Brother, this video saved my life, I saw it and the other ones long time ago and started practice, couple days ago I was so close to a disaster but thanks to this technique I get out of it safe, thank you man.

So he says taper off the rear break, so did he pressed the rear break first then the front ? not at the same time ?
@@mariafarinas3595 no he means to use a little less rear brake as you near the end of your braking
@@pringleboyo2460 thanks!!! I just started riding last summer
@@MotoJitsuwhen emergency braking are you letting the bike stall or shifting at all or are you just worrying about the braking
Too much rear has been my bad habit. These videos are a great help to realize my errors. My last accident was a braking emergency on the freeway. I went down before I impacted another vehicle. I think I went down because I looked down and that saved me from smashing into a car who stopped on the freeway because a big spool flew off a trailer. Full gear, no injuries. Broken clutch lever and a scratched windshield. It could have been much worse
You are helping me so much! I am spreading the word about you as much as I can
Thank you Max!
Quality content! I just started riding and your videos have significantly helped make things much easier. You deserve way more subs!!!
Thanks! Help out by telling your friends about my videos and sharing them with others :)
How fast can a rider stop? "Shut up and practice" is Eddie's solid advice! Constant practice is the only way to become a better and safer rider. Thank you, Eddie, you're saving lives!
:)
I new and could do these technics 35 years ago quit riding for about 15 years went out and bought twice as heavy and now I'm seeing that I really need to practice practice practice I've been watching ride like a pro also between you both I'm back on the right path thanks for your videos I especially like your ones on trail breaking
awesome!
Thanks Greg! Practiced this today with a non ABS Honda CBR 600 and even got the rear end to lift at the end with the fourth try. Would not have dared to do this without this video.
Love," Make sure stupid is actually stopping". This tip has saved me twice having an escape path and making sure stupid is stopping...thanks
You're welcome!
This just saved my bacon tonight on the way home. I live up in the hills in LA where the streets are windy and narrow and poorly lit. I came around a blind corner to find a moving truck parked on the wrong side of the street with no lights on. Thank you.
The problem is you see a thousand videos of people locking up the front and the bike violently bodyslamming itself, and as a new rider it makes you terrified of pulling the front brake too hard. I lock up my rear all the time accidentally but at least I'm starting to get a real good feel for when it locks up, and it seems like it's only slightly more effective than engine braking. I cover the front brake and baby it (just enough) to do the necessary stopping when the rear doesn't cut it. Emergency stopping at 20 miles an hour is fine - daily lanesplitting basically requires it. What I'm worried about is stopping as short as possible at 70 miles an hour, and how am I supposed to practice that? - I've only tried once out of necessity (on the freeway in the right side fast pass lane) and I remember the moment I realized that if I didn't squeeze harder I was going to crash, so I squeezed just hard enough to stop about 2 feet from the car in front of me. My first thought was I wish I could have practiced that before it happened.
Why not watch videos of people practicing really good braking instead of crashing videos? lol if I'm going 70mph, I'm not going to do emergency braking...I'll swerve. Pretty much anything over 30mph, swerving will be your better option.
Then can start on a bicycle - the same technique applies :-)
The technique is the same, no matter the speed.
I'v taken my bike to 200kmh and practiced stopping as fast as i can.
I agree your better option is to swerve, but i'v had situations on the autobahn where both lanes suddenly were blocked, gotta say i was happy that i had practiced stopping at high speed.
Start out easy and do it many times, the bike wont suddenly do something strange, completely the same as when done at 30mph.
@@Surpriseify the autobahn is a scary place to have to stop fast on a bike, when you're relying on the cars behind you to do the same thing😬
Have a problem looking down and stumbling ..thank you sir!!!
more practice!

