I met Lauren in 1992 or 1993 when she did a book signing in boca Raton, florida, at Liberty book store. There was a huge line up to get her autograph with purchase of her book, I bought the soft copy and she really wasnt supposed to sign soft copy only the more expensive hard copy, when I got to the front of the line somebody said sorry Lauren will only sign hard copy books, but being the wonderful person she was, she called me over and signed my book anyways against the rules....that was a class act, what a classy lady..I love her😘

I love Lauren Bacall also! I love her throaty voice and her looks and her personality and how she acted and her confidence! Yes, she seemed totally opposite of everything that Marilyn was! Oh, you were so lucky to have met her and bought her book, which I didn’t know she had done, and to get her autograph! That was very sweet and lovely of her to sign your paper back book! Do you live down there? I have a lot of history in Florida! Was Lauren living down there or did she just go on a book signing tour?

Marilyn was a dreamer, childlike, sweet, fearful. And terribly insecure. Striking comparison to Bacall, who was in total possession of herself and her own prowess, ballsy even. Strong. Direct. Witty. Lovely that they got along and that Bacall could see to the heart of Monroe; that she was able to recognize that there was no malice in her, and she did nothing out of spite or meanness. Still so sad to me that Monroe never truly seemed to find long lasting, protective and unconditional love from anyone, in her entire life. She had everything, and she had nothing...

Her husbands, of course they loved her. Many collegues loved her. She had some deep trauma in her due to her childhood. Traumas like that makes it hard for people to adapt in relationships with other. So she had problems in trusting other people and believe in their love. She actually walked out on her husbands herself. On her wedding trip to Japan she left her husband to go to Korea. I suppose she wanted to flew something in herself when she did that... Very sad.

Marilyn's demeanor isn't terribly uncommon among people with extremely troubled upbringings, like she had. She was abused her entire young life and had little stability or security. I don't think she ever truly healed from her past, learned to love herself, or fully develop her identity outside of the image that was created for her.

Lauren was consistent about Marilyn over decades, so you know it's true. Marilyn seems to have been well liked and understood by her female co-stars. You'd think maybe they'd resent potentially being outshone by her but I can't think of any that turned on her later. That says a lot about them and a lot about her. Lauren is incredible in Millionaire, the epitome of the American sophisticate. What a face. What a look. What a voice. What class. What screen presence. Hard to think of anyone today of her stature.

But in reality, according to people who knew her or had to work with her, she was an extremely shy person. Very insecure and never felt good enough, which was why she was constantly striving to improve herself even more. Some of her fellow actors said that she would be so anxious that she would vomit before doing a movie.

She was ethereal, luminous, but it wasn't just the platinum hair and soft focus dewy makeup, but she shone from within, she was a presence, a screen goddess. All the big actresses of 30s-50s knew great tricks (some pretty crazy like removing teeth and pulling skin with tape, but we also do crazy shit now), but none of them ever looked so angelic anx out of this world, I actually think that film registered that even better than photos. Norma Jean was a lot more gusty and smart than people give her credit for. She founded her own production company and created her persona. I believe she could have done much more and grown as an actress given the right supportive environment. The tragic child is a part of her story but not all of it!

As beautiful, charismatic, iconic and undoubtedly talented Marilyn was, every co star over time recalled the same impressions and shared the same frustrations. Even if Marilyns personal challenges came from a good place it must have been a nightmare sometimes to work with her. So much effort would have been made to get her on set the other actors must have been affected. Acting requires such an emotional and physical effort, just imagine arriving on set on time, having read the script and prepared oneself to deliver the required performance and everything is put on hold for hours sometimes days. In an effort to obtain Marilyns performance the other actors must have become jaded and their stella performances lost.

In photoshoots, MM was in control and enjoyed them. On movie sets, she had much less control so apparently her anxiety was sky-high. Two of her coping mechanisms were to stall production by remaining for long periods in her dressing room and the other was having her drama coach always within arms reach. MM seems like she rehearsed every scene incredibly meticulously.

