Cutting Carbon Fiber on the MPCNC (Mostly Printed CNC) - Quadcopter Frame

  • I built a water bath for the MPCNC (Mostly Printed CNC) to cut carbon fiber parts. The first piece was a test piece to check if it even works. I cut a pocket to check the fiber direction underneath the top layer of the carbon fiber sheet. The main part I wanted to cut was the FPV Toothpick frame at the end from Dave_C FPV.

    Hey. Erstmal danke für dein Video. Es beruhigt mich schon mal zu sehen das Carbon mit der mpcnc funktioniert. Habe bisher kein anderes Video gesehen.
    Welche Fräsertypen (Firma) nutzt du für Carbon und Aluminium ?
    Also rein um Bauteile wie Frames auszufräsen?

    • @Quadropus
      @Quadropus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, danke für das Feedback.
      Ich nutze Fräser von Sorotec (Größe 1/8"). Diese sind recht günstig und scheinen gut zu fräsen. Ich nutze 1 und 2 Schneider mit Upcut in 2mm und 3mm für Alu und Kunststoffe und 2mm und 3mm diamantverzahnte für Carbon.

    Nice work! It's funny. That's the exact frame I want to cut with my MPCNC and this will be my first attempt at cutting carbon fiber. I just need to build a bath with some way of holding the carbon sheet in place. Did you end up building the rest of the quad?

      Hey, yes I did! You can check my Instagram and see the final build.

    This is interesting because I am thinking about replacing some aluminum parts on the X axis of my Tevo Tarantula Pro. Is the water bath the best option over vacuum extraction?

    • @Quadropus
      @Quadropus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, I think the water bath is the safest solution regarding health. I don’t know how well the vacuum filtration works and I can imagine that not all particles are caught. Thus, primarily for the safety, I used the water bath.

    So I am about to do the same thing. I need to cut out some CF frames for my T-Rex 600E RC helicopter. I'm just curious how much splatter of CF you saw even with using the water? Reason I ask is my machine is set up in the floor beside my desk and I'm worried about getting CF everywhere. I figured the water would cut down on it a lot, but I noticed you showed your controller which looked like it had bits of CF splatter on it. I noticed later that you added a makeshift dust shoe around the spindle. How much more did that help?

    • @Quadropus
      @Quadropus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, the splatter you saw on my controller was CF dust trapped inside water droplets. I can not make out any pure CF dust when using the water path. The "dust shoe" removed all the splatter I had while cutting with the water bath.

    Use a vibrating saw/multi tool or a rotary disc to cut the tabs that are holding the parts.

    • @Quadropus
      @Quadropus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should have done that, but I only used the tabs on the test part.
      The carbon fiber sheet was sticked on the foam with double sided tape and I did not use tabs on the quadcopter frame.

    Moin wie hast du das Wasserbad gebaut? Baue meine mpcnc grade zusammen. Welchen Fremden nutzt du da?

    • @Quadropus
      @Quadropus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Das Wasserbad ist eine 12mm starke MDF Platte mit Kunststoffbeschichtung. Für die Wände habe ich 40mm breite Kunststoffprofile benutzt, welche an die Seiten geschraubt wurden. Abgedichtet wurde es mit Silikon. Das Wasserbad wurde dann mit doppelseitigem Klebeband auf die MDF Platte der MPCNC geklebt.