Heh brother, I just went for my first ride on my Suzuki boulevard 1500, and just want to say your vids have been invaluable in giving me confidence and inspiration as I practised the techniques. I haven't ridden since my teens, apart from an e'bicycle, which helped, but Your advice and steady teaching method continues to be really helpful. Thank you and God bless you and your family always.
The more I practice emergency breaking the better I feel in the streets ( and much more fun dhaa!). I have a routine of practice which for now emergency breaking dominates before I do anything I go many many rounds of it every day I go out. Thanks to you, I watched these videos before but now refreshed info looking at it again and will keep working on the technique forever, to the black belt and then keep going. As you said, 3-5 times a week minimum to practice, I believe it's best just to have a habit of it every time I go out riding. Thanks a lot again. Your videos took me from dead zero level only a couple of months ago to a progressively more skilled and happy rider. I was lucky to find you and get information from you from the ground zero. Keep it up, man! :)
Smart! :)
This video just saved my life, literally. I hadn't been on a bike in 20+ years and once I started riding again about a year ago, I watched this video (subsequently subscribed and watched a lot of your videos) and made a habit to practice short, panic stops. Well, this morning on my way to work, a young girl stopped very suddenly in front of me. I was able to squeeze the brake without grabbing it and manage the foot brake without high siding. Not enough distance, (my fault most likely) so I still hit her, but am definitely alive and not all busted up. Thanks.
Did the girl survive?
@@andrewkerage8509 Really ended up being minor thanks to proper braking, thank you. Just a dented bumper for her but my bike was totaled unfortunately. Yoke for handlebars snapped (Buell 1125 CR).
I had to stop fast this weekend to avoid crashing into a person and I stalled. Not the end of the world except I was middle of a railway crossing and there was train coming pretty close! I'm still here which means I managed to start my bike and get out of the way... But my story illustrates why one should practice emergency stop until it becomes a reflex - and why it is important not to stall.
Wow, yes practice practice then practice more!
I have an electric motorcycle and I turned off the limiter so I can go faster up to 100 KM and one day I was going 70 at a sharp turn and my back tire gave way with some dirt and I went right into a ditch planting my bike into the dirt and me flipping right off my bike forward, if it wasn't for my helmet I'd be dead. I was also only on my second month of riding so I was still new to it and still learning :)
Today, I was riding in the right, slow lane, and a car was in the left lane. All of sudden I see the car making a last-minute change into the right lane, making me swerve and to emergency brake. Still managed to drop my bike and I having minor cuts and bruises. However, as you advocate all the time here, I was wearing my full gear - armoured jacket, gloves, riding boots, and full-face helmet. Even though the bike dropped, it suffered very little damage. With the help of some "Good Samaritans" who just happened to own a bike repair shop, they fixed the minor repairs on my bike such as my handlebars were slightly bent and they straightened them for me along with adjusting my headlight and turn signals. They are really amazing people who are U.S. Military Veterans such as myself. Shout out to Thunder Alley Dundee in Clovis, New Mexico. I appreciate everything they have done for me.
:)
Thank God for you I just star practicing on a V-Star 1100 and stopping is definitely a technique I want to feel more confident with in the parking lot before hitting the streets
More people need to see this and learn it. It's still astonishing how many people overvalue the rear brake on a motorcycle, and that their first instinct is to slam down with their right foot. It's not a car.
exactly!!

