Thinking of making running your New Year's resolution? Hold on a minute.... First I want you to hear me out as to why I think that's not a great idea. New Year's Resolutions get a bad rap for a reason, and whilst I would LOVE every beginner runner to start on January 1st and keep it up all year round, we know that's really difficult! I'll explore the pitfalls of setting unrealistic goals, the pressure to conform, and the inevitable disappointment that often follows. Instead, what about a fresh perspective on personal growth, emphasising continuous improvement and SUSTAINABLE new habits, not life-overhauling lists that are impossible to achieve. Hit play for a dose of reality and kickstart a year focused on meaningful progress, free from the confines of resolutions that may set you up for failure - along with some helpful tips if you do want running to be a more frequent part of your life!

Almost 3 years ago I made a new year resolution to quit smoking and start running. Well I started running earlier and definitely tried quitting smoking at the same time. It really took the new year to motivate me enough to give it my best shot. It worked! Almost 3 years smoke free and still running. I think the key is if you make a New Year’s resolution, don’t lose hope if you fail within the first few days/weeks/months. KEEP TRYING!!! Just because it wasn’t a linear progression doesn’t mean it’s a failure. It just means you’re human and habits are hard to break AND form!

I decided to just "try it out" for a month with what I had, no buying anything, then if I was able to be consistent (2-3 times per week) then I'd buy shoes and sign up for a race with a friend as a reward! That's how I ran my first half marathon! 😊
Giving myself breathing room to grow into the habit made all the difference!
    Happy running everyone!

Agreed! If you want to better yourself, then start today. I used to run in high school and college, then life happened for about 20 years, and almost no running. So, about 2 and a half years ago I started running again. I found I really liked it. I am 51 years old and I am surprised how much I have lost from my times. However, I have found that I enjoy running more than ever before. I run 4-5 times per week and I usually get about a 100 miles per month. It’s just so enjoyable, I don’t want to stop. Running is one of the activities that I do that gets me out of bed in the morning with a smile to start the day.

I've never been one for resolutions. BUT, I took up running on January 1st this year after being inspired seeing my younger brother go for a run over his Xmas leave from the forces (he followed in my footsteps), and I thought "I used to be able to do that". I decided there and then to message my local running club as I thought the community aspect would help keep me accountable (it has and so much more). January 1st was just a timing coincidence rather than a "new year, new me" approach. I'm so grateful for that inspiration. I now follow you, Dan, and a few others running channels that continue to inspire me on here and insta. 1 year in and I've taken 11 minutes off my 5k time and can't wait to see how far I can take my running in 2024. Have a great Xmas and best of luck with your marathon in Houston, Phily! Thanks for the great content as always.

As a rule, we didn't want to feel like we were dying during the race, which meant we really had to be consistent. Our mental and physical health improved. And running content creators like you help keep us motivated. We plan on doing it again in 2024 and I will be doing my first marathon next Winter. Cheering for you and your olympic goals! 2023 is the first time in my life I actually achieved (and smashed) my New Year's resolutions! My target was 5 million steps, with at least 3 runs a week.
As of today (17/12), I've done 5.8 million steps, totalling 4050km distance travelled with close to 2000km of it from running. Your channel was one of the things that kept me motivated all year long.
You're also the reason why I now run in New Balance shoes! So far this year I've worn out a pair of 430, an 880v12, a 1080v12 and a More v4. Right now I'm on my 2nd More v4 and a More Trail v3!

I'm with you Phily! I started my adult running journey in a December - because I wanted a change in my life, and I decided on a goal, and I was optimistic. This is now my 6th December of running so clearly it's been sustained! I also don't see the point of having some artificial marker to start something. I think new years resolutions are bad for exactly the "new year new me" reason. It's much harder to start and maintain a new habit if the reason is "I feel like I should" rather than "I want to." I think it's fine to set goals and explore the things you want to accomplish in the short term of the upcoming year, but trying to force yourself to start a habit never really works. You can only change when you're truly ready and willing.
I started running again in the summer (for the first time in 10yrs) because I wanted to, not because I felt like I should. And, importantly, I have stuck with it because I enjoy it, NOT because it's good for my health. That's just a nice perk.
Thanks for sharing, Phily. Your channel has been a huge inspiration for me as I train for my first marathon 😊

My coworkers and some friends thought I was weird for saying my resolutions kind of sandwich the New Year. I start a plan in the fall. Basically I signed up for runs sprinkled throughout the year, so that come January, I'm well into my plan, and doing all the things while everyone is mustering up the energy to start the New Year on a good foot.
I'm just going to keep doing what I've been doing.

