    we had a chap delivering a load in our yard few months ago and his 20 plate Renault managed to fry both the ECU's that control the rear half of the truck so no suspension control and when the tech plugged in the truck didn't know it even had a tag axle. poor guy was stuck for 14 hours waiting for a pair of ecu's.
    this kind of crap is why i still run a 2004 164 480 only ever had wearing parts changed, lot to be said for simplicity and quality.

    So sorry to hear your Scania broke down. Had the same problem with my 2012 PGR- Scania 5 years ago. Luckily for me the dealer had the right ECU in stock after which it was a 'plug-and-play'-thing. Truck was repaired in approximately 3 hours... And I agree, the airconditioning on the older PGR worked way better than the one in my new NGS Scania. Nonetheless I wish you many safe km's! Cheers from Belgium!

    I have been driving Scania Trucks since 2017 I bought a R620 and I got the 1.1 million km warranty plan I’ve had very few issues with it only a diff at 990000 km it’s now just hitting 1.1 million km I have a new 2024 r650 coming in the next few weeks to replace it I’m hoping it preforms like the old one has.

    I really think OEMs are not spending as much time in testing as they used to.
    Additionally, they apply components on their specifications limit.
    Therefore, these systems fail quite more often than past ones did.
    What you experience has been the norm in many vehicles, starting on cargo vans.
    Cargo vans share a lot of parts with passenger cars, especially the smaller ones.
    Regardless, these small vans run quite more than cars, meaning, they will show their true colors sooner.
    I have been seeing many delivering companies using rental vans more regularly, as their own vans breakdown and go to the dealer to get fixed.
    One can argue that this is due to regulations on emissions.
    I feel that it may have something to do with it, as more complex systems shall be implemented - such as AdBlue and DPF - however, I feel OEMs need to test more, and sell a reliable product.
    Otherwise, people will look for alternatives in order to get reliable products, and predictive revenue.
    Regarding AC, I really feel that to improve fuel consumption, AC on cars has gotten quite less effective than it used to be.

      I've got a BMW 335xd estate which isn't that old and it's a lovely car but like most modern stuff it's over-designed and under-engineered. It's a constant frustration that stuff which has been reliable on cars for years now isn't, all because someone decided to get clever and save 0.1% fuel economy, or 0.1% of some other minor thing so you end up with lots of broken or sub standard parts which cause massive frustration on a regular basis. It's not just a BMW thing though, almost every modern car is like this. For other reasons I want to go back to a 'truck' (i.e a pickup or a proper SUV) but none of the new stuff ticks the boxes as they're not only crazy money, but have daft wee engines in them or are so lightweight that they'll break quickly (and that's discounting any of the 'common major issues' that most cars now seem to have). So I'm going older and simpler and more reliable. Even the new Hiluxes aren't a patch on the previous generation.

      @@almac414 I stopped considering Diesel engines for city use - and my Diesel-powered car only does highway driving.
      For city driving, I have a small car with a gasoline (petrol) engine, as the downside of more fuel consumption is outweighed by the cheaper maintenance costs.
      A Diesel engine in the '90s was a no brainer!
      Today, only in small use-cases.
      Let's not talk about EVs, as I dislike being an early-adopter, and paying the price of being a beta-tester for OEMs.

      @@hitardowhat added maintenance? I would always choose diesel over petrol. Much better economy and they used to have longer service intervals

    • @hitardo
      @hitardo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Horizon301. I do not know exactly where you live, so, my answer shall be quite different from your reality.
      I will keep that in mind.
      Petrol engines produce high levels of CO2, while Diesel produce quite low CO2.
      For years, due to this simple understanding, we thought Diesel engines were the solution.
      Therefore, here in Europe we pushed hard on Diesel engines for everyone - and consumer loved it, due to the two things you mentioned, coupled with higher torque.
      However, we then found that Diesel emit lots of other pollutants, namely NOx and PM 2.5 (particles).
      Due to Europe incentivizing Diesels, there was major health issues inside our cities, with ever growing issues of lung cancer and asma.
      Therefore, the European Union (EU) restricted the level of emissions of NOx and PM 2.5, compounding with the limits on CO2.
      To comply with this regulations (Euro 3, 4, 5, and so on), car manufacturers (OEMs) had to fit various systems to control those emissions.
      On Diesels, there was:
      - EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), which often clogs up;
      - DPF (Diesel Particle Filter), which often clogs up, especially if driven in urban environments;
      - Common-rail (e.g., dCi, HDi, CDI, etc...), which increased the fuel pressures in a matter of 10 times;
      - AdBlue (or DEF, Diesel Exhaust Fluid), which is another system post-exhaust, which has to be maintain and filled up.
      Therefore, in an urban environment, Diesel engines clog up quite fast, requiring really expensive maintenance, because the tolerances have gotten so tight, and the fuel pressure involved has gotten really high (1300+ bar).
      Nowadays, AdBlue (or DEF) costs shall be included in the running costs of a Diesel engines, and not only Diesel fuel.
      Moreover, Diesel engines use a double-mass flywheel - while the gasoline engines use a traditional one, which is quite cheaper to buy and fit.
      Even gasoline (or petrol) engines with Direct Injection start (e.g., FSI, TSI, GDI) to clog up quite fast when driven slowly in urban environments.
      Please, do not focus solely on fuel economy.
      I have seen many friends who focus on fuel economy, and then spend on maintenance double or triple what they have saved on fuel.

