This is so true! I barely turned my automatic updates off in time before it it knocked out my I/O interfaces. Incompatibility is the beast many don't see coming.
It has been this way for decades and it will continue to be. For some reason that I have never been able to fathom, vendors in the music and video industries do not take advantage of Apple providing beta software for almost a year before release. Only after it is released do they seem to start taking it seriously. Don’t blame Apple for this. The vendors knew the software was coming.
Video and audio pro's know not to upgrade to the next OS X just because it's available or upgrade at all if their current system functions well and certainly never upgrade in the middle of a job. In fact it's best to upgrade a second system first and work out all the kinks, making sure the software and peripherals you use is supported by the newer OS X. It's true vendors are traditionally late with those upgrades. Apple hasn't helped much making the auto-upgrade thing harder to deal with and shut off like it used to. I thought they understood that pro's have different needs from the run of the mill user? Guess not.
So I take it that Monterey is safe to run now? I have an old cheese-grater Mac Pro, still a beast and running just fine on Catalina - except that it doesn't like my new Launchkey 88. Apparently this keyboard is designed to integrate seamlessly with Logic Pro 10.7 which Catalina doesn't run, so I'm tempted to make the jump to Monterey just to get the Launckkey 88 to stop acting wonky. Should I do this, or maybe only go to Big Sur - or just leave it be?...
When ever there is a new update, I look for honest reviews such as these. I am still on Mojavi, because I find that many updates fit the retail end of things, but not the consumers' end. Apple keeps releasing updates, but they are only small additional features that do not serve a a fluid workflow.

I'm looking to get back into music production and I used to have an imac, but his is why I'm really considering getting a windows pc and learning ableton instead of buying a new mac. I love logic, but it's just not worth the hassle with these yearly os updates. I want my stuff to work properly.

Thanks for the advice in this video John. I personally have kept on Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 even in the mid year point of 2023. As a professional music producer my main concern for work is that my system works without any flaws, as professionals we get used to a certain workflow and often times when updates like this come out they interrupt this workflow and you have to end up waiting for the software/plugin companies to catch up, mean while that project you almost completed now doesn't load up entirely as some of the plugins don't work and now you have to wait. In your honest opinion either John or reader what would you say is the most all round stable Mac OS to update to if you are like myself on version 10.14.6 Mojave?
You never get glitches? Stuff just stops working right after a while , especially websites , viruses and malware start getting better at messing with OS too
@riversideproductionztv I'm in exactly the same boat, running Mojave on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports). I've checked around and Ventura seems to be the most recommended now as most plugins work, and it uses the least RAM. I'm gonna give it a shot.
I just updated from Monterey to Ventura, when I use after effect 2023 with Ventura Os System, after editing for 5 minute with after effect, my macbook pro 2019 shutdown! it happened 3 times during 1 hour. I hope not related with Ventura. or maybe I need to downgrade to Monterey again. :(
Didn’t update last time until I’d checked each piece of software I use regularly on the actual website of the company that makes it. Meant waiting about a month before finally updating but it was worth it. And I NEVER NEVER NEVER have automatic updates switched on . I've upgraded and have no problems with the plugins (audio, video, graphics). The main compatibility problem is not the operating system, but the switch from an Intel to a Silicon processor.
I remember a few years ago I updated my Mac from 32-bit to 64-bit. Boom! Half of my old software stopped working. I've paid a bunch of money over the years. They were nuked. What's worse is that a lot of software now ask for yearly or monthly subscriptions. I regret that step ever. I should have bought a new Mac and keep my old Mac instead.
I have no real desire to update my system. I feel as though I’m being forced to😂I’m running on Mac OS Catalina (10.15) and I’m starting to run into issues where I cannot download certain video editing software and plugins. I spent 700$ on Kontakt Komplete Ultimate and I can’t use it anymore. Nearly every library says “this version of Kontakt is too old”. I tried logging into Native Access and now it won’t even open because it says my Mac is out of date and needs to be running on Mac OS 11 or higher. I’ve already contacted Native Instruments and they too said I need to update my Mac. What choice do I have ? Should I just update to Big Sur ? Monterey ?
i just updated to ventura and RC-20 stopped working. I get a blank white screen, with the basic vinyl 1 filter on and working, but unable to actually use the VST. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks for the insight man I wish I saw this two days ago
100% right. I am not a fun of regular update but the constant reminder from my mac made me update my OS from Monterey to Ventura and as it stands now Premier Pro is no more working on my mac.
