- Ever wondered the thoughts that go through my head during a marathon strength and conditioning workout, well look no further. I bring you along to leg day at the gym mic up and give you all the juicy bits, this was a humbling session but S&C has been so key to my last marathon block. S&C keeps me injury-free and makes my body stronger for the constant abuse I put it through.

Just once again commenting that I love that you blur the calorie count :) In recovery and it helps so much to just not know
This was one of my favourite videos you have ever made. It made me laugh so hard, in a good way. Entertaining and informative. Great job Phily.
Aw thank you so much, I hope you’re laughing with me not at me 😉 I don’t mind either way haha
A few days in France and you're giving Metric measurements & getting Daniel to convert to imperial. You've changed Phil
We use meters for elevation in the uk! (And miles for distance)
Who would think a gym session, which many runners dread, could be so entertaining?! 😃Love the grind and yours and Daniel's humour. One of those French girls hovering nearby, was seriously strong. Nearly spat my coffee out when I saw her do that challenging squat with elbows /hands tucked under chin. She then made your pull ups look a little lack lustre. Still, you can do one more than most, Philly...or should that be 2?
Haha thank you! And yeah some seriously impressive French women lifting in there, pretty inspiring!
That "challenging squat" is literally just called a front squat. That's how you do it. Its simple. Every crossfitter and weightlifter can do that. She had good form but its not some kind of unique and unusual movement
Edit - she is probably either a weightlifter or crossfitter because she had weightlifting shoes on. Judging by her good technique I would bet she is a weightlifter
@@Jess-RabbitFront squat is literally more challenging than a back squat. It requires mobility, core strenght and of course quad strengt. Very challenging lift. Maybe not for you but for the average gym goer it is.
And that girl performing it was very strong. Why do you not wanna acknowledge that?
You saying it is simple is just not true.
Really appreciate that video. The sort of depth we need. Makes me realise I am using hopelessly light hip thrust weights.
Love these videos!
I did some nice arm and leg exercises watching this video! Thanks for the inspiration Phily!
I just want videos every day 🤣 you are the best energy to watch!
Absolutely loved this and got some great ideas for my next gym session! Would love to see more of these as they give me ideas of what I should be doing!
That was fun and reminded me to go back to the gym. Thank you!
This has reminded me that I need to do more (any) strength work! Trying to work on my single leg squats (ultimate goal is a pistol squat). Love the grind! Also - Daniel, that Captain Winters salute was so good! #BandofBrothers
Did love this one Phily, so funny. 🙌🏻😂
Sound looking program! Glad to see a runner being given a program that's not massively overcomplicated or putting too much emphasis on movements that cause uneccessary fatigue.
Thanks for sharing. I am running a half, but aiming for a full marathon soon 🎉
Agree with comment above think this is one of my fave vids you’ve done and def best running strength vid. Thanks
Aww thank you 🥹
Nice job!..I like these hip hinge exercise.. that would be a new one for me to add to my sessions:)
This was fun tow atch haha! and ur very strong, Phily!!
Bonus Bowden, happy Friday.
Trap Bar Deadlift 💪🏻 There's a great way to deload the bar too if some gym bro has been smashing huge weight. Tricky to explain here but TH-cam it! Loved the video, great to see what you do in the gym and potentially stuff for me to add!
Couldn't agree more with you Phily, runners hate gym sessions! ou looked like you were walking to the head masters office on your way there. Thanks for taking us along on your journey, love the grind!
Haha that’s a blast from the past, I definitely did that a few too many times at school 😉
Daniel’s editing remains goated
Best video 😂 More of these please 🙏
Very interesting, thanks!
Hi Philly! Can you do a micd up video of your mobility and conditioning routine??
Yeeaaah a video on Friday!
Double bubble this week! 🤠
Fantastic!
Tip for the lunges. Having a vertical shin helps you target your glutes more. If your knee is over your toes, it works your quads more
this feels so accurate and explains why I don't find the motivation to do it more often. You are not on your own with the singing planks. You definitely need something to pass the time
Swiss ball hammy curls are a killer! Great having company in the gym.
They burn!!
Really good video. Great to see so many different exercises.
One critique would be, maybe a little to many cuts. Although I feel bad saying anything bad about your videos, I don’t message you every time I really enjoy one. Keep up the great work both of you. 👍
Such fun 👏🏻
I would work out with you anytime! But I’d be laughing too hard! Thanks for this video, truly need to step up my workouts!
Such fun!
*insert meme very 30 seconds* haha
More videos together with Niamh, this seemed extra fun and playful!
Just rehabbing a torn calf - so appreciate the gym insight
Thoroughly enjoyed this!! I really need that bottle for the shake. Where can I get one pleeeese?
hurtie, love the band!
Seeing the two of you doing pull ups makes me feel better about myself. 😂 I can’t really do pull ups either.
hahahaha-- I thoroughly enjoyed this. I talk to myself everywhere I go already, maybe I should mic myself too someday.
Felt like I was watching a funny movie!! Think I formed a six watching you do your gym session 😂 had such a good laugh!! Really enjoying watching your videos.
Haha love this 😂
Preparing for a Spring Marathon next 8-10 weeks will ALL be base-building and strength training.
