In Demon’s Souls players will take on the role of a fallen warrior bound to the Nexus in an attempt to save the land of Boletaria from an endless fog full of demons. Living and dying over and over again, they will slay demons with the aid of legendary heroes of the realm, as they gain power and try to lure The Old One back to sleep and end the nightmare.
The Gameplay of Demon’s Souls should be mostly familiar to those who have played any of From Software’s more recent titles, but there are mechanics even Souls vets will not understand if they have not played Demon’s Souls before.
Players will make their way through the 5 different Archstones in nearly any order they choose, defeating enemies and bosses, and collecting demon’s souls that they can use to level up, upgrade their equipment, and purchase items that may assist them in their journey. The difference in Demon’s Souls is that there is much more of a focus on the worlds themselves, and less of a focus on the Bosses.
Demon’s Souls Remake changes very little from the original in the way of mechanics, only adding a few quality of life improvements here and there, without compromising the intensity of Demon’s Souls. That is to say, if those playing Demon’s Souls now for the first time have an easier experience, it won’t be by much. There are no “bonfires” near fog gates or checkpoints added, or anything of that nature.
Visually Demon’s Souls Remake is the best looking Souls game to date, and Bluepoint completely crushed all expectations in this department. Never has Boletaria looked so good, and the lighting and spell effects really bring the game to life. Demon’s Souls Remake has raised the bar for Elden Ring, which is only good news, since From will likely have to up its game or face serious backlash.
My first playthrough of the Remake took me roughly 24 hours, and that was with having played the original about 6 years ago, and having a ton of Souls experience. I expect this number to be a lot higher for souls veterans who have not played it before, and even higher still for newbies to the franchise.
Demon’s Souls is not a game meant to be played once, it’s a game with the catchphrase “The Real Demon’s Souls Starts Here” when you enter NG+, and it is absolutely true. Manipulating world and character tendency, finding all the NPC events, collecting all weapons and spells is a multi-cycle affair that gets more and more fun as you go on.
Demon's Souls Remake is a faithful reconstruction of the original game with subtle modern-day improvements. A genre-defining masterpiece, it's one of those games that is not for everyone but should be tried by everyone. Running beautifully in 4k and smoothly at 60FPS, Boletaria will entice you to go further, explore deeper, and dare to die again. Fully worth the PS5 launch price.

I can't wait to play the game when i get a PS5 someday but i have to say that i'm not completly sold on some of the music changes like Tower Knight ( missed the ha ha ha ) and Maiden Astrea.

There is a problem in your review about the history. It wasn't just japanese players who helped it become a hit. It was also chinese, and europeans like myself who imported the english version from hong kong (thank you playasia!). Also many japanese players glitched their SL/stats and went invading 4-1 with daikatanas and lag. It was constant hell having these guys invading all the time. There was a hall of fame in the game and it was all glitched players. I kept telling everyone that the original was so good that it would be game of the year that year (and it happened but I think it was a special kind of GOTY category).
I still have my chinese-english import from 2009 with me.
It's too bad most people won't get to play it anytime soon unless you want to pay PS5 scalpers $1600 for a PS5.
I know, Sony messed up this launch like never before. It really sucks that one of my favorite games ever is going to suffer from it :(
@@Fextralife I seemed to be one of the only people who managed to get one from preordering with sony. I had no problem getting mine from them. I hear all these horror stories but I really had no issue.
@@Fextralife I disagree, Sony didn't necessarily mess up with launch... It's the retail stores that messed up... It's the fact that the world is in the middle of a pandemic... The online purchasing only has made it a scalpers paradise. I lucked out and was able to score a PS5 from Walmart online back on September 17th (I live in the USA), but since then I've tried to order another for my nephew, and it's been a shit show. You're able to get it in cart but cannot fully check out since there are literally thousands of people trying to get one at the same time creating a bottleneck on these online retailer sites. Sony cannot force retailers to have in store purchasing when the government is trying their damn hardest to keep us separated for our 'safety'. Hell, I've had the same issue with trying to score the X-Box series X... more so since I wasn't able to preorder it from any retailer. Sony delivered for the people who want the system, but scalpers are taking advantage of the online only purchases. Right now EBay has 11,513 PS5 listings. Some of those listings have more than 1 PS5 available. If scalpers did not have a part to play in this release I believe gamers that want the new system would have had a fairly easy time purchasing one. Sorry for the long comment, but I don't think we can place most of the blame on Sony here with the PS5 release.

