and the band actually performed it live with him when they were on tour last year.
I recommend you listen to solo Tarja too, she has some killer tracks! I'd go with "Undertaker" for the symphonic sound or "Falling Awake" for the heavy metal vibes.
Beautiful ,being both a fan of Nightwish and the Moody Blues I can't but help see the similarities between Ghost love Score and Days of Future Past orchetral parts! Bravo!
I’ve literally heard this song 100+ times, however this is the first time hearing the original with Tarja. Not going to get into who does it better as that is a personal choice. What I will say is that it’s still has that same impact. Floor has said that she was fooling around with that ending and the band heard it and said to include that into the song. So she makes this her version, instead of an exact copy of original. Still a great song regardless who’s singing it. ❤️🤘🎸🎻🦘
ALL hale the REAL TRUE QUEEN 👑 of NIGHTWISH and of ALL FEMALE SYMPHONIC METAL SINGERS!!!, the very beautiful looking and very unique voice of the enchanting TARJA!!!😀👍👍🤘
The versions are different in a good way. The more symphonic original version has the orchestra and choir more prominent. Tarja’s voice floats above the rest at the end. Floor’s version is scaled back some and they adjusted it for her voice. All great stuff.
I’ve been into a lot of Prog Rock/Metal over the years. Symphonic Metal has always been a hit or miss for me. Nightwish/Tarja are definitely bands I absolutely love. Ghost Love Score is a must for anyone who wants to hear a top notch Prog Metal Epic. Like many here I agree some of the live versions are better even though the studio version is already perfect. Tarja is my favorite singer. She really took Operatic Metal to its peak.
Started to listen NW when first album did come and it was one of my favorite bands for long but i had to stop listening new stuff after Tarja got fired. Tried to listen new stuff with Anette and Floor but it just wasnt the same so all i can fo is listen their old stuff. But im glad Tarja got back to sing NW stuff live with Marco, they sound so great together 😊
My youngest son said I might like this band, I had never heard of them, he tends more towards metal, me rock. He was a fan during the days of Tarja, I came on in 2020, and I favor Floor 100%. It's amazing the difference between this and the 2013 Wacken, in this the choir is more pronounced, IMO the 2013 Wacken recording is perhaps the best live performance EVER.
My go-to's of Ghost Love Score are Wacken Open Air (of course) and Buenos Aires 2012. It was great to have Doug pointing out features of this version -- and this singer -- that I'm not all that familiar with. 13:03 rhythmic chorus: It's very O Fortuna, isn't it? (Probably other places in the Carmina Burana too, but that's the one that comes to mind.) 13:46 Doug's disappointment at the fadeout: What @athlonen said!
You have plenty of material to go since 1996 -> and so many different songs....and line-ups. Check how they really started ...the most original ones too to get perspective. They changed this a bit later in gig shows specially the fading ending into scream ending. This is about love and here they want to bring up this feeling. Tuomas wrote this masterpiece in 2003 or so...being some 25 years young. Soon you find out where from Tuomas gets his inspiration and how it has changed by time.
The song was not about a relationship that failed, but one that could never be. Tuomas was writing for the love he had for a woman. The woman most likely being Tarja.
As amazing as the live version with Floor at Wacken is, it really isn't to the amazing production value of the studio version. I honestly believe Tarja's voice is more tailored to this song. That fact plus the mix and production makes it the superior version.
Tarja's too one note for the track. Her "adoring beast" part sounds comical after Floor's version where she actually pays attention to the lyrics. And the live ending with Floor elevated the song to a whole new level. I do like the access to the orchestrations and choirs on the album, though.
@@tuomaspuumalainen3018 That's one of the most beautiful things about music... it speaks to people in different ways. While you see Tarja as "too one note", I see her voice as perfect for the track as it blends seamlessly with the rest of the score. Floor's rendition, for my ears, is over-sung, as is a lot of her renditions. Some songs call for you to belt things out. To me, this is not one of them. And, luckily, we both have versions of this song that we feel is superior.
Another very impressive number would be how much it cost to produce the album. IIRC it cost around 250k $ to produce it, with well over 100k spend on the orchestral recordings. But this is also an album where I'd say that every single penny was a great investment, as this is one hell of an album.
I really love when you do this reactions, and I have asuggestion. Maybe you must to react to "The Poet and the Pendulum", but the orchestral version. Thank you for your NW reactions!
