Yes. Most simply "play the game", because that's what everyone ELSE is doing. But as long as money is sent, money gets spent, and that way, people can claim that advertisements were run. And advertisers can say that maybe the product wasn't desired by customers. Easy money.

I thought the same thing when i was helping my mum play candy crush and kept getting the sa adverts over and over and over. One of them was a small company that she recently bought a wool hat from, obviously they paid for google advertising, and all their money for their google marketing budget probably got eaten up just by my mum being forced to watch their advert over and over and over and over again to get free power up. When she was no more likepy to buy from the company that she already knows exists and looked at their products.
I felt like emailing the company, but i had no proof they were being ripped off.
But now this report has come out i will be emailing them about it.

I spent the last month or so testing out TH-cam without adblockers. I have been subjected to some videos with multiple unskippable 15-second ads before the video plays, another ad before even getting 1 minute into the actual video, and many scam ads. There are more scam ads than legitimate ones. It's so bad, even my antivirus pops a warning about some of the ads that play in the TH-cam player without me clicking on them. Google doesn't even mind spamming their users with actual scams! This is why I want adblockers.

For real, some google ads are a complete joke. My elderly father in close to his 70s showed me an AI made 'Elon' ad of him advertising a special opportunity for work/investment on TH-cam, Google doesn't do due diligence with their ads whatsoever. Many of these ads are purpose built to prey on the elderly/more gullible kind and Google also profits on them. Funnily enough, this is the exact opposite to most people. Humans are creatures that like familiarity. On average, repeated exposure to a product, whether that be music, food, or an ad, usually increases familiarity with the product, and the likelihood of them liking the product, and thus buying, increases. Because we all know, if given the chance, these same companies would have done exactly what Google has done. They follow the easy way, bulk purchase of advertising space, in opaque environments, and limit themselves to buying the big players (FB, YT, other big nets) that perform more or less the same (which is a shitty result) so they can say "see, our campaign is slightly over average, so we are doing OK". As long as the junior planner/purchaser can show decent result to his boss, who can then show a decent result to his manager, who can present decent result to the client´s marketing exec, who can present decent result to his VP, nothing will change. And the ecosystem is rotten, so many tech layers, each one grabbing his share of the budget, everyone interested in keeping the thing going on...

car and truck ads make little sense to me. Does, for example, Ford think the next time I’m looking to buy a car I’m going to choose them because they’re showing me 20 ads during every football, basketball, etc. broadcast and Chevy, et all “only” show 15? But then again, I’ve never personally been brand loyal. A company has to continue winning my business, I’m not just giving it to them because I did in the past.

I know what you're trying to say, but vast majority of people do not make everyday choices like you (think you?) do. Advertising is more akin to subliminal messaging and suggestion than anything else. People trust familiar things, and when the time comes to choose something, they choose the one they 'already know", as in, the one whose name they've heard over and over again. They don't think about it, so it doesn't matter they heard it from an annoying ad. You just need to get people to subconsciously associate a need with your product, that's all. I bet advertisers know this, and thus don't really care wether people click their ads or not. Obviously it depends on the service and ad, but you know what I'm trying to say. Ads don't really work on people who buy things based on recommendations and research instead of intuition and a whim. Then again, the people who recommend something might've been pulled in by ads etc. Advertising is weirdly complicated phenomenon considering how simple, silly and annoying it is.

This method works really well, and is primarily done by the store itself because they know if they discount popular items they get people to buy them even if they could live without them. So in the end the store itself advertise better for the company products, through discounts, than the companies ever could advertise themselves with just brand awareness.

I totally agree on your last statement: "if a business depends on ad revenue to stay alive, look elsewhere". This literally means you have a bad product that doesn't sell and you have to rely on ads to stay afloat. A good product will sell itself without ads everywhere. I bought a cnc machine in Canada from Sienci Labs. I haven't seen any ads from them but their business is thriving, just from mouth to mouth and a few videos on youtube. I saw Garrett Fromme standing on the gantry of such a machine while operating it manually to prove the rigidity of the machine and he's not even working for them and this caught my attention and started investigating this machine by watching more videos about it and even chatting with other people in their facebook group. All without the help of ads, trying to shove stuff down my throat I don't even need. And most ads are really useless anyways and i have no idea why they exist in the first place. If someone has a daughter growing up, which tampons will she buy eventually? The ones shown on tv in a few ads or the ones her mother uses? When you buy a car, do you wait to get insurance until you see an ad, or do you search for a good and affordable insurance yourself and compare a few before you decide? When you want to buy a car, do you simply order the car you just saw on an ad, or do you go out and visit a few car sales shops and see what they offer? I did that and went to a car sales shop and asked what they could offer that can pull a 900kg caravan easily, has lots of space, has AC built-in, and can seat at least 4 people and they showed me the Renault Kangoo, took me for a testdrive and I was sold. Even when I saw hundreds of car ads previously, none could persuade me to buy any of them as they all show the same, a car driving on a straight road (what all cars can do) without even showing off any unique features no other car has. In my opinion, ads are mostly lost money anyways.

The moment I saw Yotube being aquired by Google, I knew it will go bad! That is what they do with everything they got. I still cannot figure if it is on purpose to destroy competitors, or it is just pure incompetence in managing a large business. Add to that the fact they have stakeholders, which already want their money back.

I am so convinced that TH-cam shows us the worst ads possible so we will get the premium version. Like why do ads I skip and remove show up way more compared to the ads I like?
And one day, I went to the ad page to see why I've been seeing the inappropriate ads I've seen and according to TH-cam and Google, none of those ads where the inappropriate ones I've seen.

  • @ThreeTrillionTrees

I had a feeling this would happen.
Only a matter of time before the actual impact of ads is realized and their value plummets.
It’s the entire basis of social media at this point and we need to shift the paradigm.
The idea of user data having value was a bit foreign, but now with AI needing data to be trained..

So if a company becomes too successful, it should be nationalized? I cant own my company because too many people want my service?

That's the problem with a lot of things: when there's only one game in town, you have no choice but to play. My US State only has one power company. They can do whatever they want to us, and we just have to shut up and take it because the alternative is buying cans of gasoline and a generator.

Just a side note on the adblocking war - remember Google basically controls Chrome, and their push of manifest v3 has diminished adblocking capabilities in the extensions. They will definitely clamp down further for Chrome.

Then they will try to block addblocks, which will not work on firefox as it is not based on Chromium, which is going to make people change their browser to firefox further decreasing Google control over market.

I hate that these companies, like almost all politicians, feel like they must never show weakness or admit to making a mistake. They always have to project strength and competence even when the opposite is blatantly obvious in their actions. I have much more respect for someone who admits that they are wrong than someone who tries to bullshit me.