I think J KK has hit the nail on the head...Lawrence Olivier said exactly the same thing....she was a model who was kinda forced to act, and she was more insecure about her acting, as she knew she looked good and was comfortable with posing....She often said she was shy having to speak in public, so I think she created some kind of persona, rather than her real self on screen. A lot of shy people do that in order to be able to present themselves in public. Of course she was insecure, she had nobody really...no fabric of family....her mother sent away to a psychiatric facility, fostered out as a youngster, she was never sure of her father, although she did find cousins & aunts and some extended family who I know she spent time with during her life. It would have been nice for her to have had a husband and children to give her that family atmosphere I think she craved.....I always get that she was a bit lonely but got used to it as she didn't really know anything else. I don't think she was totally naive, I think she got to know the way of the business and learned as she went on through experience. She was desperate to hone her craft as an actress, and one of the bravest things she did I think was to go to the Actor's Studio when she was already an accomplished Hollywood movie star, and sit with these extremely good actors without the frills or the pomp and ceremony she carried with her. I don't think she was hugely promiscuous going off today's standards...she was married only twice, had a miscarriage, and had a fling with a President, we don't really know of any other dalliances, we are just guessing. The pills she took tainted her behaviour later on, but I never heard her say a bad word about anyone!....

    • @cellis3045
      @cellis3045 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@blanche kiernan Err Lawrence Olivier may have had limitations as a man, a human being in real life...but as an actor, he was BRILLIANT, and to say Marilyn was on the same acting par as him is ridiculous....She worked hard to be a good actress, she tried, but she was exactly what he said she was....a model who was forced to act. Marilyn was first and foremost a model. She was comfortable in that area, knew who to work the camera and was very photogenic. She had sexual charisma, was an extraordinary pretty, and attractive looking woman, and gifted with star quality...but a 'great actress'?...Sorry, she wasn't. She was like John Wayne, a personality with charisma, a strong presence, and star quality on screen...but great actors they were not...they just basically played themselves!..

The media was hoping for fireworks between Grable and Monroe while making the movie, however, Grable basically told Monroe; Look honey, I've had a great run in films and now it's your turn to shine, now go and enjoy it. The 🎥 loved Marilyn. Even without makeup or costume, she could still wow any camera within feet of her. Such was her beauty.
Marilyn Monroe was quite literally a creation. Like John Wayne or Roy Rogers and so many others during the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. Even now, today, Hollywood still creates. She defined femininity. Her look was copied by many, but never replicated. Some came close. Like Jane Mansfield, but no women ever surpassed Marilyn in terms of true beauty both on and off set. Even by today's standards ( which in my opinion, are much lower ) Marilyn clearly looks far more beautiful verses any actress today.
What I find so very compelling and I truly believe this to be a truth about Marilyn, is, how can one be so beautiful, so very popular and yet......be so very alone!
She was, without a doubt, intelligent. Yet, her desire to be respected, was often hampered by her inability to simply believe in herself. Many of her contemporaries have indeed stated this. Of course in their own way.
Marilyn was and is, in my opinion, the single greatest example of a star who rises fast, but falls just as hard. What ever happened that day in her home may never really ever be known. I just wish she had had friends close by to watch over her. People she could trust........

How could she "love" a man who beat her out of jealousy and tried to keep her at home to himself?

He didn't deserve her to begin with.

Rene Lynch Arthur was known to manipulate her and make her feel stupid. Emotional abuse is still abuse. She fell for men who had power and probably thought she deserved a love that wasn’t kind to her as most people with anxiety and insecurities do

Joe was possessive, sexist and jealous...he wanted her to dress more conservatively and tried to change her completely...that is not love.

@Gina Jennings People will often stay with or return to abusive partners because they think it's what they deserve. It doesn't mean they are happy. Often when they leave an abusive relationship they will find another one - same situation with a different person.
