My number one alltime favourite band. An odd song, and album to begin with, but certainly a popular one. Big rabbit hole here with DM. I hope you explore more.
It's Martin Gore, the guitarist/synth player (the band's main songwriter since their 2nd album in '82) taking lead vocals on this track; as opposed to the regular lead singer Dave Gahan who you're more used to hearing. I think Dave is doing the low harmony with Martin taking the falsetto/high part alongside the main line. A lot of the more intricate stuff with the musical arrangements from this era would be down to Alan Wilder, who was with the band from '82-'95 and is also classically trained. He'd play both synth/piano and drums depending on what the song called for including in live performances. The other unusual thing with the synths production, is in the studio they would play them through a PA and then record the speakers to get the feeling of air moving like a guitar amp rather than directly into the desk.
They still put out amazing music and sell out stadiums almost 45 years since their debut 🤯 If you ever get the chance, I’d recommend the album version of “In your room”, one of my many many favorites.
While World In My Eyes got my juices going the most from Violator, this track was secretly my favourite. Disclosure: Martin is an Angel walking among us...
You need to listen to the whole of Violator in one sitting, it's only 45 minutes long. Then listen to Walking in my Shoes, Stripped, Never let me Down Again, In Your Room, Wrong... I wouldn't have thought to link DM and Taylor Swift but know The National are fans and have links to her so it all makes sense!
DM started as a pure synth band and in the mid 90's they changed there sound a bit to sound a little rockier. " I Feel You" is a fantastic song to try out
Music for the Masses and Violator had lots of guitar in them. As far as changing sound... you can't really take any three albums and say they're the same. Alan Wilder era was much different than the Vince Clark and the kept evolving thereafter
The whole Violator album is a eargasme. The order of every song and the interludes on the album match perfectly together. It’s a wave of sounds and voices that takes you to a next level sound journey. Perfect album! Hard core fans enjoy the non-commercial songs more than the popular ones. Enjoy 😉. (Also SOFAD, Music for the masses and Black Celebration are so far ahead in time).
Best Band imo. Some recommendations: Never Let Me Down Again (1987), World In My Eyes (1990), I Feel You (1993), Stripped (1986), Strangelove (1987), Black Celebration (1986) ...
Reminds me of my first true love (not my first love) and even though she now regrets leaving me, when i hear this track, it makes me realise that there can only ever be one sweetest perfection in your life.
So, this is actually one of my favourites songs on this album, and it is one of my favourite albums. There is just something magical about this song and Martin's performance.
Translate this amigo. If you ever end up in America with your accent and lost without money... You and me can pop on some Depeche Mode and find our way out of that situation to then get enough money to enjoy a night of beer listening to Depeche Mode sing People are People
I'm an '80s girl who loves Depeche Mode AND Taylor Swift!!! Never apologize for your perspectives!!! For me, I love being able to think about things in a new way....and now I understand why they're both on my playlists, and at times, on the SAME playlists!!!
I love her songs but not a big Swifty but she writes great stuff I do Love Martin Gore and Dave aka the best band If you're in this crowd you know you have a family everywhere because they touched everything in this world
Yeah this is DM, still surprise you to flesh and bones! Martin Gore is one of the best composer and lyricist ever on modern music era. And Alan Wilder was perfect hard worker in studio on production of DM sounds on this masterpiece of Violator. Just DM still working and Alan is who know where. And for me is Memento Mori album from 2023 on same level as Violator. So DM have still very high progressive power in alternative music world.
