If the new mortar is just applied as a thin layer onto old pointing, it'll crack and spall off in no time atall. You need to rake out the old mortar to form a key, assuming it is reasonably sound. If it's loose or badly cracked, then you'll need to completely remove it, possibly inc
It’s all about explaining to home owners the process. Not everyone wants to rip people off with a full rebed and point mate. If you can’t physically remove the ridge from the old mortar it’s fine to clean and over point and mind you more cost effective and appealing to the home owner
@TheCrazyturnip "what do you mean rake out the motor?" I have similar situation on my roof here that require re-pointing. What i'm about to do it, rahter then using a wire brush I'm going to apply some anti-fungi detergent all around the crack area then high pressure clean using 3000 psi spray gun then do then apply the flexi-pointing . how's that sounf? hope it work.
If you can’t lift the ridge capping from the old bedding it will be ok to clean and repoint over the top. The old bedding is only cement with a oxide mixed through. If you can get away with just an “over point” it’s easier and more cost effective for the home owner
So many people talking shit about a blokes work. Perhaps the reason he didn't strip and re bed all the hips is because the customer didn't want to pay for it. I'm a roof tiler, and if there customer doesn't want to spend the money well, they get a shit job
Thort you said it was terrachotta repaint then, was like. U got to be joking me, do t paint terrachottas -.- unless they don't know who you are, then go ahead hahahaha

Cowboy! Take the ridges off and re-bed them using good 3&1 mortar.

So 11 years later. How’d it work out for you with the new re-point after detergent ?
Did u repoint on top of the old existing bedding?
