Marilyn almost resented her beauty. She felt it made her a joke. Many, many close friends would go on to say that MM did not care for fashion nor beauty. And this is backed up by the fact that Marilyn never owned any designer clothes nor make up. When Marilyn wasn't working she would not wear make up and would go days without washing her hair. She wore slacks and shirts. All her glam was provided by the studio because she was contractually obligated to appear beautiful during promotion tours and premieres. When her Seven Year Itch images were being plastered everywhere she is noted to have said, "That's what I am to people. That's what they think of me. A joke. Big breasts, big ass - big deal. I want to be more." I think it was her security blanket to be beautiful, but I doubt she ever really cared. Her home had more books than clothes, shoes, accessories, and make up combined.
celifacejones I’m a big MM fan and I agree with what you say but she does own a lot of designer clothes and base on her receipts she kept, she splurges a lot on high end stuff especially cosmetics and clothing.
Larry O Most of what she owned was given to her or sent to her. She rarely purchased make up or clothing. Near the end, she bought some Pucci and designer clothes - but they were purchased for photo shoots (specifically for the Allan Grant and George Barris shoot - she also rented an upscale house for that shoot). Throughout the 50s, MM lived in apartments and anything glam was provided by the studio. Even her make up kit was make up she had acquired through make up artists (mostly Snyder). When her belongings were itemized she had very few real jewels - most were costume jewelry pieces on hand from the studio. The only thing I can think of MM actually splurged on was perfume.
celifacejones I see, yeah there were a lot of receipts for items such as Ferragamo and Pucci so it looks that way and she bought things in multiples. I know she is a simple girl at heart like the slacks in the life magazine shoot she had for years before she was even famous but some reports claim she spent a lot as she’s always either in debt or breaking even so maybe it was all business expenses like beauty upkeep and fancy wardrobes.
Larry O Simple girl, but also notoriously underpaid. Even during GPB she was making a weekly salary of a contract player with no dressing room while Jane Russell made hundreds of thousands. It was Russell that convinced MM to stand up for herself. Even still, compared to the millions her peers were making, MM was one of the most underpaid stars of her time.
celifacejones yeah that is true and also the most mistreated. Heard a story that she was at a party and someone pulled her top down exposing her and she just laughed it off. Her life was tragic.
Well done! It should be noted that they recently found out Marilyn's make up routine actually took hours with many steps still a secret. She was THE make up artist; she knew how to make herself look "perfect". I'd love to see you try Mae West!
Do Elizabeth Taylor because she always had great skin and look flawless yet she had a lot of surgeries and suffered from back pain. It'll cool to see the contrast
Longtime Marilyn fan here, I’ve read 100s of books about her. What I think is Marilyn knew she was beautiful, but she thought her allure was more coming from her body and her sexuality. She created “Marilyn” as a cover for Norma Jean. The cover had to be perfect and she did a lot to keep it perfect, but I don’t think she enjoyed it. Many say she would go without makeup and wouldn’t even wash her hair for days when she wasn’t working.
Spring Flowers Not washing your hair isn’t a lack of hygiene. It’s a known fact that it’s good not to wash your hair every day since it strips too much of your natural oils. Depending on hair type and length, one should only wash it every other day to every two to three days minimum.
Maliha Intikhab Jackie would not care that much.she was a trophy wife.in her words she got her opinions from her husband.she just needed a rich important man.
If people enjoy this video, Lisa Eldridge who Mi-Anne was referencing, has done a lot of icon related make up tutorials videos on her channel such as this Marilyn Monroe look, Princess Diana, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn. Plus she does tutorials for older women, teenagers, people struggling with acne, rosacea, skin changes due to the menopause. She's a make up champion!
Lisa Elridge's video on Marilyn's makeup is fabulous. She gives so much detail about the makeup, as well as Marilyn and Whitey. One of my favorite videos to rewatch
Marilyn also used to put a dab of white shadow on the centre of her lips to enhance the full look and create dimension. Additionally, she would put a tiny dot of red eyeliner (or lip liner) near her tear-ducts/inner eye corners because the red colour made the whites of her eyes pop. Kind of disappointed you didn't include those.
I was watching a video of a ballet dancer doing her makeup for a performance a few days ago and she did the red dot in the outer corner of the eye. I had never even heard of this before
She would put some dark mascara or eyeliner underneath her eyes so it looked like her eye lashes were creating a shadow because they were so heavy and long
I love Marilyn and her story. I’m so glad more people are starting to be more interested in learning more about her person on top of the obsession with her movie star persona and sex icon status. She was so complicated and surprisingly relateable. She constantly struggled with depression and feeling unloved, even at the height of her fame. She divorced her first husband so she could pursue a film career, but spent it longing for a family she was never able to have with any of her three husbands. She was constantly fighting to be taken seriously as an actor, but all anyone paid for was her blonde bimbo act, so she used interviews to flex how smart and witty she really was.
