How Bad Is The PT-76?

  • There are plenty of awful tanks in War Thunder, but I didn't think the Soviet PT-76 light tank would be among them. It's got a dual axis stabilizer at 5.3, how could that be below average? Fairly easily, apparently. Suffice to say, stock APCR is not fun.

which is something gaijn fucks up consistently. Instead of pushing a tank up .3 or .7 BR and buffing its stats, they nerf it and keep/drop it by .3 or .7 and it just isn't working. They need to decompress quickly before the game dies, it is reaching a criticality point, and we are consistently getting scenarios like half the enemies that tiger 1's IS-1's and jumbos fight use HEAT or sometimes APDS. Fast moving light tanks and cars from the 1960's swarm and easily destroy tanks designed and built in the 40's, and the only thing that stops THEM are your own team's 60's vehicles-- but wait, you're at 5.3 and have no premiums, so you're not getting any of that yet. Sorry, you must suffer instead.

When I used to main the thing in arcade, id always (ALWAYS) brawl with it, going straight to the point and just aiming the hull at one tank, waiting for them to rico, then aiming to another while they reload, and then the cycle repeats. I recently tried it, however maybe the playerbase gained a few extra braincells or something because I get penned now. This happened when I got uptiered aswell, except facing leos and that. The PT-76 is honestly (and oddly) one of my favorite light tanks to play for the reasons you mentioned. Good mobility, good gun stability and a decent HEAT-FS round all at BR 5.3. Sure the stock grind was abysmal at first with the APCR but when I adjusted my tactics (and expectations) even that wasn't the worst stock grind in a game I've ever experienced. Never really used the APHE rounds because looking at their performance on paper made me nauseous. You did forget one of the *major* upsides the HEAT-FS has- Hullbreaking Hellcats. Even with it's stupidly long reload for a light tank with a 76mm gun because of that mechanic and good positioning I've stopped entire flanks of early-game M18 spam.

I think that PT fills a very useful role as a support vehicle. When upgraded it has good mobility so it's useful of caping objectives. You can help your team (and earn assists) by scouting. The heat round may not be a guaranteed one-shot but it's amazing for disabling and challenging heavy German tanks that are often invincible from the front when using APHE

the jp4-5 used to have stock apcr, but it was terrible so they thought it would be a good idea to remove the apcr and replace it with nothing so now all it has stock is 90mm hesh with cant pen anything except really light tanks, so now its even worse

I actually played several games with you as you were using the PT-76. I was hoping to see myself in your video but alas it was not meant to be. 😁 Of course, I didn't follow you around though so I guess it wasn't likely. I don't have the PT but it seems like on paper it should be good but I have not heard good things about it. If you don't have a ton of success with it, I am sure it would be hell for a middle of the road player such as myself.

Chinese PT-76 is an experimental tank (just like the WZ-121 aka Type 62), it is a program where they are trying out their own technology to counter the BMP-1, the tank isnt made for combat, but it can do damage if it is suddenly in war.

As a player who heavily relies on the PT-76B (to the point that I main it in my 5.3 lineup), I agree with the "cool garbage" statement. It's main issue (in my opinion) is the 10 sec stock reload (76mm), putting it behind the Panther (75mm), the Tiger (88mm), and even the Tiger II (88mm). It really could use a reduction of 1-1.5 seconds, which would put it on par with the avarage reload.
Another problem (as said in the video) is the stock grind. The APCR and APHE are effectively useless, and mobility is below avarage for a light tank. The HEAT-FS is better, until you're up against a Tiger II, which is when you gotta flank (using your "mobility").
It's armor is basically a *light* light tank, 10-15mm is only useful against APHE (they sometimes just act like AP due to their fuse).
The stabilizer is a welcome (and useful) advantage for the tank, the NVD is mostly useless. The engine generated smoke screen is a must-use if you want to escape any situation alive. The amphibious ability (as usual) doesn't really change anything.
Overall, I've found that your best bet is to act as a "second turret" for the closest heavy/well armored medium you can find, scouting and shooting anything you see, helping them repair, and capping points. And *always* make sure that you have at least one or two allied tanks infront of you. And by scouting, you also also get a quick plane for yourself (maybe even a glorious Pe-8 with FAAB-5000)

For assist missions i usually play British tanks, those less lethal APDS will do critical damage and not kill the tanks especially if you intentionally (or not) miss the ammo racks, the Comet is a good choice for example

  • @Supercohboy
    @Supercohboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

This thing is honestly fun with the anti-meta lineup that you can make at 5.3-6.3. PT76, the tank destroyer that's basically a gun on tracks with a super slow turret turn rate and basically 0 armor, plus an IS-2. Of course the AA of that br range is fun in combination as well, iirc it has good gun pen and a slow rare of fire but when you get air kills with it, it's very satisfying.
I can't recall the vehicle names and uninstalled the game, sorry for anyone trying to decipher which vehicles I'm referring to.

Dear lord, the travesty. But once APHE and after that, HEAT-FS is unlocked, its fairly decent.
I think it also has night vision, but you never end up in night games around that tier/br.
The Heat-FS basically pens everything around that BR and even 1.0 up. It's still 'good' in 6.3 as well, so uptiering is no problem.

Also i even bring it up to uptiers up to 7.3 and it works great even up there.

The best use I've found for it was to hull break M18s during events when players would rush caps with them, the last time I played it was when I was grinding for BT-7A F-32 so idk if the HEAT round is capable of over pressuring the M18 crews with the new system.

I seriously think its great, keeps up with other tanks, great stabilizer, great pen, shells wont detonate in you (most of the time)
The biggest down sides to be are the painful APCR grind and the poor post pen effects of the actually good round, and the arguably kind of slow reload time.
Once you spade it and get the crew upgraded I would say its one of Russia's better rank IV's that can hold its own against rank V's.
Biggest plus (for me atleast) is that it absolutely thrashes any light tank you come across, so if you are decent at guessing ranges it makes sniping fast tanks pretty easy
