Are longer jail sentences necessary to deter such crimes? Let us know what you think in the comments!

These money launderes could not have done it for so long without being noticed or attracting suspicion. The question is were those suspicion suppressed by those who ought to have raised those suspicion because of greed?

Chinese money fleeing from the grip of CCP is finding refuge in Singapore, which with wide open arms welcomes the Chinese rich & even notorious?
The reputed watertight regulations of Singapore are no more that. The authorities should look into the system to weed out any corrupt officials (if any).

Laundering has been a historical activity tolerated in the island state since the 70s with Indonesians being the major party where the activity was carried out as above board like in retail business and property investment. Current exposure and clamp down is politically motivated under influence from China. Sg is not a squeaky clean state but a sophisticated mafia state learning from Hong Kong and Japan amongst others.

This one I definitely agree with you. From these cases and many others, it shows that criminals and fugutives from a certain barbarous big country are given very special discounts when punishments are concerned because the govt is so afraid of having offended their govt.

For your info, these money launderers were already closely monitored for quite sometime. Is just a matter of arresting them with sufficient evidence otherwise every thing went futile.

That’s the official explanation. This case shook the financial industry and created a big impact including reputation risks. Financial institutions have a few levels of defences to stop fraud and money laundering at the doorstep and not let them in and then let the police deal with it later. Financial institutions have to bear reputational risk and criminal charges if they are negligent. There are certainly gaps in our governance. The government even have to defend the allegations that they acted only upon the request and information given by China.

However, take a look at the prison terms that these criminals were given, they gave the public an impression that our law against money laundering was designed more to encourage rather than to deter such crime, despite the authorities frequent claims that our govt has ZERO TOLERANCE against money laundering activities. this is really a joke and insult to the legal and justice system. Coffee shop talks have it that such super lenient prison terms were given due to the country of origin of all these criminals.