In the live performance from End of an Era each band member shines. Tarja's vocals were not mixed and muted like in the studio version, they are rich and dark and sorrowful. When she comes to the end of her part, she does not feel the need to belt and make it all about her, she simply and quietly leaves the stage so that the focus is on the band. The music builds and the choir is clearly heard. Sorry but for me THAT is the best version of this song!!!
You said that Tarja 'made the most' of her tone in this song. While Tarja was in the band, the songs were specifically written for her voice. I wish you had your keyboard for this one, the music theory and arrangement insights you give are the most interesting parts for me. Some of my favourite videos of yours are when you are in the church playing along to Opeth, the musical theory and analysis lessons in those are ace. Thanks for your videos.
It's the song that got me into Nightwish, and I've been a fan ever since. Tuomas is just a genius composer.
I wholly agree on your comment about Tomas, a genius! And sorely under recognized for his composing and arranging skills.

So pumped to see Doug reacting to older Nightwish stuff! I'd love to see him react to their older ballads like Walking in the air, Sleeping sun (end of an era) or the Riddler.
The production on Emppu's guitar solo in this recording reminds me of the guitar sound Mike Oldfield used for his Tubular Bells albums.
I absolutely LOVE Jukka's outro drumming in this song! I miss him in the band. ...one of my favorite drummers.
Jukka was super energetic. Unstoppable power in every move.
Happy to see you checked the original version. I definitely recommend you to check live version of this song with Tarja from End of an Era DVD. Thats by far the best live version of this song ever. Its simply magical.
Yay! Now you will listen better the music and the orchestra especially at the ending which is my favorite part!
It's a great song! Without exaggeration it's a masterpiece.
I was in my late teens when this came out, and I remember hammering that CD, and this being my favorite song for easily 5 years. And then later on when I saw the Wacken version, it reignited my love for this piece. Incredible!
I saw them live with Tarja. Unforgettable, still a favourite memory
Just listen to the whole album!!
I just did again. The remastered 2001 version.
The interesting part about Wacken 2013 version with Floor is that Floor pretty much sang all the choir parts, too, plus the extra singing at the end.
I bought this cd when it was realeased and put it in cd player of my car - and drove couple of hours mesmerized listening it. Saw the live 2007 and it was a unforgettable gig. Thanks for the reaction!
Kudos to Legendary Producer Pip Williams for arranging the Orchestral and Choral Parts. He did previously produce Status Quo and The Moody Blues.
I know Floor sings it great live but the haunting sound of Traja voice suits the song better. You really feel her give her blood, life, and soul up for a loved one. It just tears your heart out like no other musical piece does.
Please listen to Creek Mary's Blood from this album. The most beautiful Nightwish song ever in my opinion
Yessss! This will forever be my favourite Nightwish song. 💖
Ghost Love Score is the most beautiful song I have ever heard :D
The Wacken version is legendary and my favorite version but I do really appreciate the original recording since you can hear certain instrumentation and choral vocals much more clearly than the live version. Floor was the one who decided to add the big note at the end and it was an amazing choice as it really puts the punctuation on this epic song.
I was going to write exactly that!
the end of an era version with Tarja is THE definitive version and quite possibly the definitive Nightwish song IMHO
@@gregoryprodanas7295 it is an excellent version. There’s something about their live performances that elevate all their songs to the next level.
Stop saying that Floor's versions of Tarja songs is better. Floor is just a pop singer, nothing more.
I looove this song! And I love live version from End of An Era with Tarja even more!
Thanks for the reaction! Waiting for more!
Oh yeah, Floor does that belting at the end and it sounds amazing. However, when I hear this version with the choir behind it's just better without belting so that we can hear the choir and words.
I love this version. The dark and melancolic Tarja s voice, the dramatic Choir in the end. A melody Tarja made a masterpiece ❤
GLS is absolutely the centrepiece track, but that entire album is utterly sublime. Make sure you hear the whole thing. There is not a weak track, not even a weak moment, on the entire thing.
Your going to love this soooo much
Holy crap, that means Ive been here for almost 700 Episodes! Amazing
Although I love the Wacken version, I have never heard the original studio version. After listening to it, I really appreciate the orchestration and choir which are more prominent in this one. I love it! Thanks Doug.
Same here.
