I saw Debbie at the Business Lounge at the Frankfurt Airport a few years ago. She's pretty big in the power end these days but that's life isn't it? I still like her music and personality.

Marilyn had a womanly hourglass figure and Debbie's figure was like a pubescent girl's, although Debbie looked more like Marilyn than Madonna did. Not all blondes look alike.
But saying that you fantasized about being Marilyn's daughter is not the same as claiming that you think Marilyn might be your daughter. You can the say the first one a thousand and it still doesn't mean the second thing so people are definitely misquoting her if they say anything other than her fantasizing that MM was her mother.
But the misquoting thing about Debbie's take on MM is just a reflection of the media and the press being lazy and not doing their homework on what her original quote was.