Greg! Just met Bobby from Total Control at the NY Motorcycle Show and she said she knows you! They have a course in Poughkeepsie, NY that’s only about an hour away from me. And just found out that California Super bike schools comes to a track in NJ. So excited to take these courses!
Yes! I've known her since I started riding, she's great! :) Awesome!
You motivated me bro. I’ve been riding for 4 years but haven’t once practiced or taken another course apart from the beginner one. I’m in CT so we’re in winter months but I’m so excited to start as soon as spring hits!
That's great Edgar!!
Got spooked today after I skid my rear when I looked up and needed to instantly stop. Been riding for 4 years but still need to keep learning. Thanks
If you don't practice emergency braking weekly, you're setting yourself up for failure.
Hello. This video saved me today from dying. I was on my non-ABS CB400 at 40mph when an unaware pickup truck from a gas station suddenly entered and blocked my way to cross the opposite lane, I went to full stop using progressive front braklng that you exactly taught in this vid with only 3 meters remaining space between the truck. My rear wheels lifted for a split second until full stop, Luckily no one's tailing me. I want to say thank you very much for your content and I hope more motorcyclist (and car drivers) will be aware of your advocacy.
Did you downshift as well or no time to do that?
@@Jonq9933 You can downshift after you stop, the only reason why some bikers tend to downshift while braking (it takes practice as well) is cuz if someone is behind you and they are not stopping if you are in first gear you will be able to move and avoid them, while if you stop in 5th gear no way in hell you will be able to move that bike until you downshift to 1st/2nd gear and someone might hit you from behind
Excellent education! Short, simply explained and with superb demonstration. When I learn, I do so visually... so these demo vids are invaluable and give me a starting point with actual practice. Thankyou! ✌️
thanks!!!!
If you haven't already, check out MotoJitsu.com for my new app, books, merch, etc.
Super useful as always :) .Thanks for confirmation thats its ok to do a slight stoppie. I always thought that when my back wheel lifted off the ground slightly when breaking hard (without jerking the break in unevenly), I must be doing something wrong.
You’re welcome
I had never thought about tapering off, going to try thst out. Thank you!
Just with the rear...watch my other vides about braking too :)
I was surprised, the first time I practiced emergency braking, I skidded the rear like 10 feet. Huh! Improving. So grateful that I ran across these vids as a new rider. Practice before you need it on the street!
Yes, most people do that....takes a lot of practice to get good at braking (or anything else) when you need it, like in an emergency.
Yet another crucial life saving lesson on applying emergency breaks...,thumbs up for the superb job.... quick quip... there are less than 10 BMW super bikes like yours in my country!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for all of your videos, I've learned a lot from them! I'm a new rider and practice emergency braking every time I ride. In the MSF course, we practiced from 20 MPH in 2nd gear downshifting to 1st, braking, and coming to a complete stop. But what do you do if you're in 6th gear and have to brake in an emergency? Do you shift down 5 gears as fast as possible while braking? Or is it more important to simply get the bike stopped? I understand why you want to be in 1st gear when you come to a complete stop but it seems like a lot to do all at once...brake hard and downshift five times as fast as possible. Thanks again for all the great videos!EDIT: Maybe it's in this video here...I'll go check it out! th-cam.com/video/rT3dTUoUlS0/w-d-xo.html
You're welcome! Keep in mind, if you're going more than 30mph, swerving will be your better option over braking...but the same thing applies if you're in 6th gear and decide to stop...same technique. Sure, if you can downshift to 1st before stopping, do it...but if you had to pick, stopping before you hit the car or kid is #1 priority.
Awesome, thanks very much for clarifying that...and thanks again for all the helpful videos. Keep up the great work!
You're welcome!!
I am a old rider still need to practice guess that's why I am still a old rider 🤣
Do you need to pull in the clutch while breaking too? Do you also need to downshift whilst stopping? Or should you ignore that and focus progressive front break and easing off the rear?
#1 priority is to not hit the car that pulled out in front of you...practice stopping really fast first. Then, learn to always be back in first before you stop...for quick or normal stopping.
souls of dead riders who skid their rear and died: 14 dislikes
Very likely
LOL how on earth can anybody dislike this video? Some peeps are just extremely sadly arrogantly stupid :-(
Can you explain the reason for tapering off the rear brake, instead of using the same technique as with the front brake? (Slowly increasing pressure on the rear brake)
Because the weight is going to the front...because of the this, the rear brake will start skidding very soon. I have about 3 other videos going more in depth talking about emergency braking too:)
you've just saved our lives... beginner rider here... god bless
This guy has the best videos for riders on youtube.

Hi there, I just found your video and am very thankful for your advice and expertise. Today was my test day finally, and my first task was emergency braking. However, it had rained hard all night and morning, however the rain stopped just before my test, so i though,,,yay! but then, i locked the front wheel, i think,,,,,,,i locked something and the bike went out under me and i flew off, landed on my shoulder. My neck hurt first, then my shoulder and hip, but now my shoulder is still hurting bad. I am thankful to God this happened to me today in the school rather than on the actual roads. I was a little shook up and sore, but i got back on the bike and finished the course, the course went well, but cos i dropped the bike it was an automatic fail. I reallly want to learn how to use my brakes before i pass.
All about how you use the brakes....I have en entire playlist on emergency braking
Great video. It's nearly winter and the weather is awful over here in the Netherlands. A lot of rain. Do you have some tips on pushing the limits braking in the rain?
I practice in the rain...just start slowly (15mph) and do White Belt braking...then slowly go up, Blue, Brown
Good video. Don't you think your front brake lever gets too close to the handlebar? That's what it seemed to me when you grabbed it from below.
Thanks! If it's too close, adjust it so you can get to full braking power and still have room for your fingers.
Had a wakeup call yesterday riding on hwy 1 along the coast near Point Reyes with a buddy. We were just leaving a 35 mph zone on the last turn before a straight away. I was following several bike lengths behind him and he hit the gas as he completed the turn. His bike has loud pipes, which spooked a deer standing in the bushes on the right side of the road, which promptly darted out into the roadway only 15 feet in front of me. I was probably doing about 35 mph. Luckily I was still covering both brakes as I exited the turn, but probably used too much rear brake because the rear end started fishtailing a bit. I was on a 600 lb Honda Shadow Sabre 1100. As luck would have it, the skidding sound of my rear wheel caused the deer to reverse it's tracks just before I would have made impact, so nothing happened other than me having to change my shorts! Time for more parking lot practice drills, which is why I reviewed your video again. Thanks so much for all your great videos.
skidding rear tire? yes, wayyy more practice needed :)
Just bought slalom cones on eBay they are small enough to carry in my top case, been meaning to since the video you did last summer. I will begin practice days with emergency stopping first from now on.
Awesome! That's great :)
Careful with the cones. If you happen to be on the front brakes hard and run onto one it will cause the front wheel to skid... I inadvertently did this while practicing. Stay safe.
@@mikesmith6580 Lol yes...don't brake on top of cones.
Interesting video. Doing my learners training course, the instructor told us to go at 15-20mph then GRAB the brakes and clutch to stop in time. You’re saying progressively brake.
Grabbing is wrong and the cause of so many crashes, that instructor is an idiot

