  • Sonoff is joining the Zigbee ecosystem and released Zigbee Bridge and also a few Zigbee sensors. This video is an introduction to how Zigbee works in Sonoff and how to get started. I will be covering the individual sensors and how to use them in a separate videos coming in the future.

    I don't understand what is the point of the unit. Why not just use eWelink with the normal Sonoff items?

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are many reasons:
      1: some of these items only available in Zigbee. E.g. separate temperature sensor, motion sensor. So you have to use a Zigbee bridge for those. Yes, you can use a regular Sonoff Basic instead of Zigbee Basic.
      2: I never had issues, but there is a limit how many devices a wifi router can use. If you have such issues, going to Zigbee means that the wifi router only communicated with one device
      3: I did not mention it here, but Zigbee creates a mesh network, this means if your zigbee device is outside the reach of the gateway, it can send a signal via another zigbee device which is in range with the gateway. So all zigbee devices act like a signal repeater. So again easier to do this with Zigbee that with covering all areas with multiple wifi repeaters.
      4: Zigbee devices have better battery life

    *I'm sure they work perfectly fine with any off the shelf (ex an echo plus or smartthings gateway) **do7.pl/SonoffHub** but they also works perfectly with a DIY setup using domoticz and zigbee2mqtt.Easy to wire, drop in replacement to a standard wifi model (picture attached to this review mid-wiring, 1 module done). Very low current drawn when output is off (about 0.25W power usage when off, killawatt measured)*

    Thank you. Just the kind of video I was looking for. I have some quick questions. Will be nice if you can answer them.
    Firstly, the older black RF bridge will connect ANY 433 MHz device with sonoff (ewelink) app where as the ZB bridge will only connect ZB devices? Am I right?
    Secondly, If I do not have any ZB devices, then does it make sense to buy 433 MHz RF bridge instead and buy cheaper door sensors, PIR sensors, humidity sensors etc and use them with Ewelink app?
    Can I use ZB bridge with ZB sensors and trigger activate my Sonoff smart switch which are not from ZB?
    Thank once again.

    • @csongorvarga
      @csongorvarga  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) Yes, RF is only for 433MHz, Zigbee is only for Zigbee
      2) Yes, RF is cheaper. But for some reason Sonoff limited the number of devices that can connect to RF Bridge, so for many motion sensors you need multiple RF Bridges, so it eats the price difference.
      3) Yes, ZB sensor can trigger any other device, Zigbee and Wifi as well.

      eWelink can link to Google Home so they should be fully visible. If eWelink doesn't work though, you can very easily connect the sensors to whatever your favourite ZigBee co-ordinator is and your favourite Home Automation hub and they will show up fine. The sensors show up as Temperature, Motion, etc etc. It will just be if eWelink is available in Google in your area.

    • @csongorvarga

      Yes and no. I made videos using Sonoff zigbee devices in Tuya and vice versa. It works in most cases, but not all. In general if an ecosystem supports a particular device (e.g. a temperature sensor, door sensor, motion sensor), similar devices from other brand will work as well. But if you have some "unknown" sensor, like Sonoff does not have a radiator value, a radiator valve will not work from other brand either.

      The WiFi versions do not use a bridge or hub. They all connect into the eWelink app. The ZigBee bridge will also be in the app with all devices. If you use Sonoff as an ecosystem, you use eWelink app as your "hub" The ZigBee bridge is not a hub, not is just a Zigbee Co-Ordinator.

    • @esutoks
      @esutoks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EsotericArctos To be more precise, AFAIK, Sonoff does not have a tradional hub. Sonoff "hub" is virtual and exists in the Chinese cloud with one exception when eWeLink app uses "LAN mode" (not all eWelink devices support LAN mode). eWeLink is only the control application. I really do not understand why Sonoff does not release a physical hub which could control local devices in parallel with the cloud "hub", because without Internet connection Sonoff devices cannot execute smart scenes and as a consequence you "smart" home becomes "dumb".

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@esutoks You are correct as such, but when referring to a hub, it is a control device. Your hub is your control centre, which with Sonoff is your smartphone really as that is your central point for adding and removing devices with most control relying on the intelligence of the cloud.
