    I share my organic homestead with my loving partner, Mr J and our two cats.
    We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
    We keep hybrid chickens and also have breeding flocks of Cream Legbar, Jersey Giant, Light Sussex and Australorp chickens and Aylesbury ducks and have an organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
    I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.

    Thank you. As an old woman without a thyroid, but with anxiety and depression, I struggle daily. Gardening is my refuge and you are my inspiration. I know this is an old video and the move to the new property is a true delight to watch. Your Mr. J is wonderful, and I have survived because of my Mr. Ralph. We are blessed.

    So many of us have what a friend calls ‘invisible disabilities’, from chronic fatigue to fibromyalgia to early MS etc. A good support system recognizes that not all illness manifests in festering boils or limps. Your openness brings awareness to this issue and we thank you.

    Hi Liz, Although you posted this video 4 years ago this video has shown up in my YT feed at just the right time. Thankyou for being brave enough to share about your challenges with chronic illness and depression. Sharing your story and being true to yourself is going to help so many. You raise awareness as well as show others that deal with these issues that they are not alone. I have faced challenges with chronic illness, as well as depression for most of my life. I have had periods where I haven't wanted to be here. Thankyou again for sharing. Blessings!

      Hi Joy, as I have this platform to reach people, I feel it's important address issues such as chronic illness. All too often it's hidden away and not spoken of and yet so many of us struggle with some type of ill-health. It's only by sharing that we are going through similar things that others can know that they are not alone. 😃

    I like watching quite a lot of gardening youtube, homesteading, self sufficient, etc. But my favourite youtubers are the ones that show the reality of it. |The downs and the ups.
    One day I would like to do it, and what a shock it would be if folks only ever showed the ups.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Oh Liz, look already how many people you have helped, and if you had nothing else you could surely count them as grateful friends, I’ve been following you and have never detected you had any kind of illness. I have no experience of your serious thyroid problems, but how you have given me some hope with very long term deep depression. I hope you realise how much you give to others by opening up and sharing. I thank you so very much.

    Wow Liz...you are my mirror image. I had my thyroid removed 25 years ago, I've had depression since I was a teenager and was hospitalised for a short time when I was 19. It was 35 years before anyone told me it's not my fault...and that was the start of me taking control. I learnt when dark days were coming so I could prepare for them. Occasionally it meant just pulling a duvet over my head and waiting...but it meant I was tackling it. I'm now 72 and for some weird reason I've decided I want to grow things. I've never done any gardening before, but I'm excited about it. I'm watching all your videos, along with Huw's and one or two others. I have built a 3x1m raised bed, which is all I have room for and I'm now in the garden for some part of every day. It makes me feel so much better...I'm just loving it. Depression is not the death sentence I used to think...I have learned to live with it, but manage it. Thank you for all the videos you make. I have loads to catch up on, but doing my best to get there. Keep being open about your depression...it helping so many of us, I'm sure.

    This just popped up in my feed, it's been three years since you made this. Thanks for your honesty. I have experienced some of the things you describe, including thyroid illness and depression. It has taken me years to acknowledge that this way of being, and living a careful, thoughtful low key life is valid. Not everyone is that bouncy energetic excited human. It's nice to have this affirmed. Thanks for all you do.

    I've only watched a few videos of yours so far but I have loved every single one of them! You are so honest and real and I love your voice it makes me feel calm. I'm looking to start gardening and I've just been looking at different people to get a general idea of what to expect. I've suffered from depression for almost my entire life and I had no idea you had it too until I stumbled across this video. You are absolutely an inspiration to me and seeing you being so honest and realistic and being able to thrive and inspire despite of your depression fills me with hope. Thank you so much for being you.

      Hi Aiyana, thank you for your kind words. As you may imagine, some days are harder than others and on those days I often make a very simple vlog or one that I have pre-made and have on stand by, but generally I muddle through. You may also want to see this video, in which Mr J talks about what it's been like for him to live with me through the period when I was being diagnosed and starting to deal with the hypothyroidism. th-cam.com/video/E1EP0KAMOKs/w-d-xo.html

      Aiyana Bowers . I might have been writing your comments, I echo all of them and it sure does help when I listened to Liz and I read your comments, I kind of feel part of a fellowship. For myself I’ve often felt I have an illness that dare not speak it’s name and feel I must hide it away and do the best I can. I will try to follow some of Lizs coping ideas. I thank you both, sincerely for sharing.

    Thank you so much for this video. I found you through the gardening videos, which is my kind of therapy. I am relieved, that someone else is having similar problems like me, and I am not alone. (I suffer also from hypersensitivity, migraine, diabetes). There are days, when i cant even get out off bed, bcs depression. And the worst is, when i am not depressed, the weather is amazing, I want to go gardening, but the migraine attacks, and I have to go to bed, in dark, silence place, with a very chilled wet towel over my head. And there are days, when i dont have the energy for anything else, but to wath the garden, the birds, the trees in wind, our dogs playing. I always thought, I am a walking disaster, lazy, sad person, doubting myself all the time. It took me a lot of time to find out, that it is not my mistake - people are born with hypersensitivity and predisposition for depression. So thank you for sharing! *** sorry for my English, I am not a native speaker, I am from Czechia.

    I agree that the more I acknowledge negative times, the more they stay around. I read The Mind and The Brain by J. Schwartz many years ago about this very subject. Written by a psychiatrist, it was full of ideas for redirecting negative or destructive mental health thoughts and actions. I also found that light, time with nature, movement outdoors, and excellent nutrition help with this, too. When I lived in Seattle, a climate very much like yours, I always turned on every light in the house. We're strong, sister. We can get through the down days.