"If the rear tire skids, slowly let off brake" is that because quickly letting off the brake will launch bike in a different direction? I don't know, I'm just guessing. Also, I've only recently discovered your channel. GREAT advice and it's helping to give me confidence again after not riding for 5+ years. I want to put my bike in the shop and get back to riding, but only after re-educating myself.
If your tires are out of alignment and you release the rear brake, it could cause a high side when the rear tire re-grips. Thanks :)

Yes
You talk the talk and walk the walk. The physics with riding a motorcycle is unique. Front brakes verse rear or even a balance between the two. Newtons third law comes to mind (an object motion shall remain in motion unless acted upon by an opposing force) when applying primarily front brakes do to the driving force coming from the rear system. Although I've seen you do it and have applied myself, it still blows my mind how this technique works. I was under the impression that the back brake was the primary based on physics not so much system construction and function. Interesting.

@MotoJitsu® when I start
Do you recommend starting at say 24mph then 37mph then 49mph till I can confidently do it at 62mph?
And should I be doing this with both front and rear?
Just do 20mph...15ft or less stopping distance. See if you stop that quickly 100 times in a row without making a mistake (skidding the tires, etc.) But 5 mins a day is better than 30 mins once a week.

Hello, I found your videos helpful. I am worried how to apply proper brakes when in a taking a turn? it would be great to hear from you. Thank you! Happy riding!
I have an entire playlist on emergency braking
Thanks Sir. Your videos are awesome 👍. I learn a lot. One question: you switch to first gear in some moment? So I that way you can escape if it is necessary. Thanks. From Mexico!!!
Well ABS save my butt at a 160kph. If I took my ABS I don't know what will happened. But, the ABS beat the hell my joints. Wrist , shoulder and back. Squeezing the brakes gradually till it won't do it anymore left my 2 fingers swelling the next day. The van from the overtaking lane crossed all the lanes all the way to the 4th lane where he stopped. I was 2 feet away from his rear bumper when I stopped. Lucky? No. It was the ABS that saved me.
I see lots of comments about pulling the clutch in parallel with braking to prevent stalling, but I would think engine braking with normal braking is ideal for an emergency stop, right?
No. This video is about how to stop as fast as possible and the technique to do it
I'm gonna start practicing this technique as soon as I get my new license for the increased size of bike I'm riding (in Sweden we have three different motorcycle licenses). I cannot practice this yet though because if I get used to doing it this way (allowing the rear to bounce up a little) I would most certainly fail my driver's test. In the Swedish driver's test for motorcycle, you have to be able to stop quickly, effectively, and *controlled* (emphasis on controlled) from 50, 70 and 90km/h. They do not consider letting the rear wheel lift off of the ground to be a controlled way of braking.
👍🏼😊
What do you with the clutch in that instance? Clutch in and go to gear 1?
Good videos mate, keep it up. A question ¿what to do with the clotch in a emergency braking?
Pull it in
Great vid, Eddie! I’m having a hard time with the white belt stoppage and will continue to practice!! I’ll either skid the rear or grab too much front. Your demonstration answered the question I had on “why does this keep happening”. Thanks again!
If this is the case you need instruction. Weigh the cost of a Total Control course versus the cost of a damaged bike, or worse.
Thanks! Practice, practice, practice...courses...and more practice lol
Awesome demo, thank you ✅🏍🌈

