I'm an RN Case Manager in a large hospital. All states have indigent burial services on a rotating system alternating mortuaries. This is covered by each state so no donations are needed for burials.
Let me tell you something telling people this doesn't matter. These people refuse to believe their are programs to help people. I have told people until i was blue in the face about charity care and they have replied we need to do health care for all. All because they refuse to fill out paper work. These people refuse to believe about any program and choose to believe the system is broken. Our system is not perfect and there are things that need to be fixed but let people tell it we are dystopian. So this is how these people became victims because it didn't cross their mind that this was far-fetched. Many people are out here walking around naive and it will cost them, their health and in some cases their life.

Also, the arrangements may have been subpar for them and may have wanted a better home going service so they asked for donations.
I don’t use Apple Pay, or whatever he used to do this, but it seems weird that the receiver is the one who determines the amount that is being sent? And, doesn’t the sender have to see the amount and then approve that amount before it is sent? If not, they should change that. There should definitely be a more clear approval from the sender.
Here in STL some guy that got his car stuck in the snow had a random person help dig him out then pulled a gun on him demanding his car keys. The world has gone absolutely mad

I used to help people, and still do on very rare occasions with a dollar or two if they really look like they're legitimately in need (unlike MOST of the ones I see these days) but not anymore. I trust NO ONE who approaches me who don't know. No one. This particular phone donation scam (not to mention the "help with a burial" one) has been around a long time. I just keep on walking after saying "Sorry, no" - IF I even say that, and I've found the more persistent the person is, the MORE unlikely they're legitimate. People really do have to start using the grey matter between their ears and quit being so damned naive. I am glad the guy's okay though. STOP EVEN ENGAGING PANHANDLERS at all.

Regardless, that doesn't excuse the extreme violence these people were subjected to. The fact they said they couldn't accept cash should've been a red flag. Likewise, this is Chicago, one of the most violent cities in the world, no sane human being would live there, much less trust anyone who lives there.

He's lucky to be alive. Not sure what he's expecting from Target. Whatever it is, don't bank on it. He's on his own. Hopefully he has very good medical insurance and an understanding employer.

It's not dangerous and it's actually the safest way to pay besides using something like a burner card, gift card, or privacy card. In order of how secure it is: Most secure: Samsung/Apple/Google Pay. These *_DO NOT_* use your card number. They use a virtual card number assigned to each card on your phone. So, if I use it at Costco and Costco gets compromised/hacked/data breach, etc, they might get the virtual card number, but not your actual card, which saves you from ordering a new card. More secure: tap & pay with a credit/debit card. This method is fine if you don't have Samsung/Apple/Google Pay, but you should use it as a backup in case your phone isn't working. Least secure: swiping and/or inserting your card with the chip. Try to avoid at all costs.
Samsung/Apple/Google Pay are actually most secure for in person transactions. Next slightly less secure is tap & pay with your card. Then, the worst is inserting the chip or swiping.
It's ONLY dangerous if you don't finish your bank transaction at an ATM, or don't check to see how much you're about to be charged for. Those are realistically, the only fears people should fear. People don't really have credit card skimming devices that use tap & pay, yes, they do exist, but they're more expensive and require some expertise and are just not common. Especially because someone can leave a physical skimmer laid over the actual device and it'll be collecting many cards without having to physically be there, actively attempting to steal people's info.

When a person get a new debit card or credit card. They need to set a certain amount for transactions & if it goes over that amount set, the person should get a call or text to verify & approve that amount. Remember, quit thinking that this type of stuff will never happen to you, cause it can.