@@zmbigmr I agree with all you just said, but everybody knew bots were gonna get everything. There are ways to stop them. Extra captchas and verification methods, ect. Ultimately the retailers don't give a shit as long as they sell them, but Sony couldve stepped in and made things a little more difficult for the bots at least

Honestly, I still prefer their site bc even if something is slightly off/outdated, it is still accurate enough to be reliable. Except for that one time someone changed all the stat info of a weapon to 69, that was an odd one.

Elden Ring has no standing being compared to Demon's Souls when it comes to graphics. DS (PS5) is on another level.
It hit me in the gut when they renamed sticky white stuff to slime and old spice as aged spice
These are things that annoy me. They should have just left original names (and boss designs) alone. It may be Bluepoints right to make changes as they see fit, but to me it's sacrilage.
@@RJ-cq8dd idk maybe they thought they would have been sued for trademarked names like Old Spice, but I’m not sure about the slime. Maybe to stick it from the lore perspective that is is from the slugs.
I’ve been a graphic designer for 15 years, and the ‘thing’ that is lacking in the ‘You Died’ screen is an extremely poor font choice. Simple. I assure you if they went with a gothic style Serif font, similar to the original, this wouldn’t even be a talking point.
Without question this is the problem with all of the text. A gothic font with serifs would go a very long way to give back that feel from the UI that seems to be missing as well.
@@GuidingOlive - Absolutely. The weapon UI is quite poor also. The diamond shape is clunky in appearance, and there wasn’t any reason to change the typical From Soft rectangular UI we’ve become accustomed to. That being said, it still is my Game of the Year for 2020, for everything else they did right 😊
Totally agree as a designer my self, the typeface is the issue, the UI is also way too clean, modern and looks out of place. Hence it throws you out of the experience. This was made for convenience over aesthetic. So I am guessing it was designed by programmers and not designers. Also the health and stamina bar feel almost unfinished like from an alpha stage when you're just testing out the game.

If DS is like that, and we know it started whole Souls series ,then it is a phenomenal treat. I also peordered Ps5 not just for Demons Souls but it was one of the reasons. For lot of people it is like a brand new game. What difference does that make if you never played it before?However I would not buy PS5 just for this game if I played it on previous gen.

This was a nice review. You explained the good and bad in a more fair way, rather than just dismissing something because it was not in the original/changed from the original.
Demon’s Souls was never about the boss battles in the first place. Most have in-game and in-universe weaknesses the player is meant to be able to exploit. The game literally teaches you this by the first “real” boss Phalanx.
The game is instead all about the world actually fulfilling promises. Every time you see something off in the horizon and think “that’s interesting”, you discover hours later that you CAN in fact visit it, uncover its mysteries, and slay its demons.
All the bosses could be cheesed as well. Some could be killed through the fog gates (although I think this worked in Dark Souls too).
The original Demon's souls kept me gaming, as I was about to give up, due to so many games being samey, so it's good to see the remake being so praised, I'll 100% be picking this up when I get a ps5

I honestly think the camera options are so far the best of any souls games. Just the fact you can change it is so damn nice

I thought BluepOint stated that they did not touch the code. Meaning all the mechanics, timing, enemies placements and damage values are all kept the same. The only things they worked on are graphics, music and UI.
The changed more than that. A noticeable example: if you are max item burden you can send your items directly to storage now. They also added weapons, armor and items.
Not quite- they did say they didnt touch enemy AI/combat etc- (beyond trying to make the terrible rolling a bit better) so it is just as hard and all the timings etc are the same.
But they did add a few QOL and balance things- that are fairly minor. herbs have a max carry of 99 now instead of infinite- but big deal.. nobody needs even 99 for anything.. and you can send items directly to storage- which is very good- the backpack encumberance in demon's souls sucks- which is why it was scapped in all their other games.