I think this is very close to the original. However, excuse my observation but, Im fairly certain (source- my grandmothers exact copy of this fashionable then look) that the eyeliner she applied on the lower lashline was just a slightly V line on the outer corner going outwards in the shape of the shadow of her upper eyelashes.. The rest of the brown eyeliner was applied inside the waterline and with a slight touch of pearly white eyeshadow underneath on the middle of the eye bags. The brushes used at the time were all extremely delicate and pointy. Her look was all about precision and pearly white clean shine!
she really does look like marilyn but with her own little flare. they are both STUNNING, i dont think ive seen anyone pull off marilyn as much as she does. drop dead gorgeous!
So glad you guys paid some attention to who she was as a person in this video! Her pop culture image has spread a vastly oversimplified understanding of her and what her life was like, effectively erasing all her struggles and some of her triumphs. Great job, would love to see another similar video!
I've seen many people trying to do the Marylin look but because of their facial and bone structure it always looked fake, but on you GIRL you really rock it!
I love this video...the questions the interviewer asks are really deep and well-thought-out. I especially loved when the guest brought up if Marilyn Monroe empowered women or if she makes them sad. Marilyn Monroe's story proves that you could be considered one of the most beautiful women, but you still can have insecurities just like everyone else.
Refinery29 and Mi, I can't get enough! More than just a beauty magazine, you're so smart and do your research and then are able to deliver fun and insightful projects that feed my heart and soul! I'm a beauty junky, I used to be ashamed to say, but you guys are just SO SMART with everything you do! When I'm feeling blah, I search your articles out on Snapchat and it makes me feel right as rain. Keep doing what you do, because you're all so good at it! When people are passionate about what they do, it shows! I appreciate it!
I'm going to see West Side Story in less than a week so I'm definitely going to use this as my makeup inspiration! Also, would love to see Twiggy's makeup routine!!!
I appreciate your message at the beginning about the flashing lights! I don't have to worry for myself, but my mother is epileptic and extremely sensitive to flashing lights, thank you for the warning!
I loved this. I'd love to see a series on this idea, through out the years and different Icons through the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and so forth. I think it could really take off!
I drew a little portrait of Marilyn last year for my art class and now I have figured out why half of her eye was a bit darker. Must’ve been the iconic half lashes she had on
Excellent ! I love the fact that you did so much research on Marilyn ! Thank you so much for creating this wonderful documentary and tutorial ! Many blessings !
I was in an exhibition by Marilyn Monroe. I really saw everything personal she had. Even her face mask, which you showed in the video. The great thing is that I got to know her personality.❤️✨🦋
It came out beautifully. I appreciate the care you took to learn more about her beauty and hopefully learned even more about her as a person. While i know some about Norma Jeane and Marilyn, I learned a lot more in the comments section. Thank you all.
LOOOVE AND ADMIRE MARILYN AND ITS SO SAD THAT SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT THERE ISNT MORE TO HER THAN BEAUTY BECAUSE SHE WAS SUCH A COURAGEOUS TALENTED BEAUTIFUL WOMAN 😍😍🤩🤩
Mi! You are just phenomenal. I loooooved this video- I watch a heck of a lot of beauty videos, but goodness gracious- there’s just something so truly genuine about you. You put your heart and soul into this, girl....but still seem so relatable. Like we could be friends. Way to go, dear. Way to go.
Erno Laszlo please bring back the shake it Make up! I miss it so much. I have been using your products for years and absolutely love them! But I miss the Makeup line. Best wishes!
Erno Laszlo I'm sorry to hear this. But I do understand! Thank you so much for the update! I still have a bottle from 7 years ago i accidentally purchased the wrong color. It will be saved and put on display in my bathroom with the rest of my Laszlo collection 😉
I have been a life long admirer of Marilyn. I like that you took the time for research. I have read more that 12 books about Marilyn. I have traveled day long tours of Marilyn's life and places that she has lived, visited her final place of resting. I like that you mentioned Guerlain and Erno Lazlo. They are my favorites still to date. Marilyn was brilliant, self taught with a high IQ.
Jackie O, Queen Victoria, Audrey Hepburn, twiggy, meg Ryan in the 90s, Queen Elizabeth in the 40s or princess Margaret, grace Kelly, Diana Ross, Beyoncé
Watching the finished product that Mi-Anne Chan created I can admit that it didn't show glamour and beauty akin to Marilyn. It showed that and much more. How can a women look better than Marilyn, Mi-Anne did it.
WOW - I just noticed the little warning at the start about the flashing lights! I am epileptic, and though I am not that light sensitive, I totally appreciate you putting the warning there! There are some videos sometimes, where I think it would do good to give a warning. Especially those flashy cut effects that a lot of beauty gurus use! Thanks for thinking that far!!! :)
What other famous figure's beauty routine would you like to see Mi-Anne follow? Leave your suggestions in the comments!
Refinery29 the Kardashians
Refinery29 love youu
Refinery29 I’m so inspired
Refinery29 Audrey Hepburn
Refinery29 I love marlyn Monroe
I love how dedicated you were to more than just the routine but to Marilyn and who she was as a person.
+gretchen, stoptryingtomakefetchhappen So glad you appreciate the small details!!
agreed!