    Thank you, I have depression, stage 4 breast cancer Mets to bones, hashimotos as well. The estrogen blockers for my cancer sent me into a deep depression with suicidal thoughts. I’m in weekly therapy now and it helps. But gardening is what truly helps me. I still struggle but it helps to know you are not alone.

    Thank you for your honesty in showing your whole self. So many of us suffer similarly and have been judged over time for somewhow being 'less than or unworthy' when the reality is that it is widespread in every walk of life. My journey into depression began after losing our baby to SIDS and several years later I had a huge breakdown and long stay in hospital with a diagnosis of bipolar, Cptsd and eating disorder. The long-term lithium wiped out my thyroid too. It is a continual struggle to keep well, I like to be without meds for depression too although it's really difficult. I'm blessed with a wonderful husband and grandchildren now. Like you, I try really hard to manage the condition. Am blessed to live in a beautiful place in the countryside too.

    Hello Liz. Thank you so much for being courageous and talking about your health problems. Most of us have them don`t we ? I suffer with a painful bone disease and the depression which accompanies it. The light box also helps me in the winter. We live in the Pacific North West ( Seattle area ) and it can be quite gloomy and wet at this time of year. This morning I forced myself to go outside and feed the chickens and goats. It made a big difference to my outlook, as it does to yours. God bless.

    This is so nice of you to share, watching it years later. It is hard to describe fully the symptoms and life with hypothyroidism. I had it undiagnosed so long it affected other hormones and there’s still some issues that need figuring out. I do understand your story and am so pleased to see you share it. I thought I wouldn’t have the energy to create a big permaculture garden like yours but you give me hope! It’s great to see you today, so much better. Loving the light box recommendation, I have thought about it so much! We’re also hot composting thanks to your advice! Such an interesting vlog! Thanks for sharing such a deeply personal part of yourself. I can certainly relate and it's helpful to hear others talk about it. As I get older I find that I am getting more depressed in the winter; finally my Dr told me to get a light box and I think I better before next winter! Thank you dear, you are a beautiful person!

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I haven't used my lightbox in the height of summer, I have found that I need to start using it by about mid August because by then the days are getting shorter and I don't get enough natural light. If I am careful and use it strictly I can just about keep on top of the worst of the depression. It may be worth you getting one before winter and start using it in autumn to keep your mood higher before winter comes. I hope that it works for you too!

      Liz Zorab that's a good idea! I wonder if the type makes a difference, I've seen them at bed bath and beyond for about $30. Thanks!

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are different types of lightbox, some give you simulated day light (with a blue bulb usually) and they aren't a light box to help with depression, you'll need to find a place that sells them specifically for S.A.D. Here in UK I get mine from www.sad.co.uk/en-UK/SAD-Lamps/sddsl10503.htm but I bet you can get the same thing there.

    Well what a coincidence. I asked about that topic for a reason. I deal with Hypothyroid AND depression. I've had ups and downs. Thank you for having the courage to talk about this. I've also been dealing with some lower back pain which is quite excruciating from PCOS and I've been absolutely down in the dumps. You are such an angel! I love your videos. Obviously I'm a bit behind with my own issues. I also get panic attacks. I think I suffer from PTSD after the experience leading up to our preterm loss in 09'.

    Hi Liz, thanks for sharing. My two sons suffer from depression and it is very hard for me to sometimes understand what it is like for them as I am naturally a very positive person. A few things you shared have helped. Thank you so much for just telling it like it is. Take care.

    I, too, deal with depression (and anxiety), especially in the winter months. I am critically low in vitamin D.
    I am curious about your light box. What kind of light is it, and where would I find one?

    Thank you for your honest video. You covered some very important points. Sunshine is wonderful for our health and the light box is great for the winter when it is more difficult to get outside. You are blessed to have Mr. Jay and friends who can gently remind you when you need to get back on your routine. Animals are healing too, so share the animals as often as you like. If I may make a suggestion I had Hashimoto's for three decades and found that when my thyroid hormone levels were low, I had depression. It was my indicator that my meds needed adjusting (not that my doctor would listen). I went on my own healing journey, and one thing that has helped me tremendously is lemon balm. I either take capsules or drink lemon balm tea. I believe it helps make serotonin (perhaps indirectly) but I can feel the difference when I take it. You are on your own healing journey and it is lovely that you are sharing it with us! Your videos make my day brighter. Your homestead inspires me to get outside and grow plants. Thank you for being a light for others! Blessings and the best of health to you and yours.

    Yes I'm well versed in the 'act as if'....but that is just one of the many temporary strategies we use to get through the day or the next hour or whatever, and it often doesn't work. Actually the best thing any of us sufferers can do, for ourselves and indeed everyone else, is to stop putting so much energy into acting as if everything is hunky dory and be honest with ourselves and with our loved ones. Mr J. notices when you are not yourself Liz and reminds you of things you need to be doing to keep yourself well, God bless him. My sisters and one of my brothers, William, support me in the same way! Love, Vera.

    Thank you for sharing your story about depression and how you have learned to handle the signs and symptoms of this disorder. I too suffer with periods of depression and have learned to know when it is starting to surface. It is important to learn what might trigger the on set of it, smells, sounds, time of the year and yes the length of sun light or as noted Seasonal Depression. If more people share by admitting first that they too suffer from depression and what they do to work through a (for lack of a better term) Flair up, people would not feel so alone or feel different from others. Instead a kind of support system would be develop and might just save lives. Once again Thank you.