Cannot say I look forward to it... but IT MUST BE DONE. 😓😅💪
Love the grind! 💪🏼
I can tell that you are feeling self-conscious in the gym. I can tell because I always feel self-conscious too in the gym. You should do a video about it. It's interesting to me that even a professional athlete would feel self-conscious.
Quick question, what make is the gym bag, looks pretty cool. Love the vid by the way.
I love daniels editing, i dont think it would half as good with someone who doesnt get you like him. Great info as usual, love the grind!!!!
We make a good team 🥰
We salute the rank not the man
@paulj6637 huh??? Can you please explain that comment mate??? Bit cryptic lol
@@ianjones9322 Just the quote from a band of brothers scene that Daniel cut to. A nod to the skills 👌
@paulj6637 some of the edits were amazing weren't they, alot of humour in it lol thanks for taking the time to explain i missed that reference obviously 😄
Sam Sulek of running.
Also (I'm not an expert so bare with me) you might enjoy it better with different shoes (or even without any shoes if you feel comfortable). The running shoes with all the cushioning make your lifting feel very unstable, could even cause injuries. You can for instance see the bounce/instability in the deadlift side-shot.
Agreed. I was thinking: "when's she going to change her shoes?", until "Oh she's going to use running shoes, WHAAT?"
Oof those planks look brutal.
I'll try them this evening.
The music for the pull-ups was so appropriate lol... :D
Haha credit to the editor!
Great to see some S&C in your training. Might I suggest using some different shoes when lifting, though. Those Hokas with the massive stack height are great for cushioned running, but probably not the best for a stable base of support when you're lifting weights - unless you're aiming for deficit deadlifts :)
Thanks! They’re actually new balance trail shoes so the bottom is pretty firm. I could only fit 5 pairs in my suitcase so my gym shoes didn’t make the cut as others took priority!
@@PhilyBowden makes a lot of sense. Didn't think about the packing limit - shoes do take up a lot of space!
@@PhilyBowdenwhat gym shoes do you have?
Hahaha love that watch face!
This was so much fun. I love your humour. Do you know the sign of being cool? Sunglasses in the gym 😂
Haha if you say so!
Love it so funny
May be the most random question but what is the band for round the upper arm? Parker Valby had the exact same when she won nuttycombe and I’m so confused!
How long do you rest after each sets of plank?
hey phily, mind helping me with 2 questions? 1. how often do you recommend doing such a gym training when primarily being a runner? 2. would you say increasing max strength with squats is a good thing for your legs?
I go to the gym twice per week. In a marathon block I do one lift like this, and one session that’s more mobility/conditioning focused rather than lifts. And I can’t really say for the second question, I don’t know 🤷🏽♀️
thanks :-) @@PhilyBowden
All the influencers who film themselves in the gym need to take lessons from this. The filming here looked as unobnoxious as possible. Well done!
If you want a challenge, single leg hip thrusts are much harder.
Also one handed pull-up when
For what it's worth, your heart rate was probably higher than you were seeing. Wrist-based monitors are bad at picking up constantly fluctuating heart rates. When I lift, my heart rate appears to barely move, but I've put on a chest strap and I can see it shoot up briefly.
Shower and Next gym? 😮😮😮
0:39 We salute the rank, not the man.
Philly love this! I seriously need to know how not to throw up and have 💩 issues when I run a long way!!! I had an awful marathon but desperately want to enjoy another one! Help!!
Stomach issues, train your gut! My advice is bland food 48 hours before, high carb, reduce fatty/greasy foods and less natural laxatives like veggies. Boring but it works for me, but we’re all different!
2:28 Why were you getting stared at and by who? Could you please make a video about feeling self-concsious in the gym and worrying if people are looking at you or commenting about you?
I'm starting to feel like a weirdo bc I love running and I love lifting 😂
How much do you bench?
I don’t 😂
Trap bars can weigh anything up to 28kgs!
Well who knew! Wish they’d label them haha
I love gym work . . . I just hate gyms. Even at 4am there are too many people in mine so I hardly ever go. There are LOTS of TH-camrs that are either body builders or fitness professionals that have videos in empty gyms. Just where are these EMPTY gyms???
They probably rent them out!
Heart rate doesn't go up because pure anaerobic. CP and ATP only
"French people make some weird noises at the gym." 🤣
You've just alienated all your French viewers - wars have been started for less!
Entertaining viewing, however I will never be convinced to "love the gym." 😒
Haha I should’ve been more specific “one random French dude”! 😂
Who was with you?
My friend Niamh ☺️
Phily love the channel but the love of all that is holy don't lift weights in those moon shoes. Go minimal to strengthen feet and work on weaknesses.
Please don't lift heavy weights in soft squishy shoes😢 get some barefoot shoes
I like the 'carreer change' that you made, from serious amateur to some kind of a professional. But since about a month, I realise that you constantly remind me of trump, the failed former president, just like him you seem to take pleasure in whining. About almost everything.
About the weather, some else using the machine in the gym that you want to use, "i feel so tired today", and all sorts of things.....
😂 this is the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever read. I hope you’re ok dude, must have been a rough day for you