Have good memories of listening to Depeche Mode in the late 80s in night clubs etc, can’t remember hearing this one though 👍👍 , (shall now be referred to as being from their post 80s wallpaper collection)
Awwwww yes, my favourite band of all time. Going to enjoy these. Violator is my only 10 out of 10 album. Seen them live 4 times, missed the last tour due to spectacularly badly timed poorly child and I'm still devasted. Alan Wilder stepping away was a huge loss to this band 😢
As someone who grew up with DM and '80s synth music in general, I recently spent some time checking out Taylor Swift to see what the fuss is all about. I think you're right that she (and a great deal of modern pop) is drawing from the 80's style. But where I found Swift's music lacking was that the music never really contributed. It was there to back the vocals -- and since Swift is a singer (albeit not really a great one) and the sole artist, most of her music (or at least what I've heard so far) is her singing. There are almost no instrumental breaks, and there's barely even a breath taken. Many of Swifts songs have enough interesting backing instrumentals that I find myself thinking "SHUT UP". She just can't stop singing. I suspect strongly this is a producer's choice -- she's the star, who cares about the music?
It might be a case of single songwriter versus entire band. It’s much easier to write an instrumental section when you can collaborate on it with others.
@@markabusireactions Totally agree on that. It isn't that Swift's music is bad, I just find it uninteresting -- but she's the product that needs to be played up. With a band you've got other members who are part of the "product", so they get to contribute. Best line in Bohemian Rhapsody is when Freddie Mercury talks about going solo and says something like "the musicians I hired did everything I told them to..." No pushback or collaboration means less interesting music.
@@rick-says-hello-world I’m currently working on trying to make an album, and the thing I’m finding most difficult is putting myself in the shoes of other band members. Like, I can pop a simple 4/4 beat down and put the guitar and melody to it, but I’m really trying to think about how the drummer might wanna switch things up to make it interesting, and how the bass would then interact with that etc. just to try and make it so it isn’t so blatantly one guy in his bedroom kinda thing. And I’ll be honest, it’s fucking difficult, I can 100% see why her music is the way it is.
@maximilianolopez6644 This is feeling like of those Mandela effects as it was very well known. I'm sure it's in one of my books, maybe, but I ain't got time to trawl through at the moment. The vocals are very convincing with this belief if you listen with this in mind.
You’ve missed out all these years on the magic of Depeche. You have SO much yet to discover..enjoy! Depeche may have begun as a synth band, but have grown and evolved. Fans like me are not as passionate as we are for no reason.
The Taylor Swift references are what is bizarre about this reaction (thank you for reacting to DM, though). The music of Depeche Mode is so incalculably far beyond acts like Taylor Swift on every level, the frequent comparisons between the two are very strange. It's a bit like listening to Beethoven's 9th for the first time and pausing every few moments to extrapolate on how Vanilla Ice took what Beethoven was doing a bit further.
Sonically, the music of today takes a lot of inspiration from the acts of the 80s. I wasn’t talking about technical ability, I was talking about production and sound. Name me a bigger artist at the moment that I could use as a comparison and I’ll remake the video mate.
Yes! In that her new album is very much inspired by bands like this, yes. How they sound is completely different to how good songwriters they are. Also, I’m specifically referring to her latest album which is very 80s synth.
When you have reacted to what you want to do on the channel, listen to the album, start to finish. One of the best ever.
Great album, you should listen to it!
Another great song is "In Your Room (album version)"
Yeah that shit is heavy and dark
You earned a subscription because nobody touches the other songs on those albums
Right?! I'm happy to see any DM reactions but it's always the same songs!
@@Sab_MJsMama Yeah like maybe Sister of Night or some damn Things You Said because they know my weakness....lol
💯
How about Dave or Martin solo songs they both have their own songs like 21 days Dave or Martin tiny girls and manner of speaking
Dave and Martin have the best voices in the industry.
Halo. Same album and also not commercially as well known as many of their records. It's amazing.
Halo is the best
Also Blue Dress and World in My Eyes , Violator is truly one of the greatest albums ever recorded , every song is outstanding.

As a fan I really must say "Ultra" was the last great album. After that, all was very unliked by me.
"A Question Of Lust" and "One Caress" are also great DM songs with Martin Gore as lead vocal ...
everytime you hear this song you find another sound.........its just amazing