I did the mistake of upgrading to Ventura and I am now to the point where if I cannot downgrade successfully I will switch from my M1 to an HP Z mobile workstation and potentially learn new programs. I've been using my M1 for 3 years now. Prior to that, I had been using macs since the first iBook. I never had remotely close to the amount of issues I had on any computer since switching to Ventura. To put things into perspective, I have used multiple cleaners, command lines, reset the SMC, cleared all the caches you can imagine, so on and so forth again and again. My screen flickers black - an issue reported on tons of different screens by people on Superuser forum -, my sound entirely cut off at random even if the right assignation of in and outs, my keyboard doesn't connect properly sometimes, I had apps that refused to go fullscreen, stage manager was forced in the background (meaning I couldn't align two windows side by side unless dragging one to the screen again; WHY???!!!), and the list goes on to the point where I am even considering to switch computer entirely. Bottom line is, yes most people will NOT report those issues with the M1, but that's just because they don't use it as a desktop replacement!!! I could NEVER advise anyone right now to use any M machine other than the minis for desktop replacement. Hopefully, downgrading will fix most of the issues, but overheating dongle (and I buy top notch stuff thank you) and other electrical problems WILL arise and potentially causes or reinforce those issues so do NOT make the same mistake I did and use the M1 as a desktop replacement for a 3 years period. Fingers crossed that downgrading will work for me!
Well, I am among those using an M1 Pro 16" as desktop replacement since July of last year. Fortunately I have not seen the same issue(s) you mentioned. However, I have seen the beachball nonsense while doing relatively light tasks e.g. browsing with a few windows opened, playing an instructional video while using an amp simulator with my guitar plugged into MOTU M2, running LogicPro (not even recording). My battery dropped to 91% within the year, although "rarely used on battery" with "optimized charging" - I suspect that is the culprit. I have had to do a hard shut down twice, as the beachball spun and the machine froze. All this may seem like no big deal, but a 32gb ram $5000 machine ought not to have ANY such issue. Taken in to an Apple store twice, revealed only that there are no Geniuses working there - most of them smug college students who speak very confidently on matters they know nothing about. By the way, all this happened with latest updates to Monterey. I cannot go back to Windows (I was there for about 15 years), after having made the leap to Apple 10 years ago.
I am currently on a 2021 intel macbook pro 16”. Mainly do music production. Should i upgrade to Ventura from Catalina? I use komplete, arturia pigments, analog lab etc. Please advice. Thanks
I see Logic drop an update 10.7.5. How do you go about updating on older version that doesn’t support it? I have Catalina and Logic is 10.6.3 . I tried updating but didn’t get an option.
I can’t get ilok to work properly, I have to install ilok everytime I boot my computer to run pro tools. Also pro tools isn’t working properly either. Don’t update to Ventura! Can I go back??
John... Many months ago you had same reaction to BigSur and I wrote to you reporting that my full system was working without any issue. It was the age of new M1 and Rosetta. After such a long time, are you now using Monterey? I am still in BigSur trying to understand when to move. I want to consider your experience. Many thanks from Italy!

Idk what to do. Where I can find cracked Fl version for Ventura? I was working on Monterey and rn on Ventura fl aint even opens
I updated my laptop to the Ventura version last week. Every time I try to download the library, I get a message saying "Logic Pro could not complete the download. Check your internet connection and try download again.” I can't fix it.
I can’t access my photo library thru photoshop. And then I went an updated it.. I’m so new to Mac I have no idea what I’m doing. Lol I was fluent in photoshop like ten years ago.. but I’m lost now
Agreed. Esp. for sound engineers and video/content developers. Web developers as well as the new OS makes the current software being used incompatible.
Hi John, I have a 2017 iMac and still running Monterey. They will no longer support my 2017 iMac with Sonoma which will launch in 4 days. I was thinking about updating to Ventura but then thinking twice about it. Do you think there's any significant reason for me to update to Ventura, the last OS my 2017 will accept for a major OS update? Any feedback is appreciated:)
So tired of Apple ignoring musicians and the decades compatibility issues with Mac OSX and audio and music apps. Musicians pro and amatuer are a big market buying Apple computers and Apple ignores us. Looking at Apple you'd think only video creators use Apple computers. Apple makes tons of money can easily afford to have few engineers to work with the big audio and music app companies to work out incompatibilities or at least give those companies a engineer level support number that can call with questions, This is how Microsoft and other companies work with the big companies making software for their OS. I only updated to Monterey a month ago and only did that because I was planning to buy a M1 Mac and wanted make sure the music software I use will be stable on Monterey. Now have Monterey on both my Intel and M1 Macs who knows if or when I might move to Ventura or the OSX that come after that.
Yep. Totally agree. The new features are confusing and don't add any value. But half my apps have major issues. Crappy new features at the cost of days of downtime.