I watched an IGN video review a few months after the original games initial release and the thought of players or myself invading another players game was pretty mind blowing to me. I found It shortly at a store called Hasting's and thousands of game hours later in the series, being able to come back to it with this graphical overhaul and quality of life changes is pretty freaking sweet .I'll get a PS5 just for this game.
I haven't played Demon Souls. My first souls series game was Sekiro and that made me want more, over the summer I played Dark souls 1 and 2 was currently working on 3 then this game came out. I am very happy that I bought it and currently playing it. Highly would recommend to anyone who loves the challenge and the rewards of overcoming those challenges in this game. 10/10

That was a pretty bold statement on the music being the best of any souls game , i started playing souls games after demon souls so i never had the chance to play this gem , however ds3 as an amazing ost and dnt even get me started on bloodbourne my all time favorite, i dnt think anything can touch its soundtrack im sorry lol

Wow these guys really worked hard. I remember in the demon’s souls and dark souls 1 days I used to hate whenever I looked something up and fextralife was the first link because it was always missing information, and everyone used wikidot. Glad they stuck to it!
Souls series has teleporting features since the first game. Makes one game with interconnected world and since then the fandom is been bitching about it

Loved the review (gave it thumbs Up!) but this game does not run 4k60, it's 1440p upscaled to 4k. The True 4k mode is 4k30 and it looks crystal clear on a native 4k Monitor/TV. I'm personally using an LG 27GN950-B. Often times I find myself toggling between the two Modes just to see how much clearer the Cinematic Mode really is. 4k Native looks stunning but the Performance Mode is definitely the way to go for this title. I just wished the Native 4k option ran in 60. What a treat that would have been! And yes there is some slight fuzziness in Image Quality in Performance Mode but it isn't that noticeable unless you really stop and look for it BUT you can definitely tell when you switch from Performance to Cinematic. Cinematic Mode (obviously when standing still) just looks perfect but once you start moving around in game, back to Performance mode you will go haha.

I agree, this feels like a really good remaster, not a remake. The fact they basically left the combat unchanged was IMO a mistake. There was plenty to improve upon and I wish they had done so.
They were playing it safe. Considering FromSoft played no part in its development, retaining the game’s original identity was probably the better choice. The souls community is very sensitive and BP would have more than likely gotten a lot of heat for tweaking and messing with the original design. However, they have an open mind and ear. They were incredibly quick to act in regards to the Flamelurker’s “generic” appearance issue. It’s not beyond them to release a DLC/patch that gives bosses additional phases and mechanics. The game is pretty fresh and I’m sure they’re waiting on a lot of player feedback to receive the “okay” to do all sorts of things with it. Anyway, that’s just my hope! And they’ve shown that they both care and listen.

Copped the AntOnline bundle and it finally came three days ago.
I was too young* and poor for Demon’s Souls on PS3 - have beat Sekiro, DS3 and DS1R on XB1, and now, coming home to PS5…I see why everyone raved about this all those years. The story and the enemies are really unique, like, it doesn’t feel like the souls games and yet you can see that it does. It’s nice to go through a completely new experience.
These graphics are sick. The lack of loading screens/wait time is still mind bending. I really hope everyone can get one soon, this game and console are making me want to play more than I’ve wanted to in years.
I agree with everything you said but the graphics, you gave the graphics a 9 , there is no other game to this point that looks this good. This graphics are a 10 for me.
I agree. If you cant point to a game with better gfx, how is it not a 10? (keeping in mind 10 does NOT mean perfect- it means as good or better than anything else out there in said catagory.)
One aspect of this review that makes it better than others is the visuals. You captured some stunning and iconic moments in the game. Fantastic visuals really help keep the viewer around for the actual content.
It is so annoying to me that fextralife wikis aren't the first wiki to come up on google for every game. The videos are similarly high quality. It's all so professional and clean.

I just beat my first playthrough last night. I loved the original and still hold it in high regard. I really dislike that people are saying FromSoftware needs to raise the bar graphically to match the DeS remake. Bluepoint had more time, and more funds to overhaul the graphics of an already made game than it took to create the entirety of the original Demon’s Souls. From Software should continue being From Software regardless of what BluePoint has done.
They need to grow not make the same thing over and over. I super hope Elden ring is a lot more than a DS clone. I ALSO expect them to up the gfx- no reason they should get worse is there? There is room to improve their games on all fronts. One area they lack in more than gfx is animations- they really DO need to improve there.
I have no problem with them being inspired to do better after seeing this remaster- if that happens. That in no way stops them doing all the other amazing things From do. And lets face it bluepoint couldnt.. Its a damn site easier to make over a game than design it from scratch.