+marielvazquez OOH, interesting!!
This isn’t Elizabeth Taylor but Hedy Lamarr.

+edie Thanks for sharing!!
Did the lack hygiene start with the drug use?
I could see that. The way those hairdos would prob take forever to make. Plus sure the girl needed a break
Spring Flowers Not washing your hair isn’t a lack of hygiene. It’s a known fact that it’s good not to wash your hair every day since it strips too much of your natural oils. Depending on hair type and length, one should only wash it every other day to every two to three days minimum.
Edie yup
She would have been the most pretty grandma if she were alive.
I wonder if Jackie and Marilyn ever bumped into each other at the Erno Laszlo institute.
It would of made for great gossip if they did!! 😯😯😯😆😆😆
Maliha Intikhab Jackie would not care that much.she was a trophy wife.in her words she got her opinions from her husband.she just needed a rich important man.
Maliha Intikhab I’m pretty sure Jackie answered one if not a few of Marilyn’s calls to the Kennedys and attempted to reassure her
Katarina M I’m sure she thought much more highly of herself.
Katarina M she evolved over time she became a much stronger and independent woman when her husband was killed
Please do Audrey Hepburn! She was such an amazing woman!❤️love this video❤️
Riley Phares yasss
Riley Phares YES PLZ AUDREEEYYYYY
Jackie too!!!
Yesss Audreyyy
Yes, I was hoping for this one too
I love how you just didn't focus on her outer beauty but also her beauty within her. She is indeed a strong woman despite what she went through.

I was waiting for the red eyeliner trick too

margaritanoir condolence
Would you do Brigitte Bardot next please??
she really does look like marilyn but with her own little flare. they are both STUNNING, i dont think ive seen anyone pull off marilyn as much as she does. drop dead gorgeous!
She actually liked her facial "fuzz" because she said it made her skin look like it was glowing on camera.
Please do cleopatra! I’ve always wanted to know about all her natural beauty routines :)
So glad you guys paid some attention to who she was as a person in this video! Her pop culture image has spread a vastly oversimplified understanding of her and what her life was like, effectively erasing all her struggles and some of her triumphs. Great job, would love to see another similar video!
I loved that you actually researched before you did this. It was very accurate
Please do Audrey Hepburn next! Please please please ❤️
Mi-Anne I’d love to see Nancy Kwan’s beauty routine. She was the first mainstream Asian beauty icon and is never really spoken about today.
THANK YOU for the flashing lights warning! 🙏🏻😭 It’s so rare to get one on TH-cam, but so so so important ❤️
Do Marie Antionette!!
+amelia OOH, good one!
I've seen many people trying to do the Marylin look but because of their facial and bone structure it always looked fake, but on you GIRL you really rock it!