Great video I ran across this issue about a year ago due to having automatic updates on and with the whole 30 to 64 bit thing nothing was working. So now I’m a little bit more precautions. So the safest OS up to now would be the latest previous OS if I’m correct? Because I’m like an hour away from my time machine back up and I was going to update after that.
Thanks i almost updated then found your vid wish i could go back to the old snow leopard Steve Jobs days updated to the M1 pro and $2700 later it still isnt where it needs to be for producers
peace j, hope all is well. i'm on big sur right now. as a music producer, do you think it's safe to upgrade to monterrey in april of 2023, or is it best to just stay put for a while longer?
damn J, I wish I would've watched your video yesterday cuz today all of my AdobeCC apps are freezing on me and causing all kinds of trouble with the Finder... Now I need to reverse to Monterrey. Any advise? Thx for the vid man. Good work
Anyone ever download an “older” OS that is still newer than your current OS? I think it can be found online but idk if that’s sketchy . My old OS has an issue and might have a virus . I can’t even turn off my device or even update when I tried, can’t download antivirus either . I always held off bc idk what native instruments is totally updated to, any help? With native singer menta compatibility? I was on their site but it’s kinda nauseating to look at all the OS etc. Either way I can’t even figure out how to clean my device right now . They don’t even sell antivirus on usb or cd like they used to, they ask you to go online and problem shoot ONLINE as if that isn’t the worst idea when having a virus or malware
Logic Pro X has updated but you can't take advantage of their updates without upgrading your MacOS. I wish they would release MacOS upgrades with customizations, so musicians, artists and producers etc etc. Can choose the perfect packages rather than everything including useless gimmicky lifestyle upgrades which no one uses a notebook for.
I use Spitfire Audio plugins -BBCSO- and after checking the plugin was compatible with M1, I decided to switch from an i5 because I needed more cpu power for my end-of-year school project. Big mistake ! I couldn't figure myself that BBCSO still wouldn't be compatible with Ventura 8 months after it was released. Just a few lines I found on the problem after my purchase eventually proved me that this was the case indeed. And of course the vendor had installed Ventura before selling, so... If you are in a hurry, maybe don't upgrade : it could be more problematic ! I'm now using Noteperformer, which is great 'cause it saved my life, and still looking forward to use my BBCSO...
Previous macOS have worked for me but this time Venture could not see my Mackie Onyx 1620i FireWire interface for Logic Pro 10 in my Home Recording Studio. Lucky for me Apple were a great help for me to roll back to Monterey & recover all my files with Time Machine.
I’m on a 2020 MacBook Air and my Ms rate sucks and whenever I try to lower it, it just makes my fl studio crash a ton. So I’m hoping this update just helps my MacBook a bit lmao
@@eylul9124 well I’m not crashing like crazy anymore but I think it’s more so because I’m changing my ms when I’m recording and when I’m mixing. When I record I put my Ms down to 12 but when I’m doing anything else I put it up to 20 or 22
Unfortunately I already did....: Nothing but problems with Cubase 11. Ex: Double clicking on a part does no longer open the piano roll. (anybody?) With certain screen sizes, the cursor stumbles and i'm unable to edit (copy by dragging)
also agree with you but for this time actually Ventura it's almost success to compatibility with All plug in Except Antelope Zen go control panel it's not working LoL I need to Down Grade to Monterey again^^
I updated to Ventura some time after I found out Pro Tools was compatible. No problem. But then iZotope RX 10 became very sluggish. Stupid me, I just assumed it would have been compatible long before Pro Tools. So now I'm just living with it until iZotope catches up. Anybody know when that might be?

What's worse is that a lot of software now ask for yearly or monthly subscriptions. I regret that step ever. I should have bought a new Mac and keep my old Mac instead.
What happened to your fps? looks like stop motion
What about actual performance?
Go back to monterey
So i have 2017 imac 32gb 1tb i7 catalina should i upgrade to ventura?? Or just stay any recommendation??
Thanks
Thanks man! Have a good day!
Are you still on Monterey?
So what do we do if we already updated before seeing this video
Stupidly enough - watching this video because my system updated to Ventura and now all my projects wont open! is there solutions for up to date?
I see Logic drop an update 10.7.5. How do you go about updating on older version that doesn’t support it? I have Catalina and Logic is 10.6.3 . I tried updating but didn’t get an option.
haven't been able to use Logic Pro since Ventura due to error crash by scanning Audio Units plug in. Im suffering
I have a early 2021 M1 Macbook Air with Big Sur, is it worth updating to Monterey or Ventura now? I keep getting prompts from the computer.
I’m on Monterey with no issues
I can’t get ilok to work properly, I have to install ilok everytime I boot my computer to run pro tools. Also pro tools isn’t working properly either. Don’t update to Ventura! Can I go back??