People usually lock their front brake and it cause them to fall. Specially on sandy road
One more tip we learnt on emergency braking without ABS is not to pull the clutch during the stop. It is amazing to see the effects it has on preventing the rear wheel from skidding. Your thoughts 💭
The clutch has nothing to do with anything...and you always want to be in first gear with the clutch in when you come to a stop just in case the person behind you is texting or whatever and can't stop....you're ready to always take off. Whoever said that doesn't really know what they're talking about.
Do you know about my app & books? MotoJitsu.com
Don't pull on the front brake too quick depending on the environment and bike you are on, know your surroundings and limitations.
Grabbing the brake is never a good idea nor do I ever say that.
Question(s)? Why do most "experienced riders" believe using your front brakes is a bad idea when emergency braking? Why do "they" not believe most of the power is in the front brakes? I had short discussion about this, and on their counter point, it was stated five people had used their front brakes, most likely improperly, in an emergency stop situation and those five individuals went flying over their handlebars. The opposition is convinced most of the power is in the rear brakes not the front brakes.
Because they're not experienced riders and have no clue what they're doing.
Good afternoon brother, I have a question when I was doing emergency braking I was never applying brakes on the rear wheel and only pressing the front brakes I felt it that my back wheels was locking up, and I also don't have ABS on my bike I have 2021 ZX10R non abs.. and on this video you was talking about when you apply sign them on a break it goes to the back also? I was checking my front brakes I do not see no lines of breaks going towards the back.. hopefully you understand what I'm talking about thank you
then it's skidding which means you're putting way too much pressure on it.
Thanks for watching ❤️ MotoJitsu.com for my App, Books, Merch, Discounts, etc. 👍🏼
why do you taper off the rear brake? honest question
Due to the weight moving to the front, if you don't taper off the rear, it will lock up the rear tire and skid almost instantly.
I am a new rider n your videos r very helpful. During breaking you did not mention anything about clutch and downshifting. Shoul the clutch be pulled or not?
This video is how to stop really fast...clutch and downshifting have little to do with it...always make sure you're back in 1st gear before you stop.
Always right on point man 👌 u deserve Noble for teaching how to ride god bless u
Thanks!
I like your American accent..very clear. Great info.
thanks!
Scary how quick things can go wrong when not done right.
Superb advice. Get out n practice.
Why to taper off the rear brake. Wont a little bit of continuously applying the rear brake make us stop faster than tapering off??
Because it will start to skid since the weight is all going to the front
I’ve been practicing your motojitsu drills and i always make a conscious effort to be gentle on the rear brake. Front break squeeze is good for me now, but every time the bike leans forward my foot presses the rear break harder and then the wheel skids. I think it’s due to the angle of forward lean shifting my weight into my foot. Any tips on trying to improve upon this? Thanks
It's because the technique for the rear brake during emergency braking is exactly the opposite. Front brake is increasing pressure, rear brake is start off lightly, then go lighter...taper off. More practice.
MotoJitsu awesome thank you
you're welcome
How do you know which wheel is skidding ?
And what’s that metal frame called at the side of your bike which protect your bike from drops?
You’ll feel it
Great videos! What if you're in 5th or 6th gear, what is the approach for down shifting through the gears to be ready to go in first? If in 2nd it's not a big problem but shifting through 5 gears etc more difficult especially when stopping is main objective?
just make sure you're in first before you stop...if you have time...number priority is to stop the bike. I rather stop 1 ft away from the car and still be in 6th vs trying to downshift and stop and hit the car.
@@MotoJitsu great stuff

It took me till 6:24 to work out that your front right chest badge did NOT say "Don't ride Pregnant"! On a serious note, I love your instructional videos, but in this one, it would have helped me if you'd explained the tennis balls before demonstrating the "bad" technique. Until then, I thought they were just random bits of carpark litter! LOL Thx for another great vid.
You're welcome!!

IS THAT AN ADVENTURE BIKE?? INTERESTING LOOKING
:)
You explained it very well but please let me help to understand further. So what is the first break to press, is it rear then do the front (10,20,30....100) or front (10,20,30.....100) then rear?
Both at same time…but if you have to choose it’s all about the front since it’s the overwhelming majority of the power
@@MotoJitsu So I press both simultaneously ,then as you said in the video while im pressing front break (10,20,30....100) I slowly let go the rear break right?
yup
@@MotoJitsu thank you so much! ❤️ Love from ph
Another good video mate. Is it a Polish flag on the tail bag?

I think a trike (like a CanAm) will stop faster than a 2 wheeler. But will a car stop faster than a 2 wheeler? BTW another great video!!!
Who knows, never saw the testing for all 3 at the same time
