When I was in the pass it was a two lain road no guard rails and “ driver at your own risk “. Wow how time changes things doesn’t look like fun anymore boring.
I live in Central Texas, I drive Wolf Creek Pass around 5 times a year during all four seasons. Summer/early fall are good. If you don’t trust your ability it drive, don’t do it in the winter. I drove it during a white out, it was scary for sure. About 3 miles into it, I came along the snow plow truck. I kept my eyes on his amber safety lights and followed him all the way down heading east to west. It was a life saver. Skiers will risk their life just to go skiing.
Thanks for this video information. I’m planning on heading to Masa Verda in Nov and had planned on doing I-40 so as to avoid this route. After watching your video and narrative I feel I’m choosing the correct route. The extra time/mileage is not really an issue for me, safety and relaxing however are always high on my list.
We'll be doing this same one in the same direction in about 2 weeks. Looks like a cake walk to some of the other stuff we've done in Colorado and earlier this year! LOL! Thanks, again, for the video of it!
I liked that video and it was nice scenery even though it liked line it was raining. Thank you fir that video. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. Sherri Weber
When you stop going up near the top to look or rest, leave your engine running so the fan will cool the engine. I found it you shut it off the heat build up from all the work your engine has done, it might overheat.
Would be nice if there were more videos like these. I'm heading to Tahoe from Henderson NV next week and keep looking at Google maps street view to see if I can find the grade in all of the passes I need to take. Do you know of any good resources for finding that info?
It's hard. We use an app called inRoute trip planner. It isn't perfect, and it's a monthly subscription, but it gives you grades, and an estimation of 'curviness'
Made the wolf going west to east earlier this year in an older class B pulling a small car on a tow dolly. 25 mph all the way to the top. If you are going east to west then the 25 mph speed limits should not be ignored, that hairpin turn on the downside run is a genuine truck killer. Use lower gears and have good brakes. Beautiful scenery no matter which direction you are going.
That’s it alright. I was born just to the East in Del Norte and have made several pilgrimages back over over the years. People are more familiar with the Pass than the town when I describe where I was born😉
Liked the video with explanations ahead of time. With time lapse, it looks like you’re moving very fast. It would be helpful if you showed your average or actual MPH during time lapse scenes.
West to East I hear is easier. It is East to West that is harder on the brakes. Most the wrecks happen due to brake failure East to West due to the fact it is 9 miles down hill versus going up it 9 miles which does nothing to the brakes so obviously you have less brake going down as I think that is half the distance of using the brakes. I went up Teton Pass in a 2014 Ram 1500 pulling 5500 lbs. TT. That was an extreme adventure with many switch backs at 10% grade. However, not as long as wolf creek pass. HWY 17 to 64 in New Mexico is the better option.
Not nearly as bad as C. W. McCall made it out to be. :-) Based on your video, I don't see any problem with it. I haven't driven Wolf Creek pass, but I did drive the Million Dollar Highway south through Ouray. It was in a car, though, not a motor home.
We drove wolf Creek Pass east to west this past September with a 2015 Ford Escape towing a travel trailer. We had no problem heading down , manually shifted into 3rd gear only needing to tap the brakes every so often to keep under 45 mph. I would much rather be driving down the pass instead of up.
Former stepson and I stopped to play in 12" of snow along that route ... in the middle of JUNE, 1990. Looks like they added many miles of guardrail. I recall thinking someone could go over the edge and never be found along most that route. BTW, they changed the route number a few years back ... used to be Rt. 666.
@@RVMiles Highway 550 from Durango to Montrose is a real nail biter. Even in a Ford escape with no trailer. I dont know how some folks pull or drive a camper through there.
Thank you! I live in CA and have been full timing for decades but after a 3rd TBI I have issues driving “on the edge” or where there are steep drops and little to no guardrails. I grew up back east driving in the snow but not in my c class and not while towing my 9k trailer Have you driven to Alimosa or Wild Horse Mesa? My truck is an ‘02 GMC 2500HD 4x4, 8.1 Vortec with Alison transmission with a tow capacity of 12K.
You mentioned that the transmission temperature will climb during the uphill ascent. How high did your trans temp get? I've seen mine go up 195 on my 2012 Ram 3500 SWR pulling a 13,000 pound 5th wheel and have been told that the temp was ok.
We didn't realize what we were driving until it was over. Wow! That was some tense and slow driving. We should have disconnected our towed vehicle from our Class C and made it easier on us. Beautiful however
Probably from Artesia to Alamogordo in NM or the road up to Rimforest from San Bernardino in CA in fog so thick we couldn't see anything. Also did Vail pass in CO as a teenager in a snowstorm! Weather obviously plays a big role.
The condenced video reminded me of the "other" hit by C.W. McCall called Wolf Creek Pass. Actually, the video is scarier than the song. th-cam.com/video/1Ru4VmdoOa4/w-d-xo.html
Have you driven Wolf Creek Pass? How'd it go? Thanks for watching and don't forget to give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel!

A few times. Sad to see the trees last time I went over about three years ago.

Hwy 50, Monarch Pass, is another southerly option. Montrose to Poncha Springs/Salida
Try Red Mountain Pass from Ouray to Silverthorne two lanes no guard rails huge drop offs that will pucker you...

I took my gas motorhome through there I had no troubles. Beautiful drive.
Great video, thanks. Was it just me or did all the cars seem to be in a hurry? Lol

Beautiful scenery!
Great video. Thanks!
I’ve been in South Fork all summer and have to take the pass to get to Pagosa Springs. Great ride.

I also lived in and grew in the Big D. I have also been up and down and over the pass many times.

Went down and around and around and down
We run outta ground at the edge of town
Bashed into the side of a feed store
In downtown Pagosa Springs

Haha. Even though I know the video is going faster than you drove, the downhill portion of the video stressed me out! :-)
Me too!

Annnnd The next morning after commenting, your podcast was about 550. How funny. I bet it was fun in the Ram as well. Love your Podcasts and Vids!

how is it conspired to route 14 in WY though the big horn mountains. we did that in 2017.

Very pretty views but the time lapse kind of made me dizzy with all the S curves. Thanks for sharing.
Colorado mountain range resembles the Ural Mountains in Russia, namely in the area of Zlatoust, Satka and Yuryuzan
You’re so smart :)
I have heard drop offs are worse in virginia
You said this wasn’t the worst pass you ever drove - which one was?