+thelazyartist This is the best news we've had all morning! ;)
The bottom eyeliner shadow thing is actually genius and I'm about to start doing that .
Wow this was way more informative than I expected ✨💕💕
I appreciate your message at the beginning about the flashing lights! I don't have to worry for myself, but my mother is epileptic and extremely sensitive to flashing lights, thank you for the warning!

Love this!! I would love to see Audrey Hepburn or Jackie O!
+rheannahazelet Great suggestions!!
Damn, she did a really good job recreating the look!
I drew a little portrait of Marilyn last year for my art class and now I have figured out why half of her eye was a bit darker. Must’ve been the iconic half lashes she had on
Finally a makeup tip I haven’t heard of before!!! The faux eyelash shadow on the lower lash line, I’m definitely gonna try it☺️

the level of research here is so impressive, way to go mi-anne!!
Excellent ! I love the fact that you did so much research on Marilyn ! Thank you so much for creating this wonderful documentary and tutorial ! Many blessings !
+cynthiagreer Thanks for watching!! :)
This concept is so dope Mi! I love how the look came out. I’m so excited to see the next video!
never seen that epilepsy warning before, as an epileptic myself I appreciate it very much! good job!
Did you apply the liner after lashes because that’s what Marilyn did? Because that seems like it would be way more difficult than doing liner first.
You killed it Mi-Anne!! Audrey Hepburn next????
Loveeeee the idea!
Mi-Anne and Lucie are the reasons I remain subscribed to this channel.
Maliha Intikhab ikr
Same and shady too
me too!
I was in an exhibition by Marilyn Monroe. I really saw everything personal she had. Even her face mask, which you showed in the video. The great thing is that I got to know her personality.❤️✨🦋
Gorgeous - I loved the in-depth look you took into her life and the mindset behind the makeup.
It came out beautifully. I appreciate the care you took to learn more about her beauty and hopefully learned even more about her as a person. While i know some about Norma Jeane and Marilyn, I learned a lot more in the comments section. Thank you all.
2:10...Mi-Anne’s skin was glowing! I want this facial. Love Marilyn, great post ❤️...Didn’t they use Max Factor Pan Stick makeup back then?

Elizabeth Taylor! She was blessed with double eyelashes! Or Ava Gardner! Maybe someone from the 1930s like Mae West or Clara Bow?
marilyn liked her peach fuzz because it gave her a glow
That facial looked sooooooo relaxing 😍
Marilyn Monroe is such a beauty icon; A little fascinated with her style!
I love this. Love the brown wing with the false lashes I need to try that !!!!
So great to have you join us, Mi-Anne! Hope your skin continues looking ✨✨

Amazing video!! Jackie O is perfect for this series
Would love to see you look into Grace Kelly's, Anna May Wong's or maybe Brigitte Bardot's beauty routine! This video was so cool! 💕
I would love to see a video about Donna Summer's beauty routine.
Really like the style of this video, not just about the routine but digging a bit deeper way to go mi!
Marilyn loved her peach fuzz! It gave her a soft focus look on camera
This is fantastic! To know you can get products someone as Iconic as Marilyn Monroe was is so cool!
Mi-Anne!!!! You NAILED the Mamo look!!! You're a true artist! 😍
+charisamartin Thanks for checking it out!

+niab. Thanks for checking it out!

this was awesome. it was so fascinating to here all the techniques she used that are still used today, and that eyelash trick is awesome.
Watching the finished product that Mi-Anne Chan created I can admit that it didn't show glamour and beauty akin to Marilyn. It showed that and much more. How can a women look better than Marilyn, Mi-Anne did it.

+makeupmunchiesandmore Let us know how it goes!

already loving this series
WOW - I just noticed the little warning at the start about the flashing lights! I am epileptic, and though I am not that light sensitive, I totally appreciate you putting the warning there! There are some videos sometimes, where I think it would do good to give a warning. Especially those flashy cut effects that a lot of beauty gurus use! Thanks for thinking that far!!! :)
omg this was an amazing video! i love marilyn and this just made me love her even more ❤
+palomacalderon Thanks for checking it out!!
