Leah - my OTHER NOTE - Here in Sonoma Country Wine Country - I had a nice couple ask me to paint a bedroom in a VERY CUTE house. The bedroom had the walls and ceiling painted BLACK and RED - I mean HIGH GLOSS BLACK and HIGH GLOSS RED!! The walls were red. The trim around the windows, the switch covers and outlet covers were black and THE CEILING WAS A CHECKERBOARD of RED AND BLACK!!! Squares that were approx 2 ft on each side. The room had been painted very neatly and accurately - probably a young musician! Well - they wanted me to paint the ceiling WHITE and the walls a lovely BEIGE. Well - I did TWO COATS of PRIMER and then did the paint. FUN JOB!!!

I remodeled my house 3 years ago. I made a room into a "music room".
I set the music room up as a sort of nostalgia 1970ish style. I did put barnwood for 3 of the walls and painted 1 wall a lihjt brownish color.
Then I was debating on what to do about the ceiling. Like I was saying, I wanted to give it this nostalgia 70s look and was going to paint the ceiling black. Yes I said black.
The idea I had was to paint it black and then installed many tiny bulbs in random area. The bulbs would have had a dimmer to brighten or dim the bulbs to make it look like stars in the sky at night. Then one day I went to a nursing home and saw an elderly person staring at the ceiling and I looked to see what was going on...... it was a laser light projector that can be set to create the Milky Way galaxy or just set it up to show slow moving star showers going across the celiing. Now that I saw this video, maybe it might have been a good idea that I did not paint the celing black after all

Coming from a painting contractor, Yes, the flat paint will hide imperfections. The reason flat is preferred is the light coming from outside (windows) will reflect from the windows into your eye unlike most of the walls and the ceiling is huge and almost anywhere you stand in the room you could get a refection from a sunlight bouncing off the ceiling into your eye.