But she didn't
You have to check the original live version from the concert *Nightwish - Ghost Love Score from End of an Era concert* Tarja is very powerful live.
First time listen.Stunning.🎉
That he wrote about his love for her.... who knows
I love these lyrics. In the first choruses they are:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
If you are the one to cut me
Then I'll bleed forever"
Then for the last part it changes to:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me
So I'll bleed forever"
Simply, a masterpiece.
Doug you need to react to this whole album. It’s a masterpiece.
Loved seeing you experience the same kind of joy and amazement I associated with this version of the song.
Like with Disturbed - kudos for going back. 😊
I like this version more than the one with the belting and growling, this style of singing makes more sense with the symphonic elements. More symphonic, less metal, I prefer that
Great work as always and a powerful song 🦦🇸🇪
There's a male vocal cover by contra-tenor power metal singer Yiannis Papadopoulos. I think you should check it out too. He also did the siren by nightwish and the band actually performed it live with him when they were on tour last year.
I recommend you listen to solo Tarja too, she has some killer tracks! I'd go with "Undertaker" for the symphonic sound or "Falling Awake" for the heavy metal vibes.
We need you to do an interview with Tuomas - a long one, talking about song writing, orchestral arrangements, lyrical themes, etc. 🙏
Beautiful ,being both a fan of Nightwish and the Moody Blues I can't but help see the similarities between Ghost love Score and Days of Future Past orchetral parts! Bravo!
Your analyses are fantastic! I would love to hear your thoughts on The Siren by Nightwish from their End of an Era concert. 🎶
You keep reviewing all my favorite bands, I love it!
Thanks Doug, I know may people love Floor live version, which I love too, but the studio version is just impeccable!
I would love to watch a Doug's reaction on "For the heart I once had" with Anette, that fits perfectly on that song and it's piano based. 🙏🏻🎹
And Cadence of Her Last Breath.
You can see her live in "End of an Era"
My youngest son said I might like this band, I had never heard of them, he tends more towards metal, me rock. He was a fan during the days of Tarja, I came on in 2020, and I favor Floor 100%. It's amazing the difference between this and the 2013 Wacken, in this the choir is more pronounced, IMO the 2013 Wacken recording is perhaps the best live performance EVER.
Same here, my son gave me three songs, this Ever Dream and Bless the Child.....I was sold after GLS. Fan forever.
you can also listen to "Ghost Love Score" Orchestral Version ... -> th-cam.com/video/dyxiCAsoL5g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_HJVkSBQJ1WBn2gQ
(Probably other places in the Carmina Burana too, but that's the one that comes to mind.)
13:46 Doug's disappointment at the fadeout: What @athlonen said!
My friends. Let us all do an Epic Maneuver in celebration.
Heavy Metal was never a boring Music , i got this Album at home
I love your Absolute pitch ^^
Floor's ability to bring different styles and power to the different parts takes an already great song to another level...
My favorite version is the end of an era version!! 🫶🏽🔥
We Finnish people many tend to love prog and heavy rock.
Please please try Epica! Look for Cry for the moon!! They do it so great as well!! You will enjoy for sure!
You should listen to Stratovarius, another epic band from Finland ⚜️ !!
Together with Sonata Arctica. Their first albums are pure gold.
Great reaction! You should to listen to orchestral version ob this song. Its amazing too!
The song was not about a relationship that failed, but one that could never be. Tuomas was writing for the love he had for a woman. The woman most likely being Tarja.
By the way, have you done Wishmaster? Really love Tarja's voice on that one.
Master Helvering, listen to them from "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", with Floor singing .... totally another "Story" 😉
Live for when you want to rock and album for when you want to chill with headphones.
This Album is a Masterpiece!!! i highly recommend u Creek Mary's Blood, from this album too, such a beautiful song!
A new Nightwish album is coming out!
the best Version for me is the live performance in buenos aires with Floor. Fu.... Hell :> you should give it a try
I prefer Tarja's studio version but I agree that particular performance with Floor is even better than Wacken's
I really love when you do this reactions, and I have asuggestion. Maybe you must to react to "The Poet and the Pendulum", but the orchestral version. Thank you for your NW reactions!
Just had to say the section starting at 9:55 has birthed some of the best memes in internet history
I am totally with you on this. My favorite version too
You said that Tarja 'made the most' of her tone in this song.
