- Bald cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) are renowned for their unique appearance and adaptability, making them a fascinating choice for bonsai cultivation. Here are some interesting facts and tips on how to grow them as bonsai:
Interesting Facts about Bald Cypress Trees:
1. **Natural Habitat**: Bald cypress trees are native to the southeastern United States and are typically found in swampy areas, floodplains, and along rivers. They are well-known for their "knees," which are woody projections that rise above the ground or water around the tree.
2. **Deciduous Conifer**: Unlike many conifers, bald cypress trees are deciduous, meaning they shed their leaves in the fall. Their needle-like leaves turn a beautiful russet or copper color before falling.
3. **Longevity and Size**: In the wild, bald cypress trees can live for hundreds of years and grow to impressive heights of 100-120 feet. Their adaptability to various soil types, including wet and dry conditions, contributes to their longevity.
4. **Resilient and Hardy**: Bald cypress trees are highly resilient, able to withstand flooding, drought, and a range of soil types. They are also resistant to many pests and diseases, making them robust and low-maintenance.
Growing Bald Cypress as Bonsai:
1. **Choosing the Right Plant**: Start with a young bald cypress tree from a nursery or collect a sapling from the wild (if permitted). Look for a plant with a strong trunk and good root structure.
2. **Soil and Potting**: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a combination of akadama, pumice, and lava rock. Bald cypress bonsai require a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot.
3. **Watering**: Keep the soil consistently moist, as bald cypress trees thrive in wet conditions. They can even tolerate being submerged in water for short periods. Ensure they never dry out completely, especially during the growing season.
4. **Light and Temperature**: Bald cypress bonsai prefer full sun to partial shade. They are hardy in USDA zones 4-9, which means they can tolerate a range of temperatures but may need protection from extreme cold or heat.
5. **Pruning and Wiring**: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the desired shape and size of your bonsai. Prune new shoots and branches during the growing season to promote a dense canopy. Wiring can be done to shape the branches, but be careful not to damage the soft, young bark.
6. **Fertilizing**: Feed your bald cypress bonsai with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce feeding in the fall and stop completely in the winter when the tree is dormant.
7. **Repotting**: Repotting should be done every 2-3 years in the early spring before new growth begins. This helps refresh the soil and allows for root pruning to keep the bonsai healthy and within the desired size.
8. **Winter Care**: During the winter dormancy period, protect your bald cypress bonsai from extreme cold by placing it in a sheltered location or using mulch to insulate the roots. Ensure it still receives adequate moisture.
Growing a bald cypress as a bonsai can be a rewarding experience, offering the chance to create a miniature version of this majestic tree. With proper care and attention, your bald cypress bonsai can thrive and become a beautiful addition to your collection.

Excellent Andy mate and wow that was a big chop. But I understand the design you're going for.
Going from experience there's one thing that I can guarantee, bald cypress back bud like crazy! Give it a few weeks and that trunk will be full of new shoots. As for cuttings I'm not sure, but can't see why they wouldn't take 🤞
Thanks gav mate
I’m hopeful for all of these.
Do you want a cutting or 2 mate
Hopefully they take, I've never tried bald cypress by cuttings before.
Thanks Andy, sure I'll give a couple a try 🙏
@@NotAnotherBonsaiChannel cool mate I’ll send you some dude 👊👊

@@JboosPlants_Bonsai cool fella look forward to it
Nice work Andy. That’s some fine looking material you have there. I’ve got one which I’ve been developing for several years (I’ll send you some pics)
I’m a bit uncertain on developing it. Please share your thoughts.
I’ve got some nice branching but every spring it explodes with new growth from the trunk. I guess that’s good but too many choices for me 😂.
Looking forward to seeing the fusion project. Thanks, keep growing
Thanks Matt nice one mate. Yeah will be good to see the trees mate 👊👊
Very cool...I need to watch it later today...
Thanks Dave 👊👊
How was the show in CT?
@mattbrennan647 it was okay...very small number of tree's were shown... probably a dozen trees...New Haven bonsai was also last weekend. I got there very late on Sunday and some of the tree's were already packed up. 🤷♂️
@@dkstott29 thanks Dave

Nice using the cuttings to try and root. The big cut will look great once it roots. The pruning did wonders. Great video.
Thanks Tom mate 👊👊
Nice trees Andy. I love Bald Cypress.
Thanks Steve mate 👊👊👊
Better late than never Andy to watch! The bald or swamp cypress love the wet stuff. I grow some in water full time.
Nice mate
I’ll bet they need that in Australia mate hot all the time fella 👊👊👊
@Bonsaicrazy yes can be too 🔥.
I’ll catch it later Andy. 👍🏻✌🏻
Thanks Matt 👊👊
This is the first of your video's that I have watched. I heard about your channel from Patricia, The Bonsai Balcony. I hope that those large cuttings root, that would be great to see. I am trying my first ever air layer on my bald cypress right now. In the beginning of the video the information went by faster than I could read it. I don't know if others had a problem or not, but I had to rewind several times to read the information that was on the screen. Other than that nice video.
Hi lees
Lovely to meet you. Patricia is a star I was just about to watch her video!!
Do you know what I completely apologise for that,
Not a lot of people watch my videos 😂😂 I’m very new and tbh I didn’t think people would read it 😂😂 they normally scup through,
At least that’s what the analytics say 😂😂
I will definitely do better for you next time Lee 👊👊
Glad to have you watching I’m a bit crazy and like to do things a bit different than the norm so I hope you enjoy my content 👊👊
Good luck with the air layer hope it works out for you 👊👊👊
healthy! look at it gooo 💪 love the nebari on number 2. I like the new scale on all of the trees. Yeah i wonder about summer right now too, its currently cloudy, wet, and cold....probably mid June ( hopefully ) 💚
Thought I’d do it a month before I would have normally to give it a chance of growth.
But the sun is not shining this year 😩😩👊👊👊👊
Wonderful video Andy. Good luck with the cuttings
Thanks Alex thanks for coming dude
Result! 😁😁
👊👊👊
Nice chop mate
.. better proportions!
Thanks mate 👊👊
Can't wait bro!👊❤️💚
Thanks Matt 👊
I prefer a formal for these trees also
Thanks
I hope they turn out okay
👊👊👊
Can these tree be kept indoors under a grow light?
@@chubbybear12 probably mate have to be a big space though 👊👊
I think you made a big mistake on you cutting your bald cypress like you did, I have a bunch of them and didn't cut any of them like that🥲
Hi fella i can appreciate that my friend.
Do you follow Patricia from Patricia’s bonsai balcony?!!
I have a clear plan for these trees. And sizing that I’d like to keep to as I intend to make a bespoke pot for them and after all
Understanding our own reasoning IS the very heart of bonsai. No bonsai is ever impressive to those that don't understand until our reasonings come together.
Thanks for watching hope you continue 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊
Yes I do watch her, I live in Virginia , nice chatting with you 🤙🏼😎