Nobody's going to appreciate the original unless they've played that one first and spent loads of time on it. Only nostalgia can make you play it again otherwise these graphics and performance make the original unplayable
@@talharehman3664 I don't agree with that. We're talking PS3 afterall with HD graphics and 30fps not some PS1 or N64 game with 240p image and 20fps performance. The original is perfectly playable if you can stomach 30fps with dips

i dont know.. i played the original at the time, and when a rework was announced for the PS5 i was like "oh boy!, all the cut content, all new graphics oh boy NOT programmed by from software!? oh thank GOD!!!" but except the graphics that we can all agree is exquisite..why i should give all that money to buy a ps5 and even more money to buy a game that (again...except the graphics) i alredy own? its easy: i WONT
Demon's Souls is one of the most wonderful games I've ever played🥰. The visuals are stunning and the mood it sets is up there with the best (like Elden Ring and Blood Borne)
I have wish BluePoint would do the same for Bloodborne.
Bloodborne will not need a remake, and bluepoint has nothing to do with the game. In this remake of demons souls the soundtrack became generic, they changed the design of several bosses and did not even improve the AI of the enemies.
I'll probably get a ps5 mid 2021 or fall lf 2021 can't wait though to platinum Demon Souls remake :)
Although Nioh 2 will probably still be my GOTY, Demon's Souls is one of my favorite games ever so I'm sure I'll love the remake when I get a chance to play it!
I asked on another video, but I'm really curious as to what your pa5 settings are and what you used to capture this gameplay? My image on my screen does not look this good and other TH-cam content makers don't look this good either.
It's 4k capture. If you don't have a 4k TV then you won't get as sharp a picture

The brutal camera is standard in all fromsoft games, bluepoint must think it comes with the punishing game mechanics so they added it

It was really unlikely that bluepoint would just put new content of that scale in the game since From Software didn't participate too much (if not at all) in the creation of this remake.
They wanted to stay as faithful to the original as possible, so adding new lore and new areas was really never a option.

Bluepoint addressed the broken archstone. They didn't want to add new content to the game, because it wouldn't be true to the original. I wholeheartedly agree with that decision.

Not a bad way to start but you could try Elden ring and then work your way down. This is probably one of the harder games in the series

Same. If I can ever get a PS5, I'll likely rent it since I wanted an actually remake, not a remaster with really nice graphics. They had an opportunity to improve the combat but didn't. It will be a great game but still feels like a missed opportunity. I do think this gives us hope there will be a true Demon's Souls sequel in this generation, after Elden Ring.
Or heck, if FromSoft is truly done with Souls games, Sony can always have another studio make a sequel.

Some don't know that Sony, not FromSoft owns the Demon's Souls IP, so they are in no way required to get From's blessing. I'm sure they would but if From is truly done with the Souls series, there's no good reason another studio can't improve upon it further.
@@mattm7798 I want From to be able to do their own thing, creativity is the strongest quality of their studio. I would be really happy if Sony was able to get another studio to make a sequel, I wouldn't be too surprised if they did either considering the insane amount of attention the remake garnered.
Hell, I beat the first Demon Souls more than 5 times in a row. I loved that game and what's more, it's the easiest Souls game by far. Even though we were able to secure both the Xbox Series X and PS5 *physical we have not picked up Demon Souls yet.
However, that all changes tomorrow as I'm picking up a copy. We chose to wait as we went a little wild this Christmas and I wanted to wait until the game drought started in January...well, we're here and I'm ready to go. Yes they should but make a quest to access it than spans the 5 worlds collecting items to magically repair it or some other mechanic and a short back story to say how / why it was destroyed in the first place and possibly get some input via From Software what their intentions for that missing world were.
@@tarnvedra7850 It would be great. p.s there is some very unfinished map areas from that world left in the games code - you can see vids of them online- also other cut stuff.. So if they go on that and also if they can get Froms design documents for that cut world, it would probably be fairly close to what was intended.

