@Ryan Harren No not white, you must be stupid. Gil Scott was both a lyricist and a musician. Where modern rap and hip hop are strictly lyricist, the beats are not made by them, it's their sound engineers. +amirracurls101 That is the truth, Amirra (I take it your name means "teacher"?) Where are the Curtis Mayfields, James Browns, Watts Prophets, Gil Scott-Herons, etc. of this generation? There are none, and if there are, they're buried so far underground they will never get mainstream airplay. Message music frightens people.
i want to say that if you are a white kid growing up in a white world listening to white voices tell you what the white world is, and also listening to those same white voices tell you what the black world is, then the first time you hear gil scott heron tell you in a black voice what the black world feels like, you might have some trouble adjusting the new uncomfortable truths - this is good, this is progress - keep listening, stay humble -
@@Heelo_0 they never said it was. they’re actually encouraging people to listen to gil scott heron for a different perspective on the black experience. dont look at someone mention race and shut down or disregard what they’re saying. talking about race and things like that isnt bad, you just have to make sure it’s appropriate and youre not talking on things you dont know. with the section at the end where heron is reciting a poem their comment isnt out of place imo. im not mad but like cmon now lmao
@rilaluka6502 yea you got a point but even if it's mentioned in a good manor it still affects how a brain functions meaning that you'll always see it from this perspective

The Brothers Johnson warned of the dangers of angel dust on the inner sleeve of their Light Up the Night album. After all these years, it occurred to me that Gil and George Johnson sound very similar.
No bass guitar on this song or anywhere on this album, believe it or not .. keyboard bass synth parts by Brian Jackson, drummer is Alvin Taylor on this song. * album is Secrets (1978) not Pieces Of A Man (1971)
back in the mid-70s dust was a periodic treat for me and my friends on the streets. i LOVED the high, but i didn't abuse it. i had one good friend from the projects that did a bit too much, and he was kind of lost after that, his head just didn't seem right. but i ran into him a few years later, and the dude had completely recovered! it was great to see, but probably rare. it is some strong shit, and dangerous. but then all chemicals can be.

He never really seemed to notice
Vision failing
‘Cause that was all part of the high
Sweat was pouring
He couldn’t take it
The room was exploding
He might not make it
(Angel Dust)
Please, children, would you listen?
(Angel Dust)
Just, it just ain’t where it’s at
(Angel Dust)
You won’t remember what you’re missing
But down some dead-end streets
There ain’t no turning back
[Bridge: Julia Waters, Marti McCall, and Maxine Waters]
Dust
Dust
[Verse 2: Gil Scott-Heron with (Background Vocals by Julia Waters, Marti McCall, and Maxine Waters)]
They were standing
Everybody in a circle
The whole family
Listening to the preacher’s words
Sis was crying
She alone held the secrets
About his dying
Tears falling to earth
Maybe her fault
He was so trusting
God only knew why
They were dusting
(Angel Dust)
Please. Gonna be the death of you, children
(Angel Dust)
It just ain’t where it’s at
(Angel Dust)
You won’t remember what you’re missing
But down some dead-end streets
There ain’t no turning back, to back, to back, to back from
(Dust)
Believe me, sister
(Dust)
Don’t mean nobody no good no way
[Verse 3: Gil Scott-Heron with (Background Vocals by Julia Waters, Marti McCall, and Maxine Waters)]
Sweat was pouring
He couldn’t take it
The room was exploding
He might not make it
(Angel Dust)
Please, children, it’s hard to listen, but
(Angel Dust)
I ain’t trying to run your life
(Angel Dust)
Might just seem like one more good time
But down some dead-end streets
There ain’t no turning back
(Angel Dust)
Please, children, it’s hard to listen, but
(Angel Dust)
I ain’t trying to run your life, believe me
(Angel Dust)
Don’t mean nobody no good nowhere
And down some dead-end streets
There ain’t no turning back, to back, to back
Go away from
(Angel Dust)
Please, children, would you listen to me?
(Angel Dust)
I’m in fear, I ain’t trying to run your life, believe me
(Angel Dust)
Just don’t mean nobody no good
(Angel Dust)
THANK YOU
vision failing now

I swear I regret not knowing the guy when this masterpiece was released. God's work. Truly timeless! I hope he's doing good!
hes dead
@@joaquinzunigaperlstein9991 then I wish peace for him and his family
He died in 2011. What an absolute legend !
I'm in love with his voice and lyrics-so happy to have discovered him a couple of years back!
Some years back in the 90's the man sat across from me in the subway. Somewhere in the Bronx. Subway car was pretty empty just me and him. All I could say was hello I know who you are...........we need more like him.
So in love with this song
I'm in love wit u
I wish it had a video.
I'm in love with you miss.
Noala Greenlee girl you shiiiiiiiiiiit!!!! cute
Pleasant surprise. I’m 23, this is my first exposure to him. Fan for Life!
you got taste youngblood!
Pure genius , loved this man and his music and words. Lucky to see him in 1979 and 2010
Music use to carry a message straight to your soul! Children today have no true idea what they are really missing so tragic!!!!!
Man, we were some hipped ass children singing along with this on the radio
laxpopov lol yup
+amirracurls101 That is the truth, Amirra (I take it your name means "teacher"?) Where are the Curtis Mayfields, James Browns, Watts Prophets, Gil Scott-Herons, etc. of this generation? There are none, and if there are, they're buried so far underground they will never get mainstream airplay. Message music frightens people.
+amirracurls101 ahhh...true true...
+qwerrewq824 You missed the point of the message... totally.
This base line tho? Jeeeez Louise
Happy memories of performing this back in 1988 at Middlesex. A great band and great gig. Thanks to one and all (always). Halcyon days.🌞🙏👍🇬🇧🌞
This is an absolutely amazing rare piece of music. It is not emulating funk/soul like many try, it is an actual funk/soul song
" All the fly ladies are making a fuss, but no I can't pay attention because I'm on that dust"
Much respect Mr Gil Heron you tried to warn us as many has but you some of us that's have pay attention rest easy
King
My Momma introduced me to a lot of good music back in those days...
i want to say that if you are a white kid growing up in a white world listening to white voices tell you what the white world is, and also listening to those same white voices tell you what the black world is, then the first time you hear gil scott heron tell you in a black voice what the black world feels like, you might have some trouble adjusting the new uncomfortable truths - this is good, this is progress - keep listening, stay humble -
Don't have to do anything with race, Music is for everybody
@@Heelo_0 ehhh only if you cant think for yourself or form your own opinions after looking at multiple perspectives but if thats how you feel then i dont suppose i can change your mind nor do i care to. have a good one.
@@rilaluka6502 fairs, blessed day to you 🙏❤️
I love it.. Brings back memories.. You are greatly missed brother.. Thanks for sharing!
The Brothers Johnson warned of the dangers of angel dust on the inner sleeve of their Light Up the Night album. After all these years, it occurred to me that Gil and George Johnson sound very similar.
The drums and on bass guitar are killing it
No bass guitar on this song or anywhere on this album, believe it or not .. keyboard bass synth parts by Brian Jackson, drummer is Alvin Taylor on this song.
* album is Secrets (1978) not Pieces Of A Man (1971)
@@johnarundell7951 Drum keyboard bass it just mix well with the song
back in the mid-70s dust was a periodic treat for me and my friends on the streets. i LOVED the high, but i didn't abuse it. i had one good friend from the projects that did a bit too much, and he was kind of lost after that, his head just didn't seem right. but i ran into him a few years later, and the dude had completely recovered! it was great to see, but probably rare. it is some strong shit, and dangerous. but then all chemicals can be.
