I've been very curious in recent months, and I thought it was time to give myself a crash course in all the topics I feel that school didn't adequately explain, including natural sciences and their history. This video has provided me with an astounding amount of worthwhile knowledge!.. I'm not even a quarter way through also, and I have already learned so many interesting facts about the history of electricity. To think that only 300 years ago, people knew nothing about the force that so dominates every facet of our lives.. How many Americans can say they know Benjamin Franklin didn't actually perform the experiment with the kite and the key, it's such an iconic moment! For all the challenges I've faced in the last two year that bring me fear and frustration, it's certainly been a magical experience have more time to learn deeply about any topic, for free at any time. Thank you for posting.
The best book you will read on it is The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan followed the A short history of nearly everything by Bill Bryson. Also Cosmos the TV show from 1980 is even more amazing than this show here.
Sorry to highjack your comment Rugby but the site will not allow me to comment otherwise. I want to register my horror that when dealing with the important experiments in making and laying the trans-Atlantic cable the name of the most famous scientist/inventor of the day was never mentioned. William Thomson was so admired he was the first scientist ever to receive a peerage for his work, becoming Lord Kelvin. The unit of temperature is named after him. A famous scientist on the Continent said he was humbled in the presence of Thomson. So why is he consistently removed from history? His "crime" was calculating the age of the Earth from experiments involving the rate of cooling of iron spheres. His value proved to be incorrect; of course it was, nobody had discovered radioactivity, a phenomenon which still today keeps the Earth hot!!
Wow, I love this stuff. The narrator is fantastic. I went through a hurricane and was without electricity. What a horrible time! No TV, no air-conditioning, no refrigerator, no stove, no clean clothes. At night, it was quiet, dark, scary. It was a little peaceful, but that wore off. When the electric returned, there was a cheer in my entire neighborhood that could be heard for blocks! I was cheering too! No matter how some people say technology is not good (and a lot is not) I want it. Mostly, I want electricity. It makes my life better. I say that without qualification. Electricity makes my life better.
That's what we'll get when we exchange fossil fuels for wind turbines - not working when there's no wind - and solar panels - zilch at night when covered with snow, or negligible electricity on cloudy days. Our children and grandchildren will never forgive us.

Well, at least they mentioned George Westinghouse. He was responsible for the development of AC power distribution. Tesla invented the AC induction motor and machines that made a lot of big sparks.
It’s good thing we never went with the Edison system and proved that Tesla system was the best system invented and used in modern times. We also made it even safer and still able to power more places than Edison system could ever do. I couldn’t imagine all the power stations needed for the Edison system with our modern population.
@@garynilsson416 Westinghouse was the backer as JP Morgan for the banks. Tesla was able to bring Ac/Dc together for a purpose. That’s what Tesla was called in to do. Both AC and DC served a purpose however no one knew how to bridge both together like Tesla did.