I've literally never rolled a direction I didn't want to go and I have like 6 pt's.
Looks great. But can't justify getting a PS5 just for this (plus won't fit in my living room).
Still hopeful it will come to PC in a year or 2, if not will likely pick up a mid generation PS5 if they launch a smaller version. Here's hoping.
Since it was a play station exclusive back then there is almost no chance of a pc release.

They have been making noises about opening up exclusives to other platforms after they have been exclusive on PS for a year or two.

I can understand Sony keeping it exclusive until next year but I believe Fromsoft will soon have completed their 'exclusive' bond with Sony. Sony putting this out multi platform end of 2021 would be a win win for all.

Can anyone clarify to me what he meant when he said character and world tendency were barely touched upon in Bloodborne? That is one of my favorite games that I played through multiple times and I have to admit, if there was anything like world tendency in that game then I completely missed it.......Unless he was just talking about how some zones change permanently after certain boss fights/events like the sky and seeing Amygdalas and other weird shit pop up.
This remake was my first real souls experience and I loved it. I think my first playthrough clocked in at 49 hours after trying to get each world tendency to white for the secrets. I'll have to dive back in again sometime to do the black tendency! It's been almost a year since I completed it, so that'll have to be soon lol.
Wish they would release it to the PS4 too :(

The game isn't 4K/60. It's 4K/30 and 1440p/60. The developers even confirmed this, but with like practically every game, the difference between 1440p and 4K is barely noticeable when playing on a TV at ~6 feet away, and those who claim otherwise are suffering major placebo effects and quite frankly, full of shit. It's been proven time and time again in blind tests that most cannot tell beyond 1440p on a TV at normal viewing distances, and some could go as high as 1800p, but really not beyond that. It's easy to say "Oh but I see the difference!" if you've only ever played on a console at 1080p and then switch it over to 4K. Duh, there's an obvious difference. The problem is these people seem to ignore the fact that other resolutions exist between those two as well, and they aren't actually seeing the full 4K image usually.
This game uses slightly more particles and has better temporal anti-aliasing and contact shadows when in "cinematic" mode, with the 4K resolution, but it's not worth playing in that mode at all.
As far as I remember its dynamic 4k dropping to 1440p in 60fps mode.I agree about placebo effects:)

Everyone says Demons Souls is the easiest game out of the franchise but i remember it being pretty tough.
I woudnt say that- but it probably is if you include the other games dlcs though.
TBH bloodborne might be the 'easiest' - or maybe its combat style/pacing was just a perfect match for how I play best?
Of the souls series, I think 2 is the easiest- though it has some pretty hard bossess in the dlcs.
@@elevown Wow u are spot on 👍. I have the platinum for BB and it wasnt that bad. The Old Hunters DLC was actually pretty brutal tho lol. DS2 wasnt that hard but yes the DLC bosses are challenging especially Fume Knight. DS1 was not too tough but DS3 was the hardest imo, but also extremely addicting.
I like this kind of review better than those from standard media review

Dope review! I'm moderately experienced, DS3 having been my 1st game of this franchise. I've been replaying the souls games in descending order so I'm extremely excited for this! Has anyone played as a mage yet? Was it enjoyable?

From has always been able to overlook graphical presentation simply because their art direction is SO good. I really wish Blue Point could have handled the Dark Souls remaster as well, cause that game was SUPER disappointing. Might as well not have done a remaster at all really
I never Played deS but the other from games. Are there a lot of build possibilitys like in ds 3 ?
Yeah, it's pretty much a proto-Dark Souls. The mechanics are a tad different, but overall if you're familiar with Dark Souls series, the skill build is customizable, though probably not as diverse as recent From Soft's games.

If you want to go mage, you are in for a treat. The mage class gets ridiculously powerful mid-late game in DeS. They split mage into two classes(mage & pyro) in future games, and watered down their power.
For me this is the only next gen game so far! Thx bluepoint.
Please fromsoftware, don't focus on the graphics but on the gameplay, level design and lore!!!
I'm probably one of the few people that has enjoyed the growing complexity of the souls franchise. I see things like backstab fishing, and the tower knight getting caught in a shield bash loop and I can't help but think how quaint this title is by 2020 standards.
Well the best bet is to NOT cheese bossess in it just because you can- it will be a lot more fun.