John... Many months ago you had same reaction to BigSur and I wrote to you reporting that my full system was working without any issue. It was the age of new M1 and Rosetta. After such a long time, are you now using Monterey?
I am still in BigSur trying to understand when to move. I want to consider your experience. Many thanks from Italy!
I am on Monterey on my MacBook…but Big Sur on my main machine…
@@Johnmike So no problems with Monterey and audio production? Thanks again...
@@furiobisotti8150 not with the basic things that I’ve been working on
thanks for dropping the gold nuggets!
Man, I was a moment late for watching your video when i had just updated my macos to ventura, now my logic is not working 😢and i need to deliver projects to clients. What is the solution please help. I need logic to open very badly, should i reinstall it?
Definitely install the latest version from the App Store
I did this & still can’t open my projects
Hi. Im from Russia so I could have a grammar problems so. Im sorry. I have Mac Ventura rn and my fl just aint working after updating to Ventura. I have Fl 20 and Im scared to lose my beats.
Lol I was fluent in photoshop like ten years ago.. but I’m lost now
They should start working a separate type of update just for us, creators, producers and engineers.
Lol no
That is android for you
All we need is for developers to hurry up and update they had 6 months. 😂
Agreed. Esp. for sound engineers and video/content developers. Web developers as well as the new OS makes the current software being used incompatible.
@@ericg6421 lol
One os for every career then 🤣
Hi John, I have a 2017 iMac and still running Monterey.
Accidentally updated to Ventura, now my Arturia doesn’t work :(
Thanks - but does it work or not?
Yep. Totally agree. The new features are confusing and don't add any value. But half my apps have major issues. Crappy new features at the cost of days of downtime.
Yo! I am completely down because I updated to Ventura, I cannot record any music. 😤 Have you found any solutions?
Any idea what I can do to hide the Ventura update on my Monterey OS?
i just did the migration to a new laptop from monterey and the migration somehow upgraded to ventura.. damn
Yup
Does fl studio 20 run big sur?
That's right. My Premiere 2020 crashed after installing Ventura. I wish I've watched this video before :(
Thanks i almost updated then found your vid wish i could go back to the old snow leopard Steve Jobs days updated to the M1 pro and $2700 later it still isnt where it needs to be for producers
What can I do if I already updated?
peace j, hope all is well. i'm on big sur right now. as a music producer, do you think it's safe to upgrade to monterrey in april of 2023, or is it best to just stay put for a while longer?
Monterey is solid…been on it for a few months now
@@Johnmike sweet! Thanks bro
How can I un-update???
would I be able to access my reason 9.5 beats if I update software to macOS Venrtura if I buy reason 12?
Does anyone know what I can do because I upgraded to Ventura and now Logic won’t work!
How do i go back?
It’s sketchyyy I just did it
@@kennithecreator how do u do it since this shits getting on my nervs now

I regret updating. Usually I air drop edited vids over to my iphone for uploads, and now I can't seem to get air drop to work.
Yea my airdrop has been acting funky as well
damn J, I wish I would've watched your video yesterday cuz today all of my AdobeCC apps are freezing on me and causing all kinds of trouble with the Finder...
I cannot see Ventura in the store. How could you update?
Not out yet…will be soon…trying to forewarn folks
Venturas estimated release date is October 24, 2022.
Previous macOS have worked for me but this time Venture could not see my Mackie Onyx 1620i FireWire interface for Logic Pro 10 in my Home Recording Studio. Lucky for me Apple were a great help for me to roll back to Monterey & recover all my files with Time Machine.
my onyx 1640i also is invisible. :( So I have to go back to Monterey?
I’m on a 2020 MacBook Air and my Ms rate sucks and whenever I try to lower it, it just makes my fl studio crash a ton. So I’m hoping this update just helps my MacBook a bit lmao
did it help
@@eylul9124 well I’m not crashing like crazy anymore but I think it’s more so because I’m changing my ms when I’m recording and when I’m mixing. When I record I put my Ms down to 12 but when I’m doing anything else I put it up to 20 or 22
Unfortunately I already did....: Nothing but problems with Cubase 11. Ex: Double clicking on a part does no longer open the piano roll. (anybody?) With certain screen sizes, the cursor stumbles and i'm unable to edit (copy by dragging)
Yo John …I’ve been running Catalina for pro tools…for the longest… Do you think it’s safe to update to Ventura yet?
Ventura is pretty solid…I’m running it on my MacBook Pro and everything is working solid
Right on…thanks…keep the content coming 🙌🏽💯
also agree with you but for this time actually Ventura it's almost success to compatibility with All plug in Except Antelope Zen go control panel it's not working LoL I need to Down Grade to Monterey again^^