I have a tip for keeping up a new habit! I reckon checking in with your goals past and new every month (mayyyybe even weekly) and maybe keeping a diary is extremely helpful, because it gives you data to analyse on how the goals are making you feel and what you may need to change in the execution:) And maybe writing a list of positive effects the new habit will have/is having on your life

I think some people need the added gravity of it being a new year to start something new or change part of their life in order for it to stick. Then they can say things like “I have not smoked this year” or "I have ran every day this year" or whatever it is. It is easier for people to compartmentalise old them and new them when the dividing line is a new year. Agree with the gripes about consumerism but let's not discourage new years resolutions because, for some people, they might actually work! P.s I’ve not drank alcohol for 350 days!

So the biggest issue I had with NY Resolutions is that I had to make many other adjustments in order to start the activity that I resolved to do. For example, if my resolution was running, I had to adjust my waking and sleeping times, try to eat more nutritiously, buy running shoes (if I didn’t have one) and sweat wicking socks, etc. My resolutions were usually more successful when I used January to lay the foundation and adjust my mindset towards the goal I wanted to achieve. By February, I could take the literal first step towards my actual goals.

In my younger years, I was in the gym all winter getting ready for the spring season. January would come around and the gym was PACKED with many dozens of new people. By the end of January, you wouldn't see 90% of them anymore. By April, you would see about five or so that managed to stay with it. It's such an unrealistic expectation.

Every January our running club runs a c25k program ( for free) as we know we will have 30-40ish folk come along. I’ve been with the club 2.5 years and although we have a reasonably healthy membership, I believe only 4/5 members are from the c25k groups. So you are spot on with the resolution thing. I don’t have an issue with New Year’s resolutions - like if you need the mental reset of a new year to motivate you then fair enough. But… couldn’t agree more with you about the marketing bull**** which makes people cane themselves for a few weeks, spend a load of money, and leaves them feeling knackered with no motivation. I feel like running (for me at least) is a good analogy (probably not the right word) for how to stick with resolutions (new year, mid-year, whatever-time-of-year). Every step, no matter how small or slow, is progress. The important part is that you keep making those steps because the progress adds up.
Ps… it’s ok to take the odd step backwards too

I took up running this past July. In Virginia. In the skin-melting heat and humidity. Honestly, that I stuck with it is kind of a miracle, because some of those first runs were at 5:45am when it was already 78F with 98% humidity. My lungs questioned if we had suddenly decided to become a fish, because the air was nearly unbreathe-able. Now that it's winter, and I am a person that LOVES cold weather, my condition is better, I can run longer, and I am in absolute heaven with running.
Which is all a long way of me saying: I agree. Start when you want.

  • @tkdsm1
    @tkdsm1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I’ve said for years that New Year’s resolutions don’t work when trying something new (different if you are already doing fitness and setting goals for the forthcoming year)
I’ve encouraged people to not put pressure on themselves during the winter months and look to make plans for spring.
It’s so difficult to find motivation (particularly in Scotland) to get out in winter to do something new when it is cold, dark and generally miserable.
Once you get to spring, the temperature is getting better, days lighter and you are surrounded by natural growth. You then have 8/9 months to allow habits to develop before you hit that first winter

  • @compo592

I agree regards new years resolutions , they are set to fail. People then rely on motivation, they lose motivation. Replace it with discipline.discipline is saying I will run that day ,that day and that day and then sticking to it like you would shifts at work. I have a chalkboard , split in half for me and my daughter, her days at college are written down as are my days at work. Then run, swim and bike sessions (I'm a triathlete) are written on. It's then just what I'm doing that day at that time ....whether I have the motivation or not I'm doing that

Phily is right, New Year resolutions NEVER work. The best tip in my book is to find group or buddy to run with. I have been running with the same buddy fir a long time. We run in all weather conditions, mainly because we all know the others will be there!! Good luck in your travels Phily.

New Year is the worst time to start diets/fitness kicks. It's dark, cold and your body hasnt eqaulised itself from the christmas binge. However, there is loads of cheap hardly used kit on Vinted come March 😄

The way I think about “the R word” is that it’s not something that I’m going to completely change about my life from 1st Jan, but something that I want to do without even thinking about by 31st Dec. Framing it like that has helped me change a few things over the years, including starting running, to the point where I now run 4 times a week (without thinking about it!) and I’ve entered the Seville marathon in Feb 2024 🏃‍♂️

New Years resolutions don't usually work. I have never stuck to them myself, but when I start something in the summer, then it's always turned out to be long term. The difference is that in the summer, it's not a pressure thing, it's based on desire. Whereas in the new year it's more of a "expected" thing that isn't something most people actually want.