      @@hitardo I’m aware of the DPF potential for issues however I’ve not experienced it personally, my experience is only with VW thought for the most part and a 730D albeit that was sold before any issues could crop up. 50k or so miles on an Audi doing short drives and no such issues and a family member barely driving theirs, 12k or so miles in nearly 4 years and very short drives of 10 or so mins. When a flagship bmw is more economical than a petrol hathcback and far superior in terms of performance, it makes you value diesel a lot more. We have two petrol cars now and only one diesel compared to all diesel and it’s the same scenario of the bigger more powerful car being the most economical. It can be noted that service intervals are both 20k or so now for both so that’s less so an issue for VAG thus it’s mostly the fuel economy that makes me miss diesels.
      Edit: I will agree regarding the adblue situation that it has added a lot of complexity to systems and it is a very big failure point for vehicles, that alone is a reason I can see why people would want to avoid. If new and in warranty though, you can be sure I will choose diesel.

We had to try tease it into a gear for what seemed like ages, until we got 4th, then we had to drive it through Galway City. Somehow got back to base and then the long wait for a repair, only for it to fail again in Newmarket on Fergus. Managed to get it into 4th again and hope. An absolute nightmare.

    Come on Stavross. Not like you to get down. You’ve been in the business long enough to take it in your stride. At least everyone chipped in and no service delays or money lost hopefully.
    I have a Mack with 60,000 miles on it with the check engine light on continuously, the DPF sensor telling me it needs a parked regen but will not set itself up to do one. No one can clear the codes👎
    The sister Mack both 6x2s with pusher axles threw a center bearing and dropped the drive shaft last Thursday, still at the dealers.
    A brand new Volvo this morning threw an electrical fault code preventing it from starting. Had to disconnect the ground lead to reset the ecu and clear the fault. I only run three and all three have had issues this week. No dealers open and if they were there is a three plus days waiting time to have it looked at let alone fixed. The sensors seem to fail periodically. Give me a TD100F in a F88 any day of the week or even better a TD120F in a F12. Simple and reliable. Labor costs at my service vendor are $135 per hour. No R&M contracts here👎. Just another week in paradise😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇸

    sadly that's what happens to newer vehicles with more complicated function installed in the name of boosting more fuel efficiency etc etc making it less and less possible to fix them on your own. And they are pretty brittle that low quality fuel would easily break them. A reason why I'd rather spend my money on used double cabin powered by old indirect injection diesel engine rather than getting my hand on brand new cars with Common Rail engine, heck I'd trust myself on those carburetor more than the ECU and Fi system =_=

  • @Mmoukarii

    12:15 similar thing with our Scanias, the old 2015 P410 has way colder air con than my 2022 420P. 🤔
    Also, similar ecu issue happened to two Scanias in my previous job, one truck being from 2017 and the other from 2018. No idea what caused the malfunction but both trucks lost all of their electrics and had to be towed to the service to get their ecu's replaced. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      What's your opinion on Iveco objectively? The new S-Way looks dope and reminds on Scania a little bit and the HI-Way is a good looking truck all around. I know many people hate Ivecos but I never understoold the reasoning behind it. Is it really that bad? I am seeing HI-Ways on the road every single day and they look amazing, especially plain white with chrome trimms.

    I had the power relays give up in my DAF this winter, causing all functions on the dashboard to fail, very exciting in -20°c.
    Only thing that worked was the tachograph and some work lights whose switches were next to the tacho.

    Damn, that truck is limited to 89 kmh which is 55 mph. I’m not from Europe/UK so that seems slow.

    • @thechongwolla
      @thechongwolla ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some companies set their limiters as low as 50mph.
      We don't have many long straight stretches of motorway in the UK so I wouldnt feel safe going any faster than 60mph in a truck but thats just me.

      They have to be limited in the EU, I'm not too familiar with the rules in the UK. But the speed limit for trucks is 80km/h (around 50mp/h) on the highways here in the Netherlands, Most do around 85-ish.
      Some companies have them limited anywhere between 80 and 85. 90 is the absolute max. In a lot of cases, With how crowded it is and all,
      There isn't really a need or use to go faster anyway.

    These electronics are a disaster. Way too sensitive, I’ve got a brand new western star that’s never been out of the shop since new four months ago, just found out it’s the bunk inverter that’s messing with the cpc(ecu) that’s causing all the problems!