Not sure if it was really a new years resolution as such or just a coincidence that i happened to start new years day! Comin up 3 years now and in my late 40's i had slowly slipped into a real bad state of unfitness and fatness and honestly did not realise how much until my dog ran off and i couldn't run 50m after her. I realised i had to do something and a few days later on 1st jan i sneaked out in works trainers and normal clothes so no one knew. Plan was to run a marathon distance over january which was a real struggle and i only just made it,but now seems a ridiculously easy challenge.Lots of pain i had to overcome and took about 3 months til i could go in a circuit (which was 5k)rather than out and back, but a few months later was doing half marathon distance runs in under2 hours, then did a parkrun to make sure i could tollerate people then entered a half, getting sub 1:45 just 9 months from starting.Earlier this year ran my first Marathon and despite recent injury and a cold for weeks on end i am nearly at 1100 miles this year. If i hadn't reached absolute rock bottom i dont think i would have been able to push through at the start. My little rescue dog may just have rescued my life too!

Personally I’m a fan of New Years Resolutions, I find New Year an ideal time to reflect and set new goals and challenges.
Now I didn’t achieve any of my running goals this year (mainly because I was over ambitious 😂), but I did set PBs in all my distances.
It’s about the journey not the destination right! 😉

Well here we just have more runners out at New Year because everyone is on holidays and the weather is warm. Although you're not likely to see them NY Day because well, it's the day after the night before. Or the morning a bit later than the the night that spilled over into the early morning 🎉 However mid year in the winter you see less. Except for those training for races, but they are the people that always run.

I did make running a NYR this year, but I had started back up in October, so my resolution specifically was to run a 5k race every month. Having a specific goal-oriented resolution helped a lot more than a vague "start running." By the end of the year I should have around 850 miles ran, including 2 half marathons, a quarter marathon, a 10k, 22 5ks, and 36 parkruns. 😁 (btw I DON'T recommend this, definitely felt burned out by the end of the year, and also was very broke from signing up for races. But I had a plan and I stuck with it and then some. But if you're just starting, a 5k race every month or so is waaaay more sustainable!)

Also stopped making NYR a while back. At first because it was destroying my already low self-esteem, but now it's simply because I don't want to. The idea of "new year new me" is not only BS but also mentally destructive. Nothing is going to change just because the earth is starting a new circle round the sun. Life just goes on, and believing that things are going to change based on a date on the calendar, only to see they are not, is just heartbreaking. It makes you feel you are the problem. The whole idea that we continuously need to be better, NYR apart, is quite destructive in itself. I'm not saying we should just stay the way we are, far from it, but maybe somewhere in the middle. Anyway, I randomly decided to stop drinking 6 months ago just for the experience (made the resolution 25 times without it sticking) and started running more consistenly since October 2022 (2 to 5 times a week depending on the week). Ran a 10k PB yesterday :) (54'34")
On the side note (and this is not criticism towards you at all), I watched several videos criticizing BetterHelp, I think it's worth watching. Had a horrible experience myself, but that's just anecdotal.
Thank you for your channel and for your down-to-earth yet very funnily-delivered way of approaching new habits, running, and life in general.
    Have fun in Flagstaff!

  • @thecaptainchas2820

I’m not wholly against NY resolutions. I just think many people take them up in unhealthful or unsustainable ways. Instead of making a big change for the new year, I think, “let me try one thing different.” It’s not Lent; it doesn’t need to be a sacrifice. It’s one change, and if it’s not a good fit, that’s something I learn.
This upcoming New Year, I will be three years alcohol-free. That didn’t come from a resolution to stop drinking. It just came from trying a dry January. That dry month turned into several months, then a year, and now three years. But that’s only because it was a good fit for me.
I agree that January 1st an arbitrary starting date, but it’s an easy mark on the calendar that might be just one more factor to get someone to change one thing and try it out. 🤷‍♂️

Too late - I started running at a tender age of 58 in January 2021 and did my first marathon the same year in end of October and no I am training for my 4th. That said I did not start because of a New Year's resolution but because I need to some alone time during the COVID lockdown because having 4 teenagers at home makes you slowly go mad.

NY resolutions are total garbage. Motivation doesn't exist, but habits do and obviously it doesn't matter when you start a habit. That being said, it's also incredibly, OFF THE CHARTS FLUNCHING BUSY 🤬 , before and during Christmas, that generally everyone feels like a bag of bin juice after Xmas, and so they feel like they need to try and sort themselves out. Hence why it always happens at NY. I think Xmas holidays can be a time to take stock though and that's what I do. Maybe write down some goals whilst eating some cheese, that sort of thing.
